My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.
Nearly 500 Long Island educators gathered this past November for a daylong series of workshops and lectures focused on improving early childhood education. The “Best Practices for Teaching Pre-K and K” Conference was presented by the Long Island Pre-K Initiative and featured some of the region’s most important and progressive opinion leaders in preschool education. The Long Island Pre-K Initiative identifies challenges to preschool education in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and develops strategies to meet those challenges, such as sharing resources and best practices, offering professional development, d i s s e m i n a t i n g information, and s t r e n g t h e n i n g partnerships between schools and their communities. The initiative is administered by Nassau BOCES, in partnership with Child Care Council of Nassau and Suffolk, and Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES, with expertise from The Early Years Institute. It is funded through a grant co-administered by the Rauch and Hagedorn Foundations. “Play is disappearing from children’s activities outside of school,” said
Keynote Speaker Nancy Carlsson-Paige, citing one of the most critical challenges to early childhood education. “Play and learning in the early years is the same thing,” she explained. “Children all over the world play and there is a reason why: It’s what drives human development.” Ms. Carlsson-Paige is Professor Emerita at Lesley University and was a Founder of the University’s Center for Peaceable Schools. She has received many awards for leadership and advocacy in early childhood education and has written extensively on the subject, including her most recent book, “Taking Back Childhood: A Proven Roadmap for Raising Confident, Creative, Compassionate Kids.” Also on-hand were Roger Tilles from the New York State Board of Regents, National Early Childhood Specialist Keith L. Pentz, and a host of teachers, administrators and board members. “This conference is part of the important work that we are all doing together,” said Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Strategic Initiatives Lucinda Hurley, in her Welcome Address, “It is part of the incredible work that you do every day, supporting Long Island’s
young learners and their families. That work is critical to the success of our region and our nation as a whole. It builds the foundation that fosters success in learning and relationships that last throughout lifetimes.” “This event brought together a broad spectrum of professionals from across Long Island who are invested in what’s best for young children,” said Conference Chairperson Adrienne Robb-Fund. “Children need to be taught differently when they are younger, and this conference provides educators with the opportunity to share best practices and developmentally appropriate strategies.” Ms. Robb-Fund went on to explain that the initiative also seeks to increase state aid to early childhood education on Long Island, which currently receives the smallest percentage of aid in the state. “Research has shown that students in quality preschool programs have better outcomes both in school and after graduation,” she said. “Educators and parents on Long Island understand the value of having greater access to these programs. We need to make our leaders up in Albany understand that value as well.”

On Tuesday, November 29th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined County Executive Steve Bellone, Veterans Service Agency Director Tom Ronayne, VFW State Commander Dennis Sullivan, and local VFW members at the North County Complex to begin the county-wide American flag remembrance tour to honor the late Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy. Lt. Murphy was a resident of Smithtown, a Navy SEAL, and Medal of Honor recipient. He was killed during battle in Afghanistan in June 2005. Throughout the day, County Executive Bellone was joined by representatives from various groups in each community to raise and lower an American flag at a designated landmark that is significant to the local
veteran community. The flag will be presented to the captain of the USS Michael Murphy next week in Pearl Harbor to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks. “It is important that we take the time to honor and thank the men and women who fight in our armed forces. As the daughter of a Navy veteran, I am proud to stand with our local veterans to begin the American
Flag remembrance tour in honor of Lt. Murphy, a true American hero who sacrificed his life fighting for our freedom,” said Legislator Anker, Vice Chairwoman of the Suffolk County Veterans Committee. Murphy Takes Action In connection with a seventh-grade reading assignment, R.C. Murphy Junior High School students, staff and parent community took action this fall and coordinated a fundraiser to help the more than 8,000 children living in Flint, Michigan who were exposed to lead in their drinking water. Before the start of the year, the students read the book “Water Wars,”
a fictional story about a dystopian society plagued with corporate greed and a lack of available drinking water. With the topic of the book and the news of Michigan’s water problems in mind, the school worked to make a difference in the lives of those living in Michigan who are at risk of medical problems due to the exposure to contaminated water. Students, staff and
faculty bought paper “drops of water” to be sent to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund, which will provide interventions that support positive health outcomes for the affected students. For every dollar raised, up to $5 million, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has pledged to match. Murphy raised $1,500 for the cause.

