With the help of their class moms, the students stirred together batter for homemade pumpkin bread and filled more than 50 bread tins with the mixture.

My Buddy Buddy the Betta first entered my life on February 16th, 2015 as a “half-birthday” present to myself, with fingers crossed that this particular foray into the world of pet ownership would fare better than, say, the two carnival goldfish I had adopted the year prior. Little did I know that this little guy – my beautiful, turquoise, delta-finned Buddy – would become exactly that… a friend, a companion, an adopted member of the family, over the next 21 months. Through nearly two years of my life, from holiday gatherings to cozy weekends spent at home, just the two of us, Buddy was a constant. I’m not sure at what point I began to view him as so much more than a pet; but that he was. They say all animals have distinct personalities and characteristics, and Buddy was certainly no exception. Day after day, our routine became such that I swore he recognized me, greeted me, anxiously awaited my arrival home from work. Meal times were met with exuberant fin-waving and flitting to and fro, and the

occasional “betta kisses” on the tip of my finger should I venture too close to the water. Bath times resulted in sulking in the corner, burrowing behind his favorite plant and being downright obstinate when it came time to transfer from his larger, luxurious suite of a tank to his tiny “starter” bowl. Those I told about Buddy initially reacted with skepticism that a mere fish could actually possess almost humanlike qualities. That was, until they met him. It was impossible not to be charmed by this tiny fish with the big fins and the even bigger personality. And boy did he love the attention! It was about six months in that I worked Buddy into my “In Step” column as a “guest columnist,” taking on the role of my spokesfish and taking over the masthead with his “In Swim” moniker. The tremendous feedback I received from readers, the majority of whom were complete strangers, was overwhelming, with some even suggesting the makings of a future children’s book series.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Milestones came and went, from his widely celebrated 1st Betta Birthday, to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, summer barbeques and everything in between, with Buddy often joining my company in his tiny bowl on the dining room table or setting up shop on the coffee table in front of the television. A better life could not a betta have. Sadly, my little Buddy passed on to fishy heaven just last week. He was a fighter up until the very end, and it was truly devastating to see him go. All pets are irreplaceable, to be sure; but my Buddy holds an extremely special place in my heart, and always will. Thank you to everyone who frequently wrote in to inquire about his wellbeing and for all the support of his guest columns. In this way, he has become somewhat immortalized in print. Life won’t be the same without ya Buddy. Forever my little ﬁnned friend… Love, your Human

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook was awarded the 2016 SmartCEO Magazine’s Corporate Culture Award recently. The Corporate Culture Awards program honors companies that foster a creative, collaborative workplace culture to enhance performance and sustain a competitive advantage. The success of our corporate culture comes when we engage new and existing audiences in new ways.” Long Island Museum was one of 38 companies honored at the first Long Island Corporate Culture Awards ceremonies at Chateau Briand in Carle Place. Executive Director Neil Watson, along with five staff members attended the event, participating in games, contests and activities created to encourage networking in a casual, fun environment. Soccer Champions For the second year in a row, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School girls’ varsity soccer team in the Port Jefferson School District claimed the New York State Class C championship title. The team secured the win by defeating Geneseo

with a final score of 4-1 during playoffs, held in Cortland on November 13th. “This is truly a special group of girls,” explained Athletic Director Danielle Turner. “They are a team in every sense of the word. There is no other

group more deserving of a state championship. I am so proud of them, our coaches and the entire Port Jefferson Community.” The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff.

RAISING DONATIONS - The Town of Brookhaven’s volunteer Youth Board recently held two successful flapjack fundraisers at Applebee’s, raising $500 for the Brookhaven Youth Bureau Thanksgiving Food Drive and INTERFACE Toy Drive.

POLAR PLUNGE RAISES FUNDS - On November 20th, the Town of Brookhaven and the Special Olympics of New York hosted the seventh annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for a Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. More than 700 plungers, including Councilwoman Jane Bonner, Councilman Kevin LaValle and many Town employees, braved the ice-cold water of the Long Island Sound to collectively raise over $140,000 for the Special Olympics.

A group of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School peer leaders attended an inaugural Peer Education Leadership Summit along with 70 of their peers from across Suffolk County on November 16th at the Port Jefferson Community Center. During the summit, which was sponsored by the Neighborhood House and the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying, the trained peer leaders participated in a variety of activities that prepare

them to use their positive influence to promote anti-bullying and suicide prevention within their respective schools. Activities the 16 Port Jefferson students took part in included group improve and discussions on how to handle conversations related to suicide and bullying. Students also heard from speakers, including Joe Salamone of the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying, Michelle Virga of the Neighborhood House,

and Laura Campbell, of the Crisis Center of Long Island. “These awesome young people shared their time, compassion and courage so that they can bring incredibly important messages back to their schools and communities,” said Kristin Britt, summit organizer and a social worker with the Port Jefferson School District. Also attending the summit with the students were teachers Dinarae Camarade and Jesse Rosen.

Taking a Step R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninth-grade students in the Three Village Central School District recently learned about a wide range of professions during the schools’ annual career day program. Set up in the school’s gymnasium, the program afforded students the opportunity to speak with

professionals in a one-onone setting. The presenters encompassed a wide range of fields, including engineering, counseling, finance, law enforcement and several medical professions. Technology integrated careers played a large role in this year’s event, a concept that seemed particularly interesting to students.

As the students are technically beginning their first year of high school, the school’s annual fair aims to spark an interest in the type of career path they might want to pursue in the future so they can properly select related elective courses in high school.

a snack drive. The initiative, which was coordinated by the school’s Holiday Help Committee, ran for a week and a half in November. Throughout that time, individuals donated their favorite snack items and worked to fill a large wheeled bin to

the brim. At the end of the drive, the school’s Second-Grade Service Squad helped to sort the donations into food categories and prepared them to be distributed among local families in need of assistance.

Maya and Sophia not only coordinated the drive, but also collected all of the donations from throughout the building during their lunch periods. The donations will be delivered to the food banks at St. Louis de Montfort Church and St. Anthony’s Church.

Members of the E.W. Howell Construction Group, along with a team of supporters from subcontractors Adjo Contracting Corp., ALC Steel, Bana Electric, and Evolution Pipe, as well as the Long Island chapter of the Harley Owners Group (LI H.O.G.), raised more than $4,000 for the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. The LI H.O.G chapter donated $2,000 to the total

amount raised. With this money, the team was able to present the veterans with gift certificates to local restaurants, movie theaters, and supermarkets, as well as basic need items including hats and blankets. “It was a touching moment when we presented the veterans with the gifts, they were very appreciative,” said Harry Hansen, a VP at E.W. Howell and member of the LI H.O.G. chapter.

As an extension of their social studies curriculum and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, kindergarten students at Arrowhead Elementary School in the Three Village School District recently had the chance to experience the holiday in a hands-on way. During the grade-level’s

annual Thanksgiving Adventure, the students learned about the first Thanksgiving, the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock. Using their creativity, they made macaroni necklaces, turkey napkin holders, Native American headdresses and Pilgrim hats. They also learned how to tell a story using

Native American symbols, pretended to plant corn in small cups and shared stories in a teepee. After arriving at the event on the “Mayflower,” each student took a turn signing a “Friendship Promise.” The adventure culminated in a Thanksgiving feast for all the classes.

Thanksgiving Treats Minnesauke Elementary School second-graders in Michael Licausi’s class and Brian Harvey’s sixth-grade class recently used their math and culinary skills to create tasty Thanksgiving treats for the residents living at Echo Arms Adult Home in Port Jefferson Station.

With the help of their class moms, the students stirred together batter for homemade pumpkin bread and filled more than 50 bread tins with the mixture. As a result of the class’ effort, the students were able to create enough loaves to ensure that each resident would receive

their own tasty care package. In addition, to further ensure the holiday was a festive one at the facility, the sixth-graders also made large decorative “Happy Thanksgiving” signs and colorful placemats.

To make the holiday season bright for those in need, the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School guidance office in Port Jefferson School District has kicked off an annual Holiday Help program. Through December 16th,

students and their families are donating wrapped items that are needed by local families. Prior to the start of the initiative, requested wish items were written on mittens that adorn the school’s holiday tree in the main lobby.
