As an additional activity to their Native American social studies unit, Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-graders in the Rocky Point School District recently participated in a Native

American celebration and workshop at the school. During the event, the students were encouraged to dress appropriately in Native American attire as they visited several interactive stations. These

included listening to Native American folktales, creating medicine satchels, decorating shields, making parfleches (carrying pouches) and playing an authentic Native American game.

Learning Career Skills Students in the Law Enforcement Program at the Academy LI at Milliken Technical Center are practicing skills to get them career and future ready. Students enrolled in this program are getting ready for a career in criminal justice, law enforcement, public safety, and other related legal careers. Gearing up with protective helmets, reflective vests, and walkie-talkies, students

patrolled the area around their school on bicycles. They traveled in a group and reported back any suspicious activities to Law Enforcement Teacher Sandra Lochren. “Being on a bicycle provides the students the opportunity to use their senses, sight, hearing, and even smell, to clue them into things that might be out of the norm.” Learning biking and security skills, similar to those used by police officers, while in high

school attending the Law Enforcement Program, is very advantageous. Students learn the positive attributes of cycling as a patrol vehicle. It enables them to navigate around the campus which enhances mobility and range of a typical foot patrol. It could provide swift response to a situation, and it is run by human power so it keeps the operator in good physical condition.

HARMONY CAFÉ!

Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony

Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Sponsors are needed to help support the mission of Harmony Café by helping to fund each event and, in return, they will have their business promoted by the Café. January 7th, 2018 marks opening day for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservations (DEC) special January shotgun season for deer hunting in Suffolk County. Over the past several years changes have been made to existing laws and regulations expanding opportunity for hunters. These changes have been implemented to help increase recreational deer harvest to better manage increasing deer populations in Suffolk County. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/ deer collisions and tickborne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. The regular (bowhunting) season for deer in Suffolk County now runs through January 31st. The 2018 firearms deer season in Suffolk County will begin Sunday, January 7th and continue until January 31st, including weekends. Town permits are now only required in the Towns of Southampton, Islip and Smithtown. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for firearms deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowners endorsement, and a town permit where required. Deer may be taken only by: · Shotgun, using a single ball or slug; · Muzzleloading rifle or pistol, shooting a single projectile having a minimum bore of 0.44 inches.

Shotgun barrels may be rifled, and telescopic sights may be used. Crossbows are not a legal hunting instrument in Suffolk County. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Hunters who wish to hunt on statemanaged lands in Suffolk County will be able to take advantage of the expanded special firearms deer season as well the extended archery season. The following state managed properties will be open for shotgun deer hunting from January 7th to 31st: Rocky Point Natural Resources Management Area; Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Preserve; Henrys Hollow Pine Barrens State Forest; Barcelona Neck Cooperative Hunting

Area; David Sarnoff Cooperative Hunting Area; and Otis Pike Preserve. The East Hampton Cooperative Area and Noyac (part of the Southampton Cooperative Areas) will be open for firearms deer hunting from January 8th to 31st; weekdays only. To hunt for deer on DEC managed lands, during the firearms season, hunters must enter a drawing. Entries must be received at NYSDEC-Deer Drawing, PO Box 659, Ridge NY 11961-0659, by 4:45 p.m., Monday, December 4th, 2017. Entries can also be hand delivered to the Ridge Hunter Check Station by the above date. There are no applications for this drawing. To enter, hunters must send a No. 10 (4 1/8” x 9 ½”) envelope. Spirit of the Season Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Program, “This additional funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will

Antigone Astounds After weeks of rehearsal, Port Jefferson School District’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Drama Club members recently took to the stage to perform a flawless rendition of Jean Anouilh’s “Antigone”

before fascinated audiences. Dozens of students took part in the fall production as actors, chorus members and as part of the lighting, audio, stage construction, painting and refreshments crews. Collaborating

together, the students worked under the direction of Tony Butera to bring the story to life. The show was adapted by Lewis Galantiere and inspired by Sophocles’ work of the same name.

A Local Look Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s Earth SMART classes recently took their learning outside of the classroom and participated in an interactive program call the Flax Pond Marine Lab through Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Department. For the project, the students traveled to the laboratory located in

Old Field, New York to learn about the history, biology, and geology of the area. According to their website “The Flax Pond Marine Lab is an active research and instructional facility involved in investigating fundamental problems affecting marine fisheries on regional and national scales. The lab is located at Flax Pond, a 0.6 km² preserve that encompasses an entire tidal wetland area.”

