To gain greater input from stakeholders and plan for the upcoming 20222023 fiscal school year, the Three Village Central School District will be forming a Budget Advisory Committee. The committee will be comprised of district administrators, community members and one student representative. The BAC will be chaired by Deputy Superintendent, Jeffrey Carlson. Residents interested in joining are asked to submit their names and contact information to bacresident@3villagecsd.org

Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club participated in the Town of Brookhaven’s Polar Plunge recently held at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai. The 25 students and coadvisers Deirdre Filippi and Jesse Rosen raised more than $4,500, which will help to sponsor 18 Special Olympics young athletes for the year. The Varsity Club

members annually engage in projects centered around athletics and work to help others while challenging themselves in the process. They also run schoolorganized events and activities that help to raise money for various serviceminded organizations. MPHS Teacher Of 22 Years Selected As Honorary NHS Member This year, the Miller Place High School National Honor Society (NHS) Chapter selected Mr. Beyersdorfer, aka Mr. B., as its honorary member for his commitment to teaching and helping his students with their education and application processes. Mr. B. has been teaching at Miller Place High School for 22 years. He is currently a Global History teacher for 9th and 10th grade students, and strives to help his students learn, grow, and meet their full potential. According to his students, Mr. B. takes time out

of his day to meet with students, offer extra help sessions, and write letters of recommendation for college bound seniors. His students say he frequently checks in with past students in the hallways to see how they are doing and asks about future college or career plans. In addition to being a teacher, Mr. B. is involved in extracurricular activities at Miller Place High School. He is the coach of the varsity badminton team, as well as keeper of the scorebook at basketball games. Mr. B’s commitment to Miller Place High School and his students

is demonstrated through his numerous extracurricular activities and commitment to help all students who pass through his classroom. Collaborative Beach Cleanup Members of the Port Jefferson School District’s Leo Club and Environmental Club joined forces on a November weekend to head to the local waterfront, for not just an ordinary beach outing but a cleanup of the shoreline at Port Jefferson’s East Beach. Along with Leo Club advisers Brian Chalmers and Eva Grasso and

Environmental Club adviser Jonathan Maletta, the students met at the end of Crystal Brook Hollow Road in Port Jefferson’s Harbor Hills, which meanders into East Beach. They worked together collecting various debris and discussing the source of debris found. The community service event was sponsored by the Village of Port Jefferson

and Coastal Steward Long Island’s Adopt a Beach Program. “The event was wellregarded as a way to encourage more leadership roles in the community, sharing pride and responsibility as well as a greater understanding of local environmental issues,” Chalmers said.

When Rocky Point Middle School and Rocky Point High School students and staff were called upon to gather much-needed items for two Suffolk County nonprofit animal organizations, they stepped up to donate canned food, blankets, accessories,

treats, carrier beds, crates and more. Rocky Point Middle School students in Jennifer Gordon’s Family and Consumer Science class took the ask a step further and created stuffed animal-friendly toys: dog “bones” and cat “mice.” Mrs. Gordon was

excited to team up with Patchogue-based Almost Home Animal Rescue and Nesconset-based Paws of War, which received the collected items for their seventh annual Thanksgiving Shelter and Rescue Drive.

Meet the Reboli Center’s December Artisan: Jodi Still, Whimsical Mice Maker

Being a military spouse, Jodi Still traveled a lot and lived in many places. One home was on a small farm, where a family of mice also took up residence in the chicken coop. According to Jodi, “I was fascinated with the little creatures. About 12 years ago, I brought a colony of mice to life in several children’s stories. It was then that I started to create and make the felt mice. I decorate some according to the season and others are engaged in activities that humans also perform.” Jodi has a bachelor’s in design from Buffalo State College. That proved to be an asset in creating A Mouse in the House, her collection of felt mice and ornaments. The Port Jefferson School District congratulates students Olivia Schlegel, Kate Sommerstad and Brennyn Veit for qualifying for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Swim Championships which were recently held at Ithaca College. Kate finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 500-yard freestyle. Olivia finished seventh in the

200-yard individual medley and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke while Brennyn finished 23rd in the 200-yard individual medley. As expected, Kate and Olivia improved their performance from the 201920 state championship — championships were not held in 2020-21 due to the pandemic. In only her second season in independent swimming, Brennyn finished with one

of her best times in the 200 IM. “Although our numbers for swimming are small, Port Jeff’s performance is always big at the championship events,” Athletic Director Adam Sherrard said. “I look forward to watching Olivia perform at a high level at the state championship again next year and reading about Kate and Brennyn’s success swimming at the collegiate level.”

‘You Call The Shots’ - United Way Of Long Island Receives Grant From CDC Foundation

United Way of Long Island is being funded to support effective community outreach centered on communities of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) in order to share accurate, culturally appropriate information about the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines as well as link adults to vaccine services. United Way, with funding through the CDC Foundation, will work to increase local COVID-19 vaccination rates through the initiative You Call the Shots—Protecting Communities, Empowering Families and Stopping Myths. United Way’s program addresses the inequities in vaccination coverage that exist across different racial and ethnic populations on Long Island by improving access and raising knowledge through educational campaigns to decrease hesitancy and overcome refusal to vaccinate. Nassau and Suffolk Counties have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic with over 374,000 cases and 6,452 deaths, and residents continue to suffer the consequences: severe illness, job loss, decrease in income, unstable housing, separation and isolation. These numbers, in combination with vaccine data, illustrate the critical need for increased vaccine coverage. Compared to the overall Long Island population, vaccination rates differ greatly among African Americans and Latinos: 6.4% of African Americans and 12.6% of Latinos have received at least one dose. The CDC Foundation helps the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) save and improve lives by unleashing the power of collaboration between CDC, philanthropies, corporations, organizations and individuals to protect the health, safety and security of America and the world. Since January 2020, the CDC Foundation through the support of its donors has addressed

a wide variety of critical needs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work includes providing personal protective equipment for frontline responders; care kits for schools, jails and the unhoused; studies examining the impact of COVID-19; work to strengthen communities and community-based organizations to improve vaccination uptake and address misinformation; projects focused on health more than 100 projects focused on health equity; and much more. United Way of Long Island’s You Call the Shots will focus its work in six communities designated by New York State as high priority for increasing vaccination rates: Elmont, Hempstead, Freeport, Huntington Station, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The organization will utliize its existing partnerships with corporate entities, government, labor, community leaders, school systems, health providers and over 100 funded communitybased agencies to increase vaccine confidence and uptake through: Bilingual community navigators who will connect Long Islanders to vaccination sites and providers. They will visit and speak with residents about the importance and safety of vaccines, while providing information on vaccination sites and availability. Navigators will work with state and local health departments to ensure pop-up clinics are located in areas where and when needed, as well as schedule appointments, arrange transportation when necessary, and provide facts about COVID-19 and

the vaccine in multiple languages. Leveraging trusted community-level spokespersons to provide consistent, factual and compelling science-based messages in support of vaccination. Spokespersons will be trained on COVID-19 facts and equipped with compelling scientific information to engage with residents and diseminate information through local media outlets, social media, faith-based venues, community events and other community-based, culturally appropriate venues. Building trust with community members to address the concerns people have about COVID-19. To increase confidence in and encourage vaccination, United Way of Long Island spokespersons and health care partners will help combat misinformation, stop myths and build public trust through community outreach and education forums. Funding for this effort is made possible through a subaward from the CDC Foundation and is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) financial assistance award totaling $25,660,048 with 100 percent funding from CDC/HHS. Over lunch, Victoria and Geraldo shared the history of Life’s WORC and the amazing progress it has made over the past five decades. Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who

had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the
