Giving Thanks To Veterans Nassakeag Elementary School fifth graders helped to send well-wishes and thanks to the nation’s veterans by creating handwritten cards and letters. The classes brainstormed ways to say
thanks to those who have served the country. The completed cards will be sent to Georgia and then distributed to troops in various areas of the world who won’t make it home before the holidays. “It gives us pleasure
to spread positivity and gratitude to our troops, especially this time of year,” said teacher Darlene Lange, who helps to coordinate the project each year.
Setauket Students Give Back Setauket Elementary School fifth graders Gabi Del Carpio, Avery Lasner, Leila Panesar and Elle Wright recently teamed up to help make a difference for those in need of help
and support during these unprecedented times. Together, the group created hand-made inspirational cards, bracelets and stickers to sell on Election Day.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, the students raised nearly $500 to support the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

A veteran must be 100% service-disabled to qualify for dental care from the Veterans Administration.” This year’s November 4th event provided service members numerous muchneeded dental procedures, including exams, oral cancer screenings, cleanings, extractions and fillings. Also, free flu shots were provided. Beginning in 2021, the Give Veterans a Smile Day will be held twice a year

The event provides men and women who have served our country in the armed forces with quality dental care free of charge. This year’s event was dedicated to Mark Cherches, DDS, who passed away on September 18th. A military veteran, Dr. Cherches served as director of the St. Charles Dental Residency Program for 40 years and was instrumental in founding Give Veterans a Smile Day. “It is humbling and very uplifting to help these

How To Hit The Open Road During A Pandemic
Fall has traditionally been a great time of year to hit the open road. Fall foliage annually provides an idyllic backdrop for fall road trips, but 2020 is a year unlike any other, and veteran road trippers may wonder if it’s wise, or even legal, to take to the open road this fall. The COVID-19 virus has forced local governments to implement various changes aimed at preventing the spread of the potentially deadly virus. While interstate travel during the outbreak is different, it’s not illegal. However, many states put specific policies in place that mandated out-of-state visitors self-quarantine for a certain period time, most often 14 days. Such measures compelled many would-be travelers to remain within the borders of their home states. Traveling need not be a relic of the past because of a pandemic. In fact, travel enthusiasts can hit the open road this fall with their peace of mind intact, especially if they follow a few safety precautions while heading off for parts unknown. · Determine how far you really need to go. Restrictions have been lifted in many areas, but it’s still most convenient
for drivers to stay somewhat close to home, ideally within their own states. That makes it easy for them to buy food, gas, use a restroom, or visit a park or monument without violating the spirit of quarantine mandates. A trip need not cross borders to be fun. · Plan for fewer pitstops. The fewer stops drivers make on their trips, the lower their risk of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus. In lieu of dining out during your trip, pack your lunch at home and take it with you. In addition, fill up your car before embarking on your trip so you don’t have to visit the filling station while on the road. Bring enough water and snacks so you can stay hydrated and don’t become hungry while out and about. · Get a tuneup before your trip. No one wants to confront car trouble during a road trip, and that’s especially so when traveling during a pandemic. A breakdown during a pandemic may force drivers to visit roadside body shops or arrange for tow trucks, potentially putting them at greater risk of getting COVID-19. Drivers should
take their cars in for a tuneup before taking a road trip to lower that risk. · Avoid densely populated areas if you intend to get out of your vehicle. If you intend to get out of your vehicle during a road trip, avoid visiting areas that tend to draw large crowds. Popular lookout points may provide some beautiful fall views, but such points also draw crowds that may exceed the limits on group gatherings recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health agencies. It’s possible to travel during a pandemic. But drivers must take extra precautions to reduce their risk of being exposed to potentially deadly viruses like COVID-19.