During their visit, students spent some time in the marsh learning about the ecology and then went inside the lab to learn about what experiments were currently being conducted at the facility, including how temperature affects the growth of blue shelled crab among others. Additionally, the students spent some time on the stream table to learn about erosion and how water moves the soil.

On November 14th, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright thanked students from Boyle Road Elementary School in Port Jefferson Station and members from the Red Knights Motorcycle Club New York Chapter 26 for their contributions to the

Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. Student Council members from the third, fourth and fifth grades initiated a drive at the school where they put out collection boxes for teddy bears.

Organized by members of the student council under the leadership of adviser Allison Giannusa, students volunteered throughout the event as servers and greeters and visited with the attendees socially. Students enthusiastically asked questions about

the seniors’ families and interests and share their own stories in the hopes of creating new friendships. The senior guests were also treated to two preview scenes from “Antigone,” the high school’s fall drama, and several musical selections.

Representatives from the Red Knights Motorcycle Club came to the school to collect the donations. Students at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District recently took part in Sources of Strength, a peer leadership program designed to engage teens through the power of connection, hope, help and strength. In its second year at the high school, the program is designed to harness the power of peer social networks to change unhealthy habits and relationships. The students learned that relying on many sources of strength is more powerful than relying on just one. They broke up into groups, discussing eight key categories: mental

health, medical access, spirituality, generosity, healthy activities, mentors, positive friends and family support. They then shared stories and learned skills to strengthen these sources of protection so that when times get hard they can rely on them. The daylong program was facilitated by two energetic trainers, a representative from Response Crisis Center and Port Jefferson School District social worker Kristin Britt, who advises the program throughout the year and works along with the high school’s two guidance counselors, Kerri Neligon and Kathi Galvin,

and school psychologist, Kristen Wendel, who serve as mentors to the students. According to Janell Anema, a national trainer for the organization, during times of strife students will generally listen more to their friends than to their parents, teachers or other adults and the skills the attendees acquired during the training will aid them in becoming change agents for promoting positive peer relationships. The students will work on projects throughout the year that will include powerful messages for poster campaigns, cafeteria activities and videos for social media.

Experiental Learning The annual trip to Frost Valley for sixthgrade students in the Port Jefferson School District was filled with science exploration, trust-building activities, teamwork, outdoor living skills and nature hikes. According to Principal Robert Neidig, the two days of adventures

included crossing cable bridges, visiting waterfalls and observing animals. Frost Valley educators introduced the students to a variety of birds - an owl, a falcon, a turkey vulture, a python, an alligator and a turtle - and helped them understand how these species spend their days both in captivity and in the

wild. Students also learned orienteering and how to use a compass and read a map. Rounding out the environmental education experience for them were a water ecology lesson and a low ropes course, where they worked on trustbuilding skills.

The R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s foreign language club in the Three Village Central School District hosted their annual volleyball tournament in which more 300 students and staff members participated. Each team consisted of six to eight students and

one staff member and each played in at least five games during the tournament. There were two divisions: seventh-graders and eighth- and ninth-graders. As a result of their winning records, the seventhgrade champions were team “G-Force” and the eighth- and ninth-grade

champions were team “No Names.” The proceeds from the event will be used to purchase school supplies for the Instituto Modelo De Ensenanza Individualizada, which is a school for students with special needs in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Creating Crafts Members of the Arrowhead Elementary School student council teamed up with Stony Brook University’s chapter of the national organization Project Sunshine to create 200 craft bags for children recovering from illness or surgery at the hospital. During the afternoon meeting, the students

folded paper journals and helped to fill bags with colorful stickers, crayons as well as cloth dolls for the recipients to color in. They learned about the mission of Project Sunshine from several chapter members and were inspired by their efforts to bring joy and smiles to the children at the hospital.

In addition to the community service component, the project had a special connection for the students as the after-school initiative was spearheaded by Arrowhead graduate and current Project Sunshine Chapter Leader, Daniel McCaffrey.

judge panels. As a result of their performances, the team was crowned the Suffolk County and Long Island champions out of almost 40 teams in the tournament.

