P.J. Gelinas Junior High School ninthgrader William Sun has accomplished something very few upperclassmen do by their senior year – he earned a perfect score on the October 22nd ACT exam. William’s score landed

in him the top 1 percent of the more than 2.1 million students who took the exam. However, this is not the first time he earned top honors on a collegepreparation exam – he earned a 1500 on the 1600 SAT last year as an eighthgrader.

“I was excited to receive my high marks, it made all of the hard work I put into preparing worth it,” said William. “To those getting ready to take the test I recommend they take lots of practice exams to get use to the style and pacing of the test. It goes quickly but I believe the preparation leaves you feeling ready to succeed.” William believed it was important to take the exam early in his ninthgrade year to leave a positive impression on the colleges he hopes to attend. INTERFACE Toy Drive On December 16th, all five JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All of the popular personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio 103.9, Party 105, La Fiesta 98.5 and JVC’s newest station, Oldies 98.1, will be broadcasting from the lobby at Town Hall. The event is open to the public and will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who stop by are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a child of a family in need as they open a gift during the holiday season. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys,

ranging from board games and dolls to toy trucks and bicycles. Supervisor Romaine said, “Thanks to our Youth Bureau, JVC Broadcasting and the generous residents of Brookhaven Town, so many children will enjoy a Merry Christmas this year. I urge everyone to come down to Town Hall, join in the festivities and donate toys for this great cause.” The INTERFACE Toy Drive is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau. Through raising donations, they will provide presents for more than 7,000 children in need, ranging in age from infant to 15 years of age. Donations can be dropped

When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

Winter Wonderland This past weekend, over 650 Angela’s House children, their siblings and their parents joined together to usher in the 2016 holiday season. With the continued support from Arthur Krantz, owner of PRC Industries and founder of We Care for Kids, Inc. Foundation and John Guadagno and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 25, the Hauppauge union hall was transformed into a winter wonderland for the children and families of Angela’s House. Founder and Executive Director Bob Policastro said of the event, “It was an amazing weekend! We Care For Kids, Inc. was able to setup a fantasy holiday environment that fostered great joy and smiles for the medically fragile children of Angela’s House. We are blessed to

have the support to make this possible.” Balloon Bouquets of Long Island decked out the room helping to really set the tone of a festive party atmosphere and Parties by Ziggy provided non-stop entertainment, helping get the children out on the dance-floor and setting the bar high for the energy

Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive a gift, and thanks to Mr. Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able

to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met. For a few hours, the stresses of caring for a

medically fragile child were backseat to creating lasting memories and enjoying the holiday season.

Incredible Ices, Incredible Ivan the magician and some really talented face painters added so much to the event, as did performances from local kick-line groups and dance groups like the Arrowettes from Sachem and the Patchogue Medford Raiderettes. The children and their parents we captivated by the presentation and special guests that Long Island’s own Nature Nick provided, including an armadillo, monkey, owl and even a kangaroo!

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late.

Members of the entire Port Jefferson School District music department shared their musical talents at the 21st annual Charles Dickens Festival’s Victorian Tea held at the First Presbyterian Church in the Village of Port Jefferson Village on December 3rd and 4th.

Musical ensembles that performed holiday favorites included the fifthgrade select choir, the high school jazz combination, the middle and high school orchestras and the high school chamber choir. In addition to performing at the Victorian Tea, the middle and high school

We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

team since the seventh grade. She has played the sport since the age of 4. “I watched my brother play soccer since I was a baby. It was natural to follow in his path,” said Colucci. In addition to playing soccer, Colucci is also a basketball player, president of her school’s Varsity Club, a member of the National Honor Society and treasurer of the Interact Club. Colucci plans to attend Marist College in the fall. Lillie Mae Johnson was born December 20th, 1916, in Southold, to Cleveland and Frances Howard and had three sisters and three brothers (of which four are deceased). She married Carl Johnson in 1936 and settled in Greenport where she gave birth to three

children, Elizabeth, Carl Jr. (deceased) and Kenneth. Lillie Mae worked as an Assistant Cook for 20 years preparing meals under the watchful eye of her mother Frances, as Head Cook, and later became a Nurse’s Aide at Eastern Long Island in Greenport, until her

retirement. In 2001, she and Carl moved to Coram until his passing in 2001. While living in Coram, she became an active member of the Senior Nutritional Program at Faith Baptist Church and was also an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Southold specializing in teaching and doing crafts. In 2015, she came to Woodhaven Center of Care in Port Jefferson Station, where she enjoys the daily activities and making friends. In addition to her son-in-law and daughter, Lillie Mae is blessed to have three granddaughters, two great-grandsons, one stepgranddaughter and three step great-grandchildren. A celebration was held at Woodhaven with family and friends. The staff at Woodhaven feels blessed to share this special day with Lillie Mae.

