Setting The Record Straight

Best friends and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School freshmen Emma Schoepflin and JiWon Woo raised awareness in their school this year in recognition of World Diabetes Day. The campaign, which is celebrated annually on November 14th, is led by the International Diabetes Federation and was created in 1991 in response to the growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. “People don’t always understand diabetes and how it affects young people,” said JiWon, who has

diabetes. “People often make assumptions about what I can and cannot eat and I wanted to be a part of something that helped to educate others on the subject.” The two students spent countless hours making gray ribbon pins, the color representing diabetes awareness, and creating fact sheets about diabetes to distribute to their peers. They also held a bake sale to benefit the American Diabetes Association. “We learned that diabetes kills more Americans every year than AIDS and breast

cancer combined,” said Emma. “That’s something we did not know until we did this research.” The theme of this year’s campaign, “Diabetes: Protect Our Future,” is one that resonated with the young duo. “It’s important that people our age become more educated on the topic of diabetes to help them lead a healthier lifestyle,” said Emma. “We’ve received positive feedback from our teachers and classmates and will definitely be doing this again next year.”

In recognition of their years of athletic commitment and academic dedication, nine Ward Melville High School seniors have been selected to compete on some of the nation’s premier college sports team this fall. Leaving students with more questions than they had before she entered the classroom as a guest speaker is Audrey Bloom’s goal. This Smithtownbased attorney and counselor at law recently spoke to the animal science students at Harry B. Ward Career and Technical Center in Riverhead about animal rights and ethics. The students received printed materials containing information about animal care and law, and engaged in thoughtprovoking discussion with Ms. Bloom, who presented them with a variety of scenarios and

points of view to consider. For example, Ms. Bloom explained certain aspects of New York State animal law to students and asked if they understood. Then she detailed several situations concerning the ethical treatment of animals and the outcomes based upon the law to open up dialogue on the topic and get students thinking about the complexity of animal rights law. She also provided them with a list of things to explore if they wanted to gather additional information on their own, such as the Animal Welfare Act, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Humane

Slaughter Act. “This is always a phenomenal class,” explained Lori Beckman, the animal science teacher who invited Ms. Bloom to visit her class as a guest speaker. “Ms. Bloom is a huge proponent of humane education and she really knows how to get the kids to question the way in which animals are treated and viewed in our society. For students who plan to pursue careers somewhere in this field, I believe that exposure to the subtleties of animal law are as essential as the technical skills they are currently working to acquire.”

Compassion & Kindness Each month, students and staff members at Arrowhead Elementary School focus on a specific positive character trait as they work to promote kindness and compassion within the school and greater community. To drive home the month’s character trait of thankfulness, Arrowhead’s student council helped coordinate a schoolwide food drive for Long Island Cares this November. During the multi-week drive, students, families

and staff members helped fill four large donation boxes with nonperishable food items. With the assistance of Long Island Cares, these donations will be supplied to numerous food pantries, soup kitchens and emergency shelters on the island. As several food pantries continue to report a growing need for supplies due to increased demand, Arrowhead’s contribution is sure to make this year’s holiday season a bright one for local individuals.

Arrowhead has adopted a yearlong character education focus titled “Arrowhead CARES” (compassion, acceptance, responsibility, encouragement and sharing). As a symbol of their commitment to display these types of behavior, students have signed a pledge and are encouraged to participate in some of the activities listed on the school’s kindness and compassion monthly calendar.

Into The Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally

even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.

Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

Ward Melville High School student-actors will perform this year’s musical, the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast,” this December. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on December 12th-14th, with an additional 1 p.m. show on December 14th.

Baking Bread Minnesauke Elementary School kindergartners deployed basic mathematical counting skills as they completed a service project for those in need this holiday season. Demonstrating both kindness and compassion,

the students worked with their teachers and parent volunteers to create nearly 80 mini loaves of pumpkin bread for the Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in Setauket. The students worked cooperatively to measure

both dry and wet ingredients, prepare the batter, and gently pour it into prepared loaf pans. The finished products were baked by several class parents and donated to the soup kitchen in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

VOCAL JAZZ SELECTION - Earl L. Vandermeulen High School vocalist Jessica Gray was selected to participate in this year’s All-County Jazz Festival on February 8th at Sayville High School. Following the performance, these All-County students will travel to Albany to perform for state legislators as part of Music in Our Schools Month, which advocates for music education programs.

The Port Jefferson School District has been serving up gratitude this holiday season. Students in all three schools have been working hard to assist others, make healthier choices and polish their hospitality skills to make for a picture-perfect Thanksgiving. On November 20th, the Port Jefferson Middle School Student Council hosted its annual Senior Citizens’ Luncheon for members of the Port Jefferson Senior Center. Guests were served a traditional Thanksgiving meal by student representatives and were treated to musical performances by sixthgrade violinist Elizabeth Chun and the high school chamber orchestra. Attendees and students

had the opportunity to converse with one another, play games and share some holiday spirit. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in Dinarae Camarda’s Wellness and Fitness class gathered together for their first annual Healthy Thanksgiving Celebration. Students used a favorite recipe and substituted healthy alternatives for one or more of the ingredients. The 75 participants took a closer look at how to properly fuel their bodies and made dishes that were gluten-free, organic, vegan and Paleo Diet-friendly. To conclude the project, the class will compile their recipes and create a healthy cookbook. Students in Kristen Poulos and Karen Stamatopoulos’s class

at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School hosted a Thanksgiving feast on Noveember 25th for family, teachers and staff members. Guests were offered homemade Thanksgiving-themed entrees, beverages and desserts and were given handmade Thanksgiving cards. The festive gathering gave students the chance to experience the roles of being a greeter, host and server and improve upon their hospitality skills. Guests included Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School Principal Thomas Meehan and Executive Director for Pupil Personnel Services Dr. Lisa Scheffer.

