Ward Melville High School’s Key Club coordinated a fun-spirited food drive this November called the Turkey Teacher Competition, which collected donations for several local food pantries. For the drive, the school’s students and faculty members donated nonperishable food items in boxes corresponding to several faculty volunteers. At the end of the drive, the faculty member whose box had received the least amount of nonperishable items wore a “turkey hat”

Spirited Holiday Drive during the last day of classes before the holiday break. This year, the club, which is advised by Annette Goldberg and Allison Kane, collected 3,388 items. This year’s contest “winner” was high school dean Jay Negus. The collected items will not only benefit local families, but also those serviced by St. Isidore’s food pantry in Riverhead, St. James’ food pantry in Setauket, St. Gerard’s food pantry in Terryville and St. Margaret’s food pantry in Selden.

Preparing For The World

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from the Health Related Occupations Program (HRO) took their first steps to learn about the health care industry and job opportunities when they toured Medford Multicare Living Center. Presently, seven ESBOCES students are engaged in Project SEARCH internships at Medford Multicare learning marketable skills. Every ten weeks, Project

SEARCH students rotate into a new department and learn new skills. Said ESBOCES Teacher Linda Niosi, “We want the students to feel fulfilled and learn more and more skills.” Islip Career Center HRO Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “My students are learning the skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level employment in health related occupations. It is important for them to

see firsthand, and become orientated with, the workings of a health care facility.” Project SEARCH students at Medford Multicare are engaging in field experiences and class instruction while being introduced to roles and responsibilities of health care facility jobs in the areas of housekeeping, dietary, clerical, maintenance, and transfer.

Islanders Visit When members of the Setauket Elementary School fifth- and sixthgrade chorus performed at the NY Islanders game against the Detroit Red Wings on November 16th, more than 500 cheering fans attended to see their pitch-perfect performance. To show their appreciation for the students’ performance and their crowd-filling efforts, three Islanders recently

visited the school. During the school assembly for grades 3-6, forward Eric Boulton and defensemen Aaron Ness and Matt Carkner spoke about leading a healthy lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and teamwork. Following the informative program, the students in grades K-2 demonstrated their school and NHL spirit by highfiving the visitors as they exited the building.

The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1st with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William

Decking The Halls

As part of a schoolwide community outreach effort, Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff members donated hundreds of items to this year’s Boxes for the Soldiers Collection Drive. The effort, which was coordinated by the school’s Shared Decision Making Team in collaboration with

Brookhaven National Lab, collected more than 40 boxes of donations, with an additional 20 cases of energy bars donated by Tristan Rowland’s family. Donations included toiletries, socks, hats, blankets and a variety of ready-to-eat goods. The boxes, which were decorated by sixth-grade

volunteers, included student-crafted cards and thank-you letters to the soldiers. The donated boxes will be sent to a platoon station in Afghanistan, and to a staff member’s nephew who is stationed in the Middle East.

Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Having Dr. Heller and VT Margaret share their knowledge with the students regarding how to perform a complete examination, to draw blood and administer vaccinations, reinforces what they are learning in the classroom. There’s nothing like learning something firsthand from an expert in the field.” Dr. Jack Heller, a former Huntington veterinarian, purchased the Westhampton Beach Animal Hospital and is known for his compassionate care of animals. The students welcomed the customers, checked

and completed any necessary paperwork for the animals, and weighed and took the temperature of each animal before Dr. Heller began the examination. Rebecca and Raquan, both Riverhead CSD students, helped disinfect the table between examinations. Rebecca said, “It’s important to wipe down the table so there is no cross-contamination. It’s for infection control.” Rebecca, Riverhead CSD, disinfects the examination table. Raquan came to class early to help out. He was looking forward to learning how to draw blood. “Margaret showed us how to hold a dog and draw blood from the front leg of a dog,” said Ray. “She showed us step-by-step and explained the whole process very well.” The low-cost vet clinic services included examinations, rabies vaccines, feline leukemia vaccines, blood panel, flea treatment, stool analysis, and more. The prices ranged from $10 - $40. Ms. Beckmann said, “We are planning on offering the low-cost veterinary clinic again in 2014.”

Common Core Conversation introduced the Common Core State Standards Initiative along with other available resources that provide further insight for parents. “The Common Core Initiative is aimed at instilling a common understanding for students, parents and educators about what students should know and be able to do by the time they graduate high school

to succeed in college and careers,” said Mrs. Hull. Following Mrs. Hull was Principal Santana who expounded on the shifts, pointing out that curriculum being taught went from more material with less depth to less material with much greater depth. “The modules that we are using represent the ways that our students think about math,” he said.

