The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org

Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.

So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Please email licvolunteer@ licares.org for more information. Additionally, food donations are always welcome. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Let us all join together this holiday season to lift each other up, unite despite our differences and help those in need.

In an effort organized by Rocky Point High School social studies teacher Rich Acritelli, 50 additional names will be added to the Rocky Point High School’s Veterans Wall of Honor. Acritelli sold more than 160 T-shirts to raise funds for the additional names of staff and students who have served in the country’s Armed Forces. The names will be unveiled at the school’s Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 15 where members of the VFW and other honored guests will be in attendance.

There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even

permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

Students from P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District explored the tidal wetlands of Flax Pond and surrounding shoreline during a field trip offered in the science research course. Tidal wetlands are important ecosystems which serve to buffer the impact of storms on the coastline and help to filter harmful pollutants. During the trip in Ken Weiner’s

Science Research II course, students used a peat auger to core through the salt marsh to discover various layers. This enabled them to determine the rate of wetland growth that has occupied the area for the past 2,000 years. As part of their research, the students discovered firsthand how the different types of wetland vegetation is linked to elevation above sea-level as well as other environmental changes

that have occurred to this area. Some students operated a seine net, allowing the class to identify different aquatic species and trends in population. This trip is part of a series in which students in the science research courses at Three Village will increase their knowledge understanding of the local environment through hands-on activities.

The color orange, kind sayings and collaborative initiatives blanketed the Three Village Central School District as students and staff came together to celebrate this year’s Unity Week at the end of October. At Nassakeag, students celebrated with different theme days, including Start with Hello inspired by the Sandy Hook Promise, favorite T-shirt and nobody plays alone. On Unity Day, all were encouraged to wear orange – the national color of unity – and perform Random Acts of Kindness throughout the day. Two banners were

set up in the building for the students to document and give shout-outs to someone who completed a RAK for them on this day. Post-its were placed on one of the banners throughout the day for everyone to see. W.S. Mount Elementary School created a tree to display how “unbeleafably” kind the building’s students and staff are on a regular basis. Paper leaves were inscribed with words of wisdom and ways that each can work to make the school, community and world more united. The goal of Unity Week was to “bring

“Raising Hope for NY Cancer Patients” The non-profit New York Cancer Foundation recently honored CoFounder & CEO of Flatiron Health Nat Turner for his organization’s efforts to improve the lives of cancer patients during the inaugural Raising Hope Gala on Long Island. This newly established gala seeks to raise funds for cancer patients experiencing extreme financial stresses. The

A Port Jefferson veterans’ memorial updated to recognize the sacrifices made by the latest generations of American service members was unveiled during a Veterans Day commemoration ceremony hosted by the American Legion Wilson Rich Post No. 432. The unveiling completes renovations for the third of four memorial sites located in Port Jefferson, Setauket and Stony Brook identified for upgrades in

order to honor those who served during the Cold War, Granada/Lebanon and Panama, the Gulf Wars and in the Global War on Terror. The idea to renovate the memorials, many of which had not been changed in decades, was suggested to Legislator Hahn by veteran Jack Gozdziewski, a member of American Legion Post 432 and VFW Post 3054 during the Memorial Day ceremonies in 2018. Legislator Hahn

then met with Gozdziewski and local post commanders to tour all the memorials and began planning the project together. According to Bill Wolf, Commander of the American Legion Wilson Ritch Post 432 in Port Jefferson, “The mission to update these monuments is overdue, but with the continued support and generosity of our neighbors, this mission will be completed this spring, giving all of our
