n an effort to spread holiday cheer to those serving the country, fifthgraders in Kate Hunter’s class at Minnesauke Elementary School recently participated in the Adopta-Platoon initiative. The students created cards and wrote beautiful messages to service members who are deployed from Fort Campbell Kentucky to Iraq. The troops will receive these cards attached to a box of candy canes, which the students hope will put a smile on their faces.

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,
becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Adults and Children with Learning and D e v e l o p m e n t a l Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Islandbased, not-for-profit agency headquartered in Long Island devoted to providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities to purse an enviable life, has launched a Foundation to focus on fundraising and increasing awareness of ACLD’s mission, which is being headed by new officers and board members recently appointed. Incorporated in 2016, the ACLD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization created to support and raise funds for the exclusive benefit of Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. Alan Spiegel of Dix Hills is the Foundation’s first president. “The establishment of the Foundation will allow a greater focus on raising money and securing new support to help ACLD,” said Alan Spiegel, President of the ACLD Foundation. “It also will allow the ACLD Board of Trustees to focus primarily on operational issues for the organization, and I’m proud and honored to serve as the Foundation’s first president.” Spiegel, whose wife Ellen serves on the ACLD Board of Trustees and whose son has received support from ACLD for more than 40 years, is a senior advisor with Anchin, Block & Anchin, LLP. International Scholars Ward Melville High School students recently had a mutually rewarding cultural learning experience when the boys and girls basketball teams hosted 38 high school student-athletes from The Hjemly School in Denmark. During the visit, the international scholars accompanied Ward Melville students throughout their class schedule to learn about the education provided in America. “It was really interesting to learn about how their school is set up like a college – with larger
stretches of instruction,” said Ward Melville senior Kiera Ramaliu. “The student that shadowed me was really surprised with the size of our school and student population, as The Hjemly School only has about 200 students.” At the end of the day and in the spirit of fun, the students from both schools competed head-to-head in a basketball tournament. played host to the Danish students by opening up their homes for them to stay that evening. “Through our conversations, I learned how different the game of basketball is in America from the game that is played in Denmark,” said Ward Melville senior Dominic Pryor. “I thought our lives were going to be so vastly different and was surprised to see that the culture divide was a lot smaller and that we have many things in common,” added senior Matt Hudzik. As part of her recent yearlong research project, R.C. Murphy Junior High School science teacher and New York State Master Teacher Dawn Nachtigall has been selected to speak at an international symposium sponsored by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching in San Antonio in
Texas. Over the past year, Ms. Nachtigall has been part of a NSF funded joint research project that is working to develop classroom teachers into teacher leaders. Since 2010, this project has worked with a group of 32 chemistry and physics teachers from high schools in and around Atlanta,
Georgia. The participants complete over 100 hours of professional development each year in both classroom practice and leadership development. For her part, Ms. Nachtigall has been collecting and coding data from transcriptions of these professional development experiences in efforts to show that the teachers have truly internalized the techniques being taught and are becoming teacher leaders. The NARST is an international organization and is one of the premier organizations in the field of science education. Ward Melville High School student-actors and musicians recently dazzled audiences when they took to the stage to perform the Tony Award winning musical “Sweeney Todd.” The story told the tale of a famed barber who
returned to work above a struggling pie shop under an alias after being wrongly sentenced to life. Working with the baker, Mrs. Lovett, the pair sought to seek vengeance against the corrupt judge that sentenced Todd and end up
traveling down a path with deadly consequences. From the opening number, the cast impressed the packed audiences and kept them entertained until the final curtain call.
Art from the Heart facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art
from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.” The 2017 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting www.thefqc. org and www.nyshfa.org. Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at

Stock Market Success Joseph Edgar Intermediate School fifthgraders in Dave Falcone’s class in the Rocky Point School District learned about the ever-changing world of the New York Stock Exchange and achieved high success in this fall’s Stock Market Game. During the multi-week contest, the students were given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in
November and Optimum Community, as part of their Charity Champions program, also contributed $1,250, which brought the school’s donation total to $9,250 for Holiday Magic. Students used their fundraising money and wish lists provided by the Holiday Magic organization to buy gifts for local families. “I would like to thank all the students involved in the SADD Club and Holiday Magic for their altruism and dedication to others. It very easy to lose ourselves in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, but I commend the Mt. Sinai SADD Club members who are true role models for

The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club at Mount Sinai High School partnered with Holiday Magic to bring holiday cheer to local families in need. On Wednesday, December 8th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the SADD Club for the Holiday Magic Dinner where club members presented holiday gifts to less fortunate children and families. The SADD club, led by teacher advisors John McHugh and John Wilson, has participated in Holiday Magic for the past 14 years. This year, the club raised $8,000 at the Annual Turkey Trot held in
an online portfolio. They learned about the fundamentals of investing and how proper research into a company can prove helpful when selecting investment opportunities. The stocks chosen by the class varied from such things as restaurants, beverage companies and department stores. As a result of their efforts, two teams from the school placed in the top

of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts. According to the organization’s website, PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home.