Preservation Long Island Announces Call for 2021 Endangered Historic Places Nominations
Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

Photo by Dylan Wallace ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

Rona had put up a great fight. Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death. Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her. Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers. “We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it. We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.” Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old. They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care. That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her. Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. Once she overcame being sick, she decided to name her Rona, which was after the coronavirus, because she felt that the virus is tough to fight, and

The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon Rescheduled

The Andrew McMorris Memorial Walkathon will be held on Friday, November 27th after being cancelled due to the initial outbreak of the Corona Virus. The scenic trail walk will be through the beautiful and picturesque Baiting Hollow Scout Camp located at 1774 Sound Avenue, Calverton, NY and will include a tour of the beautiful McMorris Lodge being built at the Camp. Registrations and sponsorship information is available at: https://www. sccbsa.org/walk2020. The McMorris Family, along with the Suffolk County Council of the Boy Scouts of America are hosting this Walkathon to raise the funds needed to complete the McMorris
Lodge, which is under construction at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in memory of Andrew Mc Morris. Andrew is the Boy Scout, who was killed by a drunk driver, while hiking the Greenbelt Trail with his Boy Scout Troop 161 in September 2018. Several other Scouts were severely injured as a result of this tragic crash. The lives of his family, friends, community and fellow scouters were forever changed by Andrew’s loss. All walkers will enjoy a complementary grab and go lunch at the conclusion of the Walkathon which is being donated by Applebee’s. North Fork Trolley will be providing complementary shuttle service for all participants
to and from the parking area for the event. An Intimate Celebration of House Tours Past As the year 2020 has been different on so many levels our time honored tradition of the Candlelight House Tour will be different too. Due to COVID 19, CDC regulations, and the health and well-being of our community, volunteers, restauranteurs, decorators and homeowners we are unable to present our traditional Candlelight House Tour.
Traditionally, our tour is held the first weekend in December and kicks off the Holiday Season in our area. This year, Friday, December 4th and Saturday, December 5th, we will be offering tickets to An Intimate Celebration of House Tours Past at the Old Field Club. There will be 2 seatings for dinner from 5 pm - 7 pm and 8 pm - 10 pm on Friday,
December 4th. Tickets are $100 per person and there is a limit of 2 tickets per order. There will be 1 seating for breakfast from 9 am - 11 am on Saturday, December 5th. Tickets are $40 per person and there is a limit of 2 tickets per order. To order tickets or for more information, visit TVHS.org.
All Kids Fair Was Virtual – And Is Now Available For Free The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8, was virtual! This expo could not take place in its usual month due to COVID-19, but those who attended had a terrific time. This year’s All Kids Fair had a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes were: Disney Singalong, Soccer, two Floral Arranging classes, and Family Yoga. For the adults, there were classes on Essential Oils, Fidelis Care Information, and Pampering Pitstop. The platform that the event took place on will store the information for the next 27 days, so all are welcome to visit the platform and learn about the 35 exhibitors and their offerings and enjoy over half of the classes, available on the site until December 8. Since families always enjoy our in-person petting zoo, this year there were virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey were the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” were highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event were “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant,
toddler, elementary age, middle school age, high school age, special needs, or gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time was right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It was definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It was a fullfledged virtual expo. We incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our “virtual live animal visits” and “coffee talks.” Families had a great time learning at our many classes about services and products available to them.” Repeat attendee David Rosenthal of Oceanside raved about the event. “My girls had a blast! The younger one loved looking at the animals [in the virtual petting zoo], and my older one liked Captain America and the ballet class. They asked if there will be another All Kids Fair next month!” There were several non-Long Island based businesses this year who enjoyed the opportunity to make their services available to Long Islanders virtually. Magician Dennis Kyriakos of California hosted a fun performance. Annaline Dinkelmann of Teach Me Wall Street, a New York City-based business, was a newcomer this year. She shared that “the All Kids Fair made it easy for the parents because we have the Christmas holidays coming up. Families were able to
learn about things to do; it opened their eyes. I was very pleased with the event.” The All Kids Fair, as always, had many diverse exhibitors including party entertainment, tutoring, activities, health/wellness products and services, nonprofits, travel, and even a Girl Scout troop. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,
but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation
