Drops of Relief Although not yet old enough to donate, Minnesauke Elementary School sixth-grade students worked to save the lives of many individuals by coordinating a highly successful blood drive this November. Prior to the event, the

students were visited by a member of the New York Blood Center to learn about the importance of blood donations, what blood is made of and how the donations will benefit individuals. During the drive, volunteer sixthgraders acted as Little

Doctors, wearing lab jackets and assisting volunteers with paperwork and providing muchneeded post donation snacks. A total of 60 individuals registered for the blood drive and 42 pints were collected.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Parris Garant recently performed in the 2015 Suffolk County Music Educator’s Association All-County Music Festival (NYSCAME), held on November 19th, 20th and 21st.

Garant was selected along with others from across Suffolk County as a result of a competitive application process, which included a review of the students’ NYSSMA scores and teacher recommendations. Garant, who was thrilled

with the opportunity, also sings with the school’s choir and chamber choir. She was also recently named as a scholar-artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance for her vocal talents.

Reason for the Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season

– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

Season for Giving Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School second-grade service club collected hundreds of non-perishable food items for local families in need during a weeklong drive. Leading up to the

initiative, the club discussed the importance of assisting others and the big changes that they can make even at such a young age. “It makes me feel good because I know the

donations are going to help families who don’t have enough food,” said Kyle Contri. The donations were sorted and boxed by the club before be donated to several look food pantries.

Polar Plunge On November 21st, the Town of Brookhaven and the Special Olympics of New York hosted the sixth annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for a Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Nearly 900 plungers,

including Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Councilman Kevin LaValle and Councilman Neil Foley, along with other Town employees, braved the ice-cold water of the Long Island Sound to collectively raise over $155,000 for the

Special Olympics. For the second year in a row, the team that raised the most money was the “Petro Polar Plungers,” who collected more than $8,600.

Three Village Gives Thanks Students throughout the Three Village Central School District marked the Thanksgiving holiday through interactive and festive celebrations. As a culmination to their classroom studies, Minnesauke Elementary School first-graders in Jennifer Lazarou’s kindergarten class enjoyed a feast with their classmates and families. Those in attendance shared what they are thankful for this holiday and sang a holidayinspired song. Leading up to the event, the students fashioned Native American and Pilgrim hats, created

writing pieces on what the Native Americans taught them and artistic drawings using turkeys. First-grade students at W.S. Mount Elementary School showcased their newfound knowledge of the Thanksgiving holiday during skits and concluded with a classroom feast. Songs varied by class and included such pieces as the ABCs of Thanksgiving and Albuquerque Turkey. Minnesauke Elementary School fourth-graders in Kara Gorski’s class celebrated Thanksgiving by making a “Thanksgiving Blessing Mix,” which will

be donated to the R.C. Saint James Church Soup Kitchen. The special treats included a personal note from each student and will be distributed at the soup kitchen’s Thanksgiving dinner. Nassakeag Elementary School coordinated a Touchdown Tuesday Food Drive for local food pantries. The school collected hundreds of nonperishable food items and each student who donated received a certificate and voucher for the free ticket into the Stony Brook University Seawolves game on the November 21st.

The Suffolk Community College Foundation has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kickoff the holiday giving season. #GivingTuesday is December 1st, this year. Grand Prize Winner Ridge Elementary student Daniella Lyn Bolettieri has been named a Grand Prize winner of a national recycling contest, PETE’s Bathroom Bin Challenge. In celebration of America Recycles Day on November 15th, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc.’s Care to Recycle program and Scholastic conducted a nationwide contest to teach students the importance of recycling throughout

the house, including the bathroom. The contest required students (grades 1–3) to submit a short essay and drawing that shared why recycling personal-care products, such as shampoo and lotion bottles, found in the bathroom is important, and how they will encourage their family to recycle more of these products. As one of ten winners across the country,

Daniella-Lyn will receive a bike, helmet and a National Park Pass. “I wanted to make sure my family was recycling, even in the bathroom,” said Daniella. “Recycling is really important to keep our planet clean.” Launched in 2013, the Care to Recycle program serves as a gentle reminder to encourage more recycling throughout the house, especially in the bathroom.

On November 21st, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Nicolas and Patrick Grosskopf of Boy Scout Troop 221 in Manorville who both attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. Nicolas and Patrick’s Eagle Service project was

to restore the Manorville Soccer Club’s snack and storage shed at the Dayton Avenue School. The shack was badly vandalized, boarded up and in uninhabitable condition. The scouts restored it and made it useable by the soccer club and it has been getting rave review from the community. To become an Eagle

Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. Since the first Eagle Scout Award was presented in 1912, no more than 4 percent of all Scouts have attained the Eagle Scout rank.

State Soccer Champions For the first time in school history, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s varsity girls’ soccer team captured the New York State Class C championship title after

defeating Elmira Notre Dame 3-1 on November 15th. “Our goal from the beginning of the season was to bring home the state title after losing in

Leading Educator P.J. Gelinas Junior High School teacher and science chairperson Gary Vorwald has received the first-ever Distinguished Earth Science Teacher Award from the New York Earth Science Teacher’s Association. The award is given to honor an active Earth Science teacher in a public or private school in New York. Candidates were evaluated on profile information submitted, their outstanding results with their students, participation and leadership in professional organizations as well as their commitment to Earth Science teachings. Mr. Vorwald has taught in the district since 1998

and has been an educator for 29 years. During his time in Three Village, he has taught nearly every science course offered at P.J. Gelinas, and is the school’s current department chairperson and lead coach of its awardwinning Science Olympiad team. He is also active in numerous professional organizations and is a leader in the Science Teachers Association of New York State, where he has held offices such as Suffolk Section President, Subject Area Representative for Earth Science and Conference Chairperson. He is also a member of NSTA, NESTA, NYESTA, NAGT and the

Long Island Science Congress. He presents at the annual coaches clinic and is the event writer and supervisor for the Rocks & Minerals and Fossil events. Mr. Vorwald’s list of awards is extensive. He was awarded the Outstanding Earth Science teacher of New York State award by the NAGT in 1997. Suffolk STANYS presented him with their service award in 2005. He was honored by the Harvard Club of Long Island as a Distinguished Teacher in 2011 and received the STANYS Excellence in Teaching Award for intermediate level science teaching in 2012. Earlier this calendar year he was named a New York State Master Teacher.

One of the Brightest

The John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth has named Lucas Rohman, a Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-grader as one of the brightest middle school students in the World.

Rohman was named based on his exceptional performance as a middle school student on the college SAT and ACT. He is one of 1,175 students, who were recognized out of over 30,648 students who

participated in the 20142015 CTY Talent Search. As one of John Hopkins’ Brightest in the World awardees, Rohman qualified to attend a CTY residential summer program, online classes and several family programs. Rohman, who is a member of his school’s National Junior Honor Society and Science Olympiad Team, said he was honored to be named. “It has opened up a lot of opportunities to further my studies,” he said.
