The students are members of the district’s Interact Club, Leo Club and LISEC Environmental Club, led by advisers Brian Chalmers, Deirdre Filippi, Mary LaSita and Jonathan Maletta. “We collected a broad range of trash, including fishing nets, plastic straws, lighters,

cups, Styrofoam, etc.,” Maletta said. “Anthropogenic pollution is a serious concern for marine life on all trophic levels. Of particular concern is the microplastics that are ingested lower

in the food chain and become progressively concentrated through bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Consequently, the apex predators (seafood) that we consume, including local fluke,

striped bass and sea bass, may contain a higher concentration of microplastics with potential toxins. We all need to be stewards of our unique coastal resources.”

Sparkling Wines Sparkling wines can make special occasions even more enjoyable. That is why they’re generally reserved for big events that warrant toasts, like weddings or New Year’s Eve celebrations, but bubbly can be enjoyed at any time of year. Many people mistakenly believe that all sparkling wines are champagne, so much so that the term champagne has become something of an umbrella term. However, true champagne is made in the Champagne region of France from a combination of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier grapes. It can only be made in the region’s traditional method, called Méthode Champenoise, and the taste will typically be nutty and toasty.

Sparkling wines can be produced across the globe in various ways. The taste will vary depending on how it is produced. Sparkling wines are named depending on where they are made. Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine, cava a Spanish variety and sekt is a German version.

A Virtual Visit With Military Personnel First graders at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School had a real-time social studies lesson when they met virtually with military personnel and local government officials to share their appreciation for those who protect the country. U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Bellomy, a preventive medicine technician, and two of his colleagues; Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone; Suffolk County Director of Community Affairs Melanie Sinesi; Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army Steven Castleton and Erica Gronenthal, mother to first grader Finn Gronenthal, virtually visited the classroom decorated for the occasion. The students wore paper hats saying “Thank you, veterans” and, along with teachers

Sandra Eybs, Meagan Bellantuono and Allison Coppi, wore patriotic colors. The visit stems from a keychain project that Finn and his classmates created in Coppi’s kindergarten class last year. Finn’s father passed away while serving the country when Finn was a baby. Petty Officer 2nd Class Bellomy is a military mentor to Finn and his older brother Kai. Students asked well-thought-out questions including how veterans are honored in the county and the best and worst parts of the careers of those on the virtual conference. Finn was honored to hear Bellone and Castleton call his father a hero because of the extraordinary sacrifices that he made. Both men thanked the students for their cards of appreciation and support.

Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Annual School Project Raises $965

Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students showcased their creativity with their inventive baby scarecrows and raised $965 for the Rocky Point Teachers’ Association Kids in Need Fund. Organized by fourth grade teacher Allison Licata, with participation

from all fourth grade classes, each student constructed individual scarecrows complete with colorful decorations and embellishments. The finished works of art were then set out on display in the hall outside the classrooms. Students and staff were invited to visit the scarecrow patch and

vote for their favorite one by donating coins. The long-standing tradition at JAE has raised thousands of dollars for Kids in Need and has been taking place for more than two decades. It was first introduced by former teacher Sandy Finn Grunner.

An Intimate Celebration of House Tours Past As the year 2020 has been different on so many levels our time honored tradition of the Candlelight House Tour will be different too. Due to COVID 19, CDC regulations, and the health and well-being of our community, volunteers, restauranteurs, decorators and homeowners we are unable to present our traditional Candlelight

With coaches, parents, siblings and administrators in attendance at a socially distant ceremony, three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors were honored at the 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association signing event. Each student committed to playing their respective sports at several of the nation’s most prestigious Division I and Division II universities in the fall. Heidi Biedenkapp will

join the rowing team at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Katelynn Johnston will play lacrosse at Assumption University and Daniel Koban will play lacrosse at St. John’s University. The event was hosted by the Port Jefferson Athletic Department and introduced by Adam Sherrard, director of health, physical education and athletics. During the ceremony, each student was lauded by

their coaches James Finke (rowing), Logan Hoffman (girls lacrosse), and Taylor Forstell and John Maletta (boys lacrosse). The coaches spoke of each student’s high school career highlights and wished them all well at the next level of their education and athletic endeavors. The Port Jefferson School District congratulates these students who will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Students Fill Baskets And Boxes Of Food For Local Families

Edna Louise Spear Elementary School held its annual food drive and filled boxes with nonperishable foods as well as toiletries for local families in need. Under the leadership of elementary guidance counselor Jessica Peterson, the school community once again showed its generosity in aiding others with dozens of boxes of food collected that will help families enjoy a nutritious Thanksgiving meal. Eight second grade students – Jessica Curley, Thomas Donohue, Brier Fox, Ruby Minatta, Lucas Peterson, Vincent Pryor, Andrew Weinisch and Madeline Zoudov – used their organizational skills and sheer desire to help families in the community

by sorting boxes of items for each family. At Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, a “StuffA-Locker” initiative was launched and has faculty, staff, administration, art students and all the high school clubs involved in working to fill the unused first floor lockers with nonperishable food and monetary donations. “It is important for students, staff and the community to recognize the importance and need for staying connected during this time,” Principal Eric Haruthunian said. “Our high school is unifying our food drive efforts in order to help the community.” Once a certain number of lockers are filled, the

food in them is delivered and student-artists create a mural to cover those lockers. The final art piece will be revealed in full once all of the lockers are stuffed. The International Club helped kick off the campaign by collecting dozens of non-perishable foods, stuffing and bread mixes, vegetables, juices and frozen turkeys that filled up the first five lockers. Club advisers Jennifer Walling, who teaches English as a second language, and social worker Kristin Britt delivered the bountiful baskets to local families just in time for a nutritious Thanksgiving holiday meal.

average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as

low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.

Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year

The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. The entire project sprang

quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and

Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including: “I have 6 kids and no tree…we would like it if it’s still available.” “If this tree is still available, I sure could use it. My kids are 6 and 9. We won’t have a lot under it this year but there will be something there.” “My husband broke his leg 5 weeks ago and we are really struggling. We need a tree desperately.” “It will be my daughter’s first Christmas and we just don’t have the $$ for a tree.” “I have a boys group home that really can use it..........Let me know.” This year, the requests are just as numerous, and heartfelt. This story is not really even about Christmas trees. It’s about an amazing effort that started with a chain of small acts of kindness and blossomed into a citywide effort to help people in need have a better Christmas.
