Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you. Happy Shopping!

On Monday, November 10th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the annual Veteran’s Day Assembly at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point. During the assembly, veterans were honored with familiar and patriotic songs, praise and gratitude.

Kindness & Compassion Ward Melville High School students, faculty and staff came together to foster a culture of kindness during a day centered on compassion, acceptance and awareness – an event they called Patriot PRIDE (Peace, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, Encouragement) Day. Keeping in line with the school’s PBIS program and New York State Dignity for All Students Act regulations, the

program offered students many outlets for hearing and experiencing the countless ways that they can help create a culture of kindness. The event began with keynote speaker Shadrack Boakye, who focused on the struggle of humanity and spoke about his personal experiences. Students then had the chance to attend some 30 different thematic workshops with a variety of professionals.

Presenters discussed such topics as the holocaust, how to prevent harassment in college sports, tips for overcoming anxiety and stress and animal cruelty. Hands-on workshops afforded students the chance to learn about the impact of a group by playing hand-held African drums and fashioning 1,000 paper cranes as a symbol of peace.

Best They Can Bee Five Edna Louise Spear Elementary school students have advanced in the first round of the National History Bee competition, which they participated in on November 12th. “The history bee is an academic competition for students that tests knowledge in a wide rage

of historical topics,” said Janelle Bellotti, a Studies Enriching Academic Learning teacher for the Port Jefferson School District. The fourth- and fifthgrade students, who qualified based on the results of a 50-question written multiple-choice test, will now have the

opportunity to take an online regional qualifying exam on Jan. 9. If they score within the top 120, they will advance to the regional finals, which will be held in April. Congratulations to the following students: Alex Carlson, Matthew Murphy, Andrew Patterson, Haruki Takeuchi and Sophia Viens.

On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The event was presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Half Hollow Hills School District. High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The robots battled on a 27-by-54foot playing field with a

truss suspended just over five feet above the ﬂoor, attempting to earn points by trying to shoot as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-halfminute match. The winning alliance comprised of Malverne High School FIRST Team #884 “Mechanical Mules”; Patchogue-Medford High School FIRST Team #329 “Raiders”; and Huntington High School FIRST Team #5016 “Huntington Robotics.” The finalists were Hicksville High School FIRST Team #1468 “J-Birds”; Center Moriches High School FIRST Team #4458 “Infernobotix”; and Bay Shore High

Winners Announced School FIRST Team #271 “Mechanical Marauders.” The purpose of this postseason event was to show visiting schools, teachers, and administrators how students are garnering an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and why robotics programs are vital to their schools’ curriculum. Some of the school officials even had the opportunity to operate their teams’ robots during one of the day’s matches.