In an effort to spread holiday cheer to those serving the country, fifthgraders in Kate Hunter’s class at Minnesauke Elementary School recently participated in the
AdoptaPlatoon initiative. The students created cards and wrote such beautiful messages to service members who are deployed from Fort Campbell Kentucky to Iraq.
The troops will receive these cards attached to a box of candy canes, which the students hope will help to raise morale and puts a smile on the U.S. military members’ faces.

Additionally, they used their collaborative learning skills to complete a “break out challenge,” which called for them to try and decode clues to unlock a box. Ward Melville High School students learned
introductory coding with the help of librarian Dr. April Hatcher using the website code.org. They learned to program various interactive games, manipulating an object on the screen through a series of challenges, as well as create artistic pieces by coding linear moves on the screen. They also learned about the science and engineering behind a variety of simple technologies by taking them apart and troubleshooting solutions to correct their defaults.

Generous Donation The Long Island Museum announced today that its collections committee voted to approve the acquisition of an original oil painting by artist Jane Wilson, who passed away early in 2015. The painting, titled Storm Light, was completed in 1993 and is a gift of Wilson’s estate. LIM’s Director of Collections and Interpretation Joshua Ruff commented, “We are very happy to be one of a number of institutions that were chosen by Jane Wilson’s Estate to receive her work.” The Long Island Museum collections committee is composed of trustees and
community advisors that meet three to four times annually to vote on new artwork and artifacts for the collection. According to Ruff, they were very excited to see the Wilson painting added to the collection. Storm Light is the fifth example of Wilson’s work to be added to the Long Island Museum’s permanent collection. The museum owns four additional Wilson paintings dating from 1955 to 2000. Other institutions that own her work include the Hirshhorn Museum, the Modern Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Parrish Art Museum.
Jane Wilson, who was a part-time resident of eastern Long Island since 1960, was a talented painter who merged expressionism and realism, creating memorable landscapes known most for their dramatic horizons. After her passing early last year, she was the focus (along with fellow artist Jane Freilicher) of a major exhibition at the Parrish Art Museum. Storm Light will be highlighted as a new acquisition, on prominent display, when the Long Island Museum opens its new season on February 24th, 2017.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols, at St Thomas More RC Church (Hauppauge) at their Tree Lighting ceremonies on Saturday, December 10th (following their 5pm Celebration of the Holy Mass), as well as in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th. Also, the Peace Light was shared at the Matinecock District’s monthly Scouting Roundtable meeting (held at John Glenn HS, Elwood) on Thursday,

Peace Light December 8th. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped
children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in
their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years, it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

Robotics Invitational Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for which was dubbed was FIRST StrongHold™. This past season, and at the Invitational, FIRST robots battled on a 27-by-54-foot playing field on which participants earned points
by accomplishing set tasks. Some of the goals included traversing obstacles, throwing “boulders” into various openings of the castle and climbing the tower – which resulted in extra points. The winning trio/alliance comprised of PatchogueMedford High School Team #329 “Mohawks,” West Islip High School Team #871 “Robotechs” and finally Team #2875 “CyberHawks” of Cold Spring Harbor. The finalists were PlainviewOld Bethpage High School Team #353 “POBots,” Plainedge High School Team #527 “Red Dragons” and finally Wheatley School Team #2872 “CyberCats.” The Invitational is designed to showcase the benefits of robotics programs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education to students, schools, communities and local businesses. As testing results and college entrances are now considered a measure
of a school’s success, the implementation of STEM-focused curricula has become increasingly important to developing the careers of students, who can relate the skills learned from FIRST robotics to positions in the medical, business and other professional industries. FIRST is leading the way for diversification in STEM fields. The robotics competition, according to SBPLI FIRST Robotics Competition CoDirector Debra Winter, is a “launching pad for future professional mathematicians and engineers.