The floor was then turned over to the sixth-, seventhand eighth-grade math teachers present who discussed Common Core testing versus No Child Left Behind testing, the use of action phrases and math tools in the classroom, how Common Core affects special education, and the difference between conceptual, structural teaching methods and procedural methods. They also worked through sample test questions to demonstrate the shifts in thinking and application of knowledge that students will have to apply when being tested. “The reason why the Common Core is stress-inducing is because we all care about the success of our kids,” said Santana. “Common Core isn’t a bad thing. I have faith that if we can adapt to the changes, become proficient in it and expand to other teaching methodologies, our kids will be in a better place – the long-term effects will be positive. We need to work together to focus on what’s important – our kids to be successful when they reach college and beyond.” Santana continued by pointing out that growth and improvement do not come without some sort of challenge. “It’s important that we encourage our students to feel comfortable with going to their teachers and to their parents for help, encouragement and support.”

On November 20th, the Port Jefferson School District PTSA hosted Common Core Conversation: Middle School Math, which focused on the new Common Core math modules for grades 6-8. Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Maureen Hull, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana and middle school math teachers Monica Consalvo, Matt Garofola, Megan Ryan and Jamie Veraldi discussed module terminology, a summary of the curriculum, and resources to support students’ work at home. Superintendent Bossert began the twohour informational meeting by providing a brief overview of the Common Core State Standards and the rationale behind the shift to Common Core, as well as the potential consequences of failing to make the shift. “There are many ways to approach the implementation of Common Core,” said Bossert. “I have been very impressed with the faculty, staff and community of Port Jefferson because of the way that the entire movement has been addressed – we recognize it as a challenge and are working to rise to meet that challenge.” Next, Mrs. Hull detailed the six pedagogical shifts in mathematics demanded by the Common Core State Standards – focus, coherence, fluency, deep understanding, application and dual-intensity. Sharing Thanksgiving Setauket Elementary School fifth-grade students in Adrienne D’Onofrio’s class celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with local seniors when they prepared a traditional feast with the residents at Jefferson’s Ferry retirement community. As part of a yearlong

script and deciphered the play’s emotions,” he said. “I wanted them to be mentally prepared for the context of this show, which is unlike what we typically perform. It was a raw performance that touched opinions that are deeply rooted in how people are raised. It challenges the viewer to be accountable for their actions and inspires them to reflect on how they are living.” The performance of “The Laramie Project” ties in with character education programs that students throughout the district have been participating in, such as Red Ribbon Week; One Book, One School; Stop the Violence and more. Additionally, the drama club donated $1 from every ticket sold to the Matthew Sheppard Foundation. “The show wasn’t just about homophobia, but rather, it was about how

everyone is unique,” said drama club president and senior Sydney Ruggiero. “As a society, we need to accept our differences more and do what we can to prevent people from being discriminated against.” Members of the cast and crew have received a generous amount of positive feedback from their classmates, the faculty and staff, even in the days and weeks following the performances. “The show may be over, but the message is still being passed on, and that was what we were trying to accomplish,” said Sydney. “It goes to show that you’re never too tiny to make a difference,” added cast member Liane Russell. “We may be a small group of students, but we moved our audiences, including people we have never even met before. That says something.”

Members of the National Junior Honor Society were among just some of the Port Jefferson middle and high school students who came together for an impromptu afternoon of fun on November 7th. When a cancellation inhibited student members of Athletics For All from participating in a scheduled after-school event, friends stepped in to ensure the

day would not be lost. The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School gymnasium filled with the sights and sounds of basketball and soccer games, cheers of support and laughter of enjoyment, all making for an afternoon to remember. “Everyone had a wonderful time,” said Port Jefferson Middle School teacher Michelle

Landetta, who was present along with teaching assistants Tracy Gray and Bonnie Kelsch. “It was great to see the students join together to support each other and partake in friendly camaraderie as a community. A day that could have been less than ideal turned into something that means so much to everyone involved.”

On November 15th-17th, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Drama Club, under the direction of Anthony Butera, performed The Laramie Project, which recounts the true story of the 1998 hate-crime murder of University of Wyoming gay student Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyo. “Being a part of this performance really opened my eyes,” said senior Maggie Butera. Added castmate Jessie Gray, “Laramie is a small town, much like it is here in Port Jefferson. Many people think that something of this nature doesn’t or wouldn’t happen here, but it could and that’s why we wanted to be a part of this show – to spread awareness.” Before tryouts, Butera hosted a workshop to help prepare students for the audition process. “The students read through the

community service project, the fifth-graders visit the establishment each month to meet with residents and engage in relationshipbuilding activities. During their November visit, the students helped prepare several holiday side dishes – including mashed potatoes, a pudding pie and

Project Lifesaver is a tracking system for Suffolk County residents who care for children or adults that have the propensity to wander from their homes or care facilities. The system is designed

to assist law enforcement and rescue agencies with locating lost or missing persons. Registered Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery-operated transmitter bracelet that emits an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Each transmitter has a range of several miles, and has its own frequency, enabling Deputy Sheriffs to positively locate and identify a missing person. To date, the Sheriff’s Office has purchased a total of ten tracking units with asset forfeiture funds, and recently expanded the number of Deputy Sheriffs trained to use the