Filling Pantries As part of their annual Thanksgiving food drive, Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students and staff members collected hundreds of nonperishable food items for local families. From holiday dinner dishes to dessert treats, the school’s donations overflowed a large bin and were sure to brighten the holiday season for those in need. With the help of the

second-grade Service Club, advised by student assistance counselor Jamie Adamski, the donations were sorted and boxed for delivery just before the Thanksgiving holiday. This year’s donations will provide assistance to 15 families through the Cross Over Christian Church as well as fill the shelves at the Island Heart, Lighthouse Mission, Invited Inn and St. Anthony’s food pantries.

The second-grade service squad is comprised of a group of students nominated by their teacher for being responsible, enthusiastic and motivated to help others. The squad engages in various community outreach projects throughout the year, including coordinating the annual school food drive.

In an effort to further promote physical activity within their school, Port Jefferson Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Debra Ferry and Edna Louise Spear Elementary School physical education instructor Francoise Schachner had students videotape their warmup routine as part of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation and Dance’s “Here’s What We Do to Get Moving” competition. The association works to support quality health and physical education programs in New York State. The elementary students showed off their best aerobic warmup skills while music played during an upbeat cardio and stretching segment. All entries into the competition were

required to demonstrate, in a fun way, how students get moving in their physical education classes. Contestants were able to submit their entry through song, video, poster or poem. The school is in the running for the top prize of $1,000 in equipment. Participating students also received “Get Moving NY” drawstring backpacks to commemorate their contribution.

Thanksgiving Powwow Native American headdresses covered the heads of each secondgrader at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School when they participated in a powwow as a culminating activity for their Thanksgiving unit of study. The interdisciplinary event spanned several subject areas and incorporated music, physical education, art and history. Within their classrooms,

teachers discussed Native American culture as well as what these individuals shared with the Pilgrims when they first arrived. With the help of their art teacher, the students created their feathered headdresses and decorated them with traditional Native American symbols. During the powwow, the students first listened to the story “Giving Thanks: A Native American Good

Morning Message,” which discussed the many ways Native Americans traditionally give thanks. After singing a “traveling song,” the grade-level then learned about some familiar games that are rooted in Native American culture, including lacrosse and archery, and had the chance to participate in several of the activities.

Discussing The Dangers

Rocky Point High School juniors and seniors had an eye-opening look at the impact that distracted driving can have on a family when guest speaker Karen Torres spoke with them about the tragic loss of her father. Noting that 80 percent of all crashes involve some type of distraction and how an average text message can take a person’s eyes off the road for five seconds, Ms. Torres spoke candidly with the students about what they can do to stop the epidemic that is causing the fatalities of more than 3,000 teenagers each year. “Now, in your first years of driving, is the time when you are going to pick up your good and bad

habits,” said Ms. Torres. “It is important to remember that there is a right time and a wrong time to use your phones. These little devices have made life so easy for us, but many have forgotten that what we are to do behind the wheel is drive – not tweet, Facebook, upload pictures or text.” During the program, the students learned about the stiff legal consequences associated with texting and driving as well as participated in two brainteasers aimed at demonstrating first-hand how hard it is to complete two tasks at once. They also had the chance to watch the public service announcements that

Ms. Torres’ family and her father’s colleagues created, as well as part of a documentary about four tragedies caused by texting and driving. At the end of the program, Ms. Torres reminded the students that the choice is theirs and that they should never let another person’s choice to engage in such behavior interfere with their lives. To symbolize their commitment to spread the word about the dangers of texting and driving and to refrain from such actions, many of the students signed a commitment pledge. The banner will be placed on display in the main lobby to serve as a daily reminder for the entire student body.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) SkillsUSA students put “fun” back into fundraising at their Flapjack Fundraiser. The event was held at Applebee’s in Patchogue. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps keep students on the path to high school graduation and successful futures. On a recent Sunday, the students welcomed people to Applebee’s, directed them to tables, and for a donation of $10 were served

Flapjack Fundraiser pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, and a beverage. The students from BTC have something to flap about because they raised $1,070 at the Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser. Service is a key component to SkillsUSA. Doing things for others is the basis of many occupations. Students make a pledge when they join SkillsUSA; to uphold a set of ideals that include service to the community and their school, being a person of character, and taking pride in making things happen.

Out of the more than 2,000 entries submitted nationwide, Ward Melville High School yearbook students earned 16 writeoff placements at the Journalism Education Association Write-offs Competition at the National High School Journalism Convention in Boston. Not only was the school highly successful in this competition, but it was also the only school from New York State to place in the contest. The Write-offs are a competition hosted by the Journalism Education Association at its fall and spring high school journalism conventions. There are a number of categories in which students are able to compete while at the convention. Categories range from journalism writing and graphic design to photography and broadcast.
