High School Students Break The Ice Recently, Miller Place High School students on the SIT (School Improvement Team) Committee held a breakfast for newly enrolled Miller Place High School students, grades 9-12, to help them meet more of their classmates and become more comfortable with the new school environment. Approximately 30 new students have enrolled at the high school this year

so far. The students on the SIT Committee had the opportunity to give a presentation to the new students and share their own personal experiences at Miller Place High School. Student-assistant counselors and support staff also developed fun ice breaker activities at the conclusion of the breakfast to break any tension and make the students feel at ease.

Students were offered an overview of the high school’s staff members, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, and were provided with tips on how to build supportive relationships with their fellow peers. This initiative successfully aided new students at each grade level to have a more seamless transition into the Miller Place school community.

Setauket Elementary School sixth grader Lily Tamburo recently dazzled a national television audience as she performed in NBC’s musical production “Annie Live!” Taking a hiatus from her role in the Broadway musical “Mrs. Doubtfire,” Lily performed as part of the ensemble that brought the beloved story to life. Lily has been performing professionally since the age of 5, appearing as Cindy Lou Who in the national tour of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and many local community theater productions. She also voices the part of Dragon Dee & Bumblebee and Lime in the “Super Wings” Animation series. Lily was thrilled to appear in “Annie Live” and was described as having the time of her life working with the cast and Emmy winning choreographer.

Port Jefferson Middle School Fall Sports’ Successful Season

The Port Jefferson Middle School athletic teams had an outstanding fall season, filled with fun, victories and teambuilding. Coached by Mr. Bryan Vaccaro, the boys soccer team finished the season with a 5-5 record, with wins over Westhampton Beach, Rocky Point, Mt. Sinai and both Riverhead teams. The girls soccer team, combined with Miller Place, was coached by Rochelle Provenzano. The girls made new friendships and created their own uniforms as well

as a new name, the Royal Panthers. The field hockey team, coached by Mallory Guerin, finished the season with a record of 4-1-5, only giving up one or fewer goals in nine of their 10 games. The football squad led by coaches Jesse Rosen and Joe Dessi went undefeated, playing the majority of the season with only one substitute. The cheerleaders, coached by Sharon Philbrick, demonstrated school spirit by decorating the school throughout the season. The cross-country team finished

with great individual teams at every meet. The varsity team will get a lot of very talented runners next year. “Seeing the success of our middle school teams makes the future for Port Jefferson athletics look bright,” Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing Adam Sherrard said. “Our student-athletes and coaches put forth a tremendous amount of effort this season. I couldn’t be more proud of their performance.”

4 sticks cinnamon 1/4 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey 1 cup sherry (optional) 1. Combine the cider, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, and honey in a large pot over medium heat. If you are picky about things floating in your cider, make a little bundle out of cheesecloth and place the cinnamon and cloves inside before adding to the cider. I like to chew on cloves, so I just toss everything in. Bring to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer over low heat for an hour or so to spread these lovely winter aromas around your home.

Serves 16 1 gallon apple cider 2. If you’re serving it to 1 orange, unpeeled, cut adults, add the sherry. into slices It might make everyone 1/4 cup whole cloves want to go sledding!