Teddy Bear Project Looking to brighten the days of local children, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grade home and careers classes have created 100 hand-sewn colorful teddy bears for the

Ronald McDonald House. What started as a class sewing project transitioned into a community giving project after the students expressed interest in donating their creations to

children in need or those suffering from illness. In partnership with the Ronald McDonald House, the student’s creations will be delivered to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

The Fashion Merchandising students at the Long Island Academy helped to bring attention to America Recycles Day on November 15th, which was created to raise awareness about recycling and purchasing recycled products. Students worked in partnership with Savers in Holbrook to “upcycle,” or compose innovative fashions by repurposing pieces from many garments found at the store. The Fashion Merchandising class is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

The class visited the store last month and each student chose a variety of clothing to bring back to the workshop to produce new apparel utilizing pieces from multiple items, demonstrating how ordinary products can be upcycled into something new. Jackets, dresses, and shirts now bear only a vague resemblance to their original form as they sport new textures, materials, and asymmetric shapes. One student covered the bodice of a woman’s sweater with a half dozen men’s ties, another put a clear vinyl panel on the back of a denim jacket and wrote her name on it in three languages,

and a third embellished a leopard print jacket with contrasting zebra print and faux fuchsia fur. Their next-generation designs debuted in the store on November 15th and are available for purchase. Said Joyce Simms, Fashion Merchandising teacher, “My students took a lot away from this assignment. They engaged in projectbased learning to refine their sewing and garment construction skills, and also learned the value of looking at clothing to see possibilities that others might not, which in the end, allowed them to bring awareness to America Recycles Day.”

Wall of Wonder their interactions with others helped to sway the students’ opinions of the characters. Connecting to their grade-level English language arts curriculum, the students then identified a precept from the “365 Days of Wonder” book that they identified with and created a “wall of wonders” in the fourth-grade hall using the precepts. Additionally, they reflected on one of the themes of the book – the

choice individuals often have of being right or being kind. The students noted what it means to choose kindness, when the choice between kindness and right may occur and why it is important to choose kindness. In addition, the students in Miss Donato’s classroom created a class book of original precepts and how they are working to make a difference in the world.

Taking the Plunge Twenty-seven students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District recently braved the cold waters of Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai to take part in the eighth annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. Accompanied by teachers Deirdre Filippi and Jesse Rosen, members of the high school’s varsity club participated in the event

that is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven. They were among the hundreds of people out to support the sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Their fundraising efforts helped secure nearly $1,500, which will sponsor four athletes for a year. “We chose the Polar Plunge because as a community serviceminded group, we thought

that it would be a great way for our students to see how their combined efforts could have such a wonderful impact upon the greater community,” said Filippi. “Since our club is centered around student athletes, we couldn’t have picked a better organization (Special Olympics) to help raise money for.”

Professional Development Day The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) will host a Professional Development Day program on Saturday, December 16th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the HYATT Regency in Hauppauge. Second-graders at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School had a special visitor when Village of Port Jefferson Mayor Margo Garant came to their classes to share information on the local community. As part of the secondgrade curriculum, students learned about urban, suburban and rural

regions and started to gain an understanding of civic involvement, economics, geography and history of their own neighborhood to be able to compare these aspects to people of long ago. CAREER AWARENESS - On Thursday, November 2nd, and Friday November 3rd, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright, in conjunction with many local professionals, spent the day in the hallways and classrooms of RC Murphy Junior High School and Terryville Elementary School. Both schools hosted their annual Career Awareness Day and there were community member participants from many backgrounds. From law enforcement officials to veterinarians, to artists and musicians, the students were provided with a wide array of career paths to choose from and learn about.

STUFF-A-BUS - On Friday, November 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Miller Place Fire Department at their 7th Annual EMS Stuff-A-Bus event. The event took place at the Miller Place Stop and Shop where the group collected non-perishable food and personal care items. Members of Marchand’s School of Dance Studio in Miller Place attended the event to lend a helping hand. The collection will benefit the St. Louis de Montfort Parish Food Pantry in Sound Beach and will help local families in need during the holidays.

Spirit of Giving Three Village Central School District’s Minnesauke Elementary School sixth-grade students in Lou Petrucci’s class helped to spread holiday cheer within their local community an abroad during two recent community service projects.

The students made holiday cards, trinkets for gifts and donated gifts to the children at Angela’s House in Stony Brook. This establishment assists families caring for medically frail children living at home with their parents or in special homes that offer 24-hour nursing

support. Additionally, the class participated in Adopt-aPlatoon to provide a bit of the holidays and the comforts of home to those service men and woman deployed oversees. For the initiative, the students made cards for the soldiers with boxes of candy canes.