served in World War II, Vietnam, and Korea at a Salute Our Veterans and Thanksgiving luncheon. Special Education and Social Studies Teacher Zachary Gallo said, “The luncheon was a time to thank the veterans and spend time with them. We have our freedoms and rights because of their service to our country.” Gallo said, “Students learned a valuable lesson in patriotism and what it means to serve in the military.” Some of the students had never met a veteran or someone who served, or is serving, in the military. Honorees included Roger Kilfoil from the Honor Flight Program;

Douglas Cox, World War II Veteran; Michael Chierico, Vietnam War Veteran; Derrick Sperling, Air Force Veteran; Michael Calderone, Army Veteran; Brian Darren, Vietnam War Veteran; and Matthew McGiff, active duty service member. Ninety-two year old World War II veteran Douglas Cox spoke of his experiences as an aeronautical engineer during World War II and shared how he transported supplies between Hawaii and other locations within the Pacific. He also spoke about his trip with Gallo to Washington D.C. through the Honor Flight Program. The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization that was launched to transport World War II and Korean War veterans to

Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials. Gallo personally escorted Cox to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials. Gallo’s students also wrote letters to Cox thanking him for his service and told him how they were inspired by him. In his closing remarks, Physical Education Teacher Chris Poplaski said, “It can’t be said enough. Thank you to the veterans and to those actively serving. You are the heroes that inspire us to do great things.” Students in the carpentry class were inspired to create a patriotic clock made from repurposed materials. It is being donated to the VA Hospital in Northport where Mr. Poplaski donates his time.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Jackie Brown has been named as a member of the All-Long Island field hockey team as part of Newsday’s All-Long Island Sports Awards. Brown, who will play field hockey in the fall of 2017 at Adelphi University, has been involved in the

sport since the age of 6. She has been a member of the high school’s varsity field hockey team since the eighth grade and holds the leading goal scorer title for Long Island. She has also been named as an All-State and All-Tournament player. In addition to playing field hockey, Brown is a

member of her school’s softball and basketball teams. She is also the vice president of the Student Organization, co-president of the Varsity Club and a member of the Yearbook Club and National Honor Society.

Crime Scene Shoeboxes

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School forensics students recently participated in a threeweek hands-on, crime scene-processing lesson. For the unit, teacher Amanda Brideson asked students to write a mock crime scene story and then

use a shoebox to depict the crime scene in detail within a shoebox. To culminate the lesson, students heard from Suffolk County Deputy Inspector Bill Doherty. Inspector Doherty provided students with a wealth of knowledge about how homicides

and crime scenes are property documented. He also shared first-hand experiences. “This lesson helped to bring the information they were learning from their textbooks to life,” said Brideson.

The Long Island Fight for Charity, one of Long Island’s largest and most anticipated annual networking events and fund raisers to support local charities, held its 13th Main Event on November 21st. The event fight card listed 9 bouts featuring 18 business professionals who volunteered to train to be Charity Boxers. They went toe-to-toe with opponents in the boxing ring to the cheers of a sold-out crowd. There is no other charity event like this anywhere in the country. The boxers prepped for their bouts by training at least twice a week to start, ramping up to more frequent and even daily workouts in the final weeks leading up to the Main Event. While undergoing rigorous training, the boxers improved their physical stamina and, in total, lost hundreds of pounds. “This year we had a select group of remarkable and dedicated volunteer boxers who demonstrated their tremendous character, determination and drive as they trained and raised funds for their fellow Long Islanders in need,” said Cofounder Jamie Austin. Long Island Fight for Charity will be donating approximately $80,000 to Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School, the National Foundation for Human Potential, and

other local charities. Since 2003, the organization has donated over $1 million to charities. “Our volunteer boxers are truly an inspiration to everyone who meets them. They train for months and selflessly give their time to raise funds to help us reach our goal. Just their dedication of time to the training process for this event is awe-inspiring and speaks volumes about their personal character. The volunteer boxers are the real heroes, sacrificing their time, energy and bodies for the benefit of others,” said Co-founder Jeff Cohen. speech competition’s preliminary rounds held at Hofstra University on Sunday, December 4th. Shakir and Chuisa were one win away from advancing to the award rounds before they were