Upon graduation, she will enter college having received credit from 10 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and three college level courses. In addition, she is also taking AP courses for all of her core subjects during her senior year. She will be attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in the fall and plans to study engineering. Outside of the classroom, Cassidy is an acclaimed athlete including being named the Suffolk Zone’s Best Female Athlete and to the All-Conference Team her junior year. She has participated in both basketball and field hockey at the varsity level since her freshman year. In basketball, Cassidy was named Rookie of the Year as a freshman and has served as her team’s captain since the tenth grade. Matt Schmidt is a senior at Newfield High School
and will graduate with a total of 30 college credits from AP and college level courses, and currently has a GPA of 92.4375. During his senior year, Matt is currently taking three AP courses and three college level courses. Matt will be attending Steven Institute of Technology after graduation, and plans to study electrical engineering. Matt is also a member of the varsity baseball team and is an active member in the Leadership Club and the National Honor Society. Matt has given back to his community by volunteering in several Districtwide initiatives including Trick-or-Treat Street, Holiday Lane, Jump Rope for Heart, and the Special Olympics. Matt is also a first chair bass player for the concert and philharmonic orchestras. Outside of school, Matt also volunteers at Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf and the Friends of Music organization by selling concessions during festivals and between performances.

The Middle Country Central School District recently congratulated two of its high school students for being named the District’s students of the month for November. Centereach High School senior Cassidy Treanor and Newfield High School senior Matt Schmidt were recognized for the accomplishments they achieved in the classroom, on the athletic field and within the community during the month of November. The students were acknowledged at the District Board of Education Meeting, where their long lists of achievements were commemorated. “The District is incredibly proud of all that Matt and Cassidy have accomplished this month and throughout their academic careers,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “As we say goodbye to Cassidy and Matt in June, we will celebrate the positive impact they have made on our school community, and anxiously await how they will serve as leaders in their chosen field in the

Researching Local Waters Rocky Point High School students in Eric Matwey’s Science Research 9-10 class recently applied what they are learning in the classroom to the real world by partaking in a handson research at Sunken Meadow State Park. To prepare for the visit, the students met with New York State Department of Environmental C o n s e r v a t i o n representatives Cassandra Bauer and Victoria O’Neill to review and discuss the environmental testing
procedures they would follow. During the trip, the students conducted a variety of water quality testing to sample specific sites for a variety of plant and animal life. They were able to seine for organisms, including Asian shore crabs, and took readings of water temperature, turbidity, salinity, pH, nitrogen and dissolved oxygen. Students recorded information about the data they collected for further analysis in the classroom.
INTERFACE Food Drive
The visit was part of a program sponsored by the Long Island Sound Study, which seeks to collect valuable data about the Long Island Sound at various locations. The students’ work will provide valuable data about Sunken Meadow State Park and allow researchers to identify and describe how ecosystems change and how they can be impacted by weather events such as Superstorm Sandy. The Brookhaven Youth Bureau INTERFACE program had its most successful Thanksgiving Food Drive ever this year. Residents donated enough food to make Thanksgiving happier for 823 needy families. Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 18th year. This drive will run until December 20th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into
responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot
program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. P.J. Gelinas Junior High School science teacher and department chairperson Gary Vorwald has been named a 2016 STANYS Fellow by the Science Teachers Association of New York State. STANYS Fellows are recognized as outstanding classroom teachers and leaders of science students who have notably contributed to science education at both the local and state levels. The distinction is bellowed upon individuals who have distinguished themselves
through effective teaching and active participation in professional scientific organizations and service to STANYS. Their leadership and scholarly endeavors to science education are considered noteworthy and inspirational to their peers as this is the most distinguished and highest honor bestowed upon a science teacher by his/her New York State colleagues. Mr. Vorwald has taught in the district since 1998 and has been an educator for 30 years. During his time in Three Village, he
has taught nearly every science course offered at P.J. Gelinas, and is the school’s current department chairperson and lead coach of its awardwinning Science Olympiad team. He most recently led Gelinas’ Science Olympiad team to earn a 10th place ranking during the 2016 National Science Olympiad competition. In addition to these accolades, Mr. Vorwald was previously named a New York State Master Teacher.

The Middle Country Central School District Teachers Association is proud to announce that its free book fair for the community was a huge success. Hundreds of students, families and members of the community searched through and took home donated books. Attendees lined up around the corner to take advantage of the program meant to give the gift of reading back to the community. “We are proud of our teachers for the work they do with our students inside the classroom, but also the work they do with them and
the rest of the community outside of the classroom,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “The Middle Country Teachers Association is setting a positive example for our students, giving them the gift of reading and teaching them the importance of giving back.” The teachers of the District aimed to give back to their community in a way that spread the spirit of reading and critical thinking.
