2020 ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS - The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently announced the winners of their 27th Annual Gurwin Photo Contest. The Best-In-Show award was received by Jan Golden of Stony Brook for her picture “Happy Family.” The Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center recently announced the winners of their 27th Annual Gurwin Photo Contest. Thirty winning photos were chosen from among more than 450 entries for permanent display in the 460-bed nursing and rehabilitation facility. Taking top prize of Best-in-Show this year was Jan Golden (Stony Brook) for her photo “Happy Family.” In light of the times and in the interest of safety, the awards ceremony was held virtually via Zoom, and included video commentary by winning contestants. Zoom participants enjoyed a slideshow presentation of the year’s winning selections, as well as winners from past contests. The virtual format made it possible to have winners send in prerecorded videos of themselves, offering an inside look at the story behind their photos, their love for photography and their thoughts on what it means for their photos to be selected as winners in the Gurwin Photo Contest. Gurwin’s renowned photo

contest is much anticipated each year. The striking photos hung in the Center’s Tiffen Gallery—named for perennial contest sponsor The Tiffen Company after founder Nat Tiffen—are a signature element of the warm and welcoming environment at Gurwin. Each year, winning portraits are added to the gallery, with older photos moved to resident units for yearround enjoyment. More than 1000 photos now adorn the walls of the nursing and rehabilitation center and are admired daily by residents, staff and visitors alike. “Happy Family” shot by Jan Golden was the Best-In-Show winner in the 2020 Gurwin Photo Contest. Almer, President and CEO of the Gurwin Healthcare System, of which the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center is a part. “The installation of the new artwork throughout our Center is something we all look forward to, and we are particularly touched by the continued support of the community during such a challenging year.” The Gurwin Photo Contest opens each year for submissions on February 15th. History of the Dreidel Dreidels are especially popular during the eightday Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very

successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the

Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”

New Toy Donations Needed to Help Those in Need

Mariposa Family Assistance Program, located at 782 Larkfield Road in East Northport will be holding a toy drive on Thursday, December 10th from 12-5PM. They are a community based organization with a goal to support all families in need, regardless of religion, race or financial status. Recently they accumulated donations for victims of a multi-family house fire in Islip Terrace. They regularly receive

donated gently used clothing, toys, books and essential baby items to give away monthly. Between March and August of 2020, they had 8 giveaways a month to supply a vast number of people in need and contributions poured in from community members! Mariposa is now seeking new toys for children (infants to 18 year olds) in our community. They normally put bins in stores and display a Christmas

tree with names of those in need in local nail and beauty salons, however, this year is different and they are having a difficult time. They are in need of help, so if you can, please drop off a new unwrapped toy at their Drive Through Toy Drive on Thursday, December 10th from 125PM (they are located just south of Savers on Larkfield Road). The menorah is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Chanukah. Displayed in homes, and often in windows, each year, the menorah is a ninebranched candelabrum that symbolizes Chanukah and much more. Menorahs have been part of the Jewish faith since ancient times. Isaiah 42:6 indicates that the menorah is a symbol of the nation of Israel, and its mission is to be a “light unto nations.” After being liberated from slavery in Egypt, the Jews were commanded by God to make the original menorah,

which at the time featured seven branches. The seven arms were believed to refer to the seven days of creation. The menorah was lit every evening and cleaned every morning. The wicks were replaced and fresh, consecrated olive oil was put into the cups to keep the flame alive. After the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and desecrated by the Romans, there remained only enough sealed, consecrated olive oil left to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, giving the Jews enough time

to make new consecrated oil. This became known as the Chanukah miracle. While the original menorahs were sevenbranched, the Chanukah menorah, or Chanukiah (Hanukkiah), became a nine-branched version lit only during the holiday. According to the Jewish holiday site Breaking Matzo, celebrants light a new candle or wick on each night of Chanukah. The ninth night, called the Shamash (“helper” or “servant”), is used to light all the other candles or oil lamps. To be kosher, the Shamash must be placed on a different level than the eight other candles. After both temples were destroyed, a new tradition developed in which Jews did not replicate anything from the destroyed temples. As a result, menorahs used in many Jewish services, apart from Chanukah, no longer had seven branches. Sixbranched menorahs became popular in some synagogues. However, the Jewish Virtual Library indicates that some rabbis have gone back to seven-armed menorahs for regular services because the modern ones are electrified and, therefore, cannot possibly be duplicates of the original Temple menorah. Lighting the Chanukah menorah gives celebrants the ability to embrace the holiness of the holiday and take a small part in Jewish history.

ROCKY is an approximately 12-14 year old male German Shepherd mix. Sadly, Rocky and his two siblings (Cali and Suzie) found themselves orphaned when their dad passed away. This sweet old fella deserves the chance to live out his days in a warm home with a loving family. Rocky has significant arthritis and hearing loss. While Rocky does get along with his siblings, he should be the only pet in the house, if adopted without them. He adores being the object of attention and being around people. Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident

for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. The entire project sprang quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado

Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:

“I have 6 kids and no tree… we would like it if it’s still available.” “If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.” “My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling. We need a tree desperately.” “It will be my daughter’s first Christmas and we just don’t have the $$ for a tree.” “I have a boys group home that really can use it... Let me know.” This year, the requests are just as numerous, and heartfelt. This story is not really even about Christmas trees.
