‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events. The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it. • Keep portions in check. Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more. • Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one healthy choice. • Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items. • Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event. If you’re not hungry it will be easier to avoid overeating. • Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge. • Treat yourself. Try bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it. • Balance is the key. For example, if dinner is going to be a feast, opt for a lighter lunch. • Eat smart at holiday events. They often serve up extra helpings of less-than-healthy foods. If you’re a guest, eat a healthy snack before you go. If you’re the host, challenge yourself to offer some delicious healthier options using our recipes and cooking tips.

In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was
the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

Students lined the hallways of Tecumseh Elementary School, as a procession of nearly a dozen veterans from every branch of the military paraded through the building. The retired servicemen and women came on behalf of the American Legion, and represented several posts across Long Island. The event served as an opportunity for the students to honor and thank the veterans for their service. Tecumseh
Elementary School (TES) is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides support and services to elementary school-aged children with special needs. After the parade, the veterans visited multiple classrooms to eat breakfast with the students and discuss what it was like serving in the military. Students asked the retired soldiers about their time in the armed forces. As the day came to a close,
the students presented the veterans with handmade cards thanking them for their service. “This is a great way to help make history real for our students,” said Danielle Dennis, a fifth grade teacher at TES. “It also helps the veterans feel a stronger connection with the younger generations. We’re really happy we could make this connection happen in a way that benefits our students and our veterans.”

It had, however, further piqued my interest in finding a cure for cancer,” said Dr. Desai. “This led me to medicine, and eventually

Ward Melville High School’s Invictus yearbook staff captured six awards when they recently attended the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C. The event, which is the semiannual gathering of high school journalists and advisers is co-sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association, which is the largest gathering of student journalists in the country. During the convention, the students participated in hundreds of practical and professional learning sessions and competed in various competitions in categories such as writing,
design and photography. This was a national competition in which students from throughout the country submitted designs that strove to represent the theme “Big Questions, Big Results.” According to JEA, the Scholastic Journalism Week “celebrates student journalists who ask important questions about the world around them and thoroughly and accurately convey solid reporting to benefit the audience in a big way.”
Teaming Up For Equality A team of studentactivists from P.J. Gelinas, R.C. Murphy and Ward Melville High School worked to bring positive changes to the world as they took part in the 2019 ERASE Racism Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conference at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. During the event, the students joined with more than 80 of their peers from throughout Suffolk County to tackle issues of racial equity and justice. Current
ERASE Racism Student Task Force members led a panel discussion, where they spoke about the opportunities they’ve had to advocate for racial equity and inclusive learning through their participation in the Student Task Force. Then, all participated in a question and answer session and spent the afternoon in a series of intensive workshops and developing strategic action plans to help guide them in implementing
the improvements they wanted to see. The event culminated with a Gallery Walk, where students were able to view each group’s action plan. According to the organization, “the conference was devoted to educating students on racism, and giving students a voice to express themselves, so that they could begin the process of initiating change.”

SAILING DUO AWARDED SEASON TROPHY - Lilly Jette and Isabella Seminario, two students from The Stony Brook School, were named winners of the The Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association Season Championship for their joint performance on the 420 sailboat on Nov. 16. This championship consisted of nine regattas and over 40 races with 70 competitors in which the two sailors consistently won or placed highly in—achieving the top score for the season. LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations.
