Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports (NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same

time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports

provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report.

According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit

bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups.

Students Meet Scholar

Students from the Suffolk County Community College Honors Program traveled to Columbia University last week to meet with Dr. Thomas Bailey, Director of the Community College Research Center (CCRC). Housed at Teachers College, Columbia University, CCRC is the leading independent authority on the nation’s

nearly 1,200 twoyear colleges. Bailey, who holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT, has authored or co-authored nine books about various topics connected to higher education. One of his areas of expertise is student persistence, completion, and transfer. Honors students spent a few hours discussing some of the CCRC’s research findings in these

areas and also had an opportunity to discuss higher education equity and funding issues with Dr. Bailey. This is the third year that the Honors Program has visited Columbia University. Honors students met with Dr. Andrew Delbanco, author of College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be in 2012; and in 2013, Honors students met with

Student Spotlight EVOLUTION

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

PLAYING SANTA - Toys and gift cards that were collected during the Full Throttle Magazine Winter Wonderland event on December 3rd were donated to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital during the publication’s 5th Annual Toy Run. Hundreds of Long Island motorcycle riders and fire engines from the Centereach Fire Department roared down Nicolls Road to come spread holiday cheer to the children and their families, many who will be spending the holiday season in the hospital. This year, Santa was hoisted up via Hook & Ladder to see some of the children that were not well enough to meet Jolly ol’ St. Nick in person. Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, ﬂitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish ﬂakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldﬁsh quite like you.

Frost Valley Port Jefferson Middle School sixth-graders continued their school’s 36-year tradition by venturing to Frost Valley from November 5th-7th. During the adventure, which was supervised by science teacher Peter

Burawa, Principal Antonio Santana, and several other teachers and staff members, students had the opportunity to participate in a number of activities and classes. The students learned about orienteering,

Going Green reptiles, birds of prey and fresh water ecology, took a historical tour of the mansion and enjoyed a hike through the mountains and watershed. Students also participated in teamwork and project adventure activities.

Port Jefferson Middle School Environmental Club members attended the Port Jefferson Village Go Green Festival on November 1st to raise awareness and money for various environmental causes. During the event, the students sold home-baked

goods to raise money for an environmental cause. In the past, the students adopted sea turtles from the Riverhead Foundation. In addition, students presented their research about the types of pollution found in the wrack line around Port Jefferson Harbor during

a recent beach cleanup. They also presented recommendations to the village to help alleviate some of the pollution. An exhibit comparing a healthy wrack line to a polluted one was also part of their research.

Exploring Science Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students have been presented with a unique opportunity to participate in a diverse array of STEM programs at Stony Brook University’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education. Now in its second year, the program takes place after school and is taught by Stony Brook faculty and staff. A total of 42 students are enrolled this year.

Since November 13th, the Port Jefferson students have been receiving instruction on water quality testing using the power of biotechnology. During labs, they are actively engaged in a PCR-based detection of waterborne microorganisms, which involves the amplification of DNA. High school teacher and program advisor Jonathan Maletta said the

workshops, which end on December 11th, are teaching students about an important tool used to safeguard human health and the environment in general. In the spring, the students will have the chance to take a new set of workshops through the program, including one on biostatistics.

Most Motivated Port Jefferson Middle School students - Hailey Hearney and Cooper Schoch - were honored by the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson. The students, who received their honors at a luncheon on November

25th, were recognized as the Most Motivated Students of the Month for their efforts as members of the middle school student council. As council members, Hailey and Cooper helped raise money for the Wounded Warrior

Project, led a food drive and helped organize a Thanksgiving luncheon for local senior citizens. In addition to their leadership abilities, both students excel in school sports.

Geo Bee Three Port Jefferson Middle School sixthgraders excelled in the first round of the 2015 National Geographic Geography Bee, held during the week of December 1st. The students, who were

among 17 middle school students to participate in the contest, were quizzed on their geography knowledge during their lunch and recess periods. The top three finalists were Aaron Held, Lucas

Welinder and Asher Calayag. With the highest score, Aaron will move onto the next round, the state-qualifying test. A high score will allow him to then compete on the state level.

Book Grant Secured Two Spanish/Italian teachers from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson have secured grants for new textbooks for students enrolled in upper- and lower-level language classes.

In early October, teachers Nicole PenninoCosta and Celiana Gandolfo applied for grants through the Italian American Committee on Education. Late last month, they learned they were each awarded a $250 grant to be

used toward books. Both Pennino-Costa and Gandolfo learned of the grants through the American Association of Teachers of Italian, of which they are members.

Edna Louise Spear Elementary students in grades 3-5 received a lesson in world peace when they were visited by United Nations and UNICEF representative Shehab Chowdhury on December 4th. Chowdhury spoke about the history and purpose of the U.N. to further the students’ understanding of the International Day of Peace, which is celebrated

every September by the Port Jefferson students. Through a PowerPoint presentation, he discussed how children around the world go without clean drinking water, are malnourished and have their rights stripped away. He told the students they could make a difference in the lives of these children right from their homes in Port Jefferson, for example,

by participating in the UNICEF Tap Program, which raises money for clean drinking water. “This was the perfect time of year to have this assembly, as our students are already involved in many different ways with giving back and helping people in need find peace,” said teacher Nancy Winkler-Brogan, who organized the assembly.

Skyping In Spanish Spanish students in Nicole Pennino-Costa’s multi-level Spanish class at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School had the opportunity to use their skills via a Skype session with Emma Neiman, a 2012 graduate who is

studying Spanish abroad in Chile through Stanford University in California. During the videoconference, Neiman answered questions about her college experience and what she has learned in Chile.

The interview, Ms. Pennino-Costa said, was a chance for her Port Jefferson students to not only use their Spanish skills, but also learn about education opportunities they can pursue in college.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization announced today an agreement to lease 275 Christian Avenue in Stony Brook to “The Jazz Loft.” The extensive collection of jazz memorabilia in educator and jazz musician Tom Manuel’s St. James home is not only incredible, it’s historic. The rich saga of Long Island Jazz musicians and their personal connections to the likes of Count Basie, Louie Armstrong and Duke Ellington will soon be showcased at The Jazz Loft which will permanently house these treasures and more and serve as a jazz performance and education venue as well. Thousands of items, including archives from some of the greatest band leaders of their day, instruments, diaries, autographed pictures, original sheet music, letters from world leaders and vintage LPs, will bring the jazz era to life in epic proportions. Much of his material, dating back as far as the 1920s was handed down to him

personally by legendary jazz greats, who happened to be his friends. Manuel says, “My goal is to entertain, enrich and expand a Long Island community as well as a global community through performance, education and advocacy. Jazz is improvisational, it celebrates personal freedom; Jazz is America’s gift to the world, it is always swinging!” Manuel’s musical training began with an education degree at Boston University College of Fine Arts followed by over a decade of teaching in the public school system and a subsequent master’s degree in Jazz History. He will soon receive his doctorate in Jazz Studies at Stony Brook University where he is a teaching assistant in their music department as well as a member of their Pre College Division Music Faculty. He is also the Director of Jazz Studies at Long Island University, C.W. Post campus in Brookville. “Bringing this culture to Stony Brook Village was
