The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than onethird of the total number of students selected for All State. Approximately nine hundred (900) students

from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Ward Melville High School students and staff continued their mission of creating a culture filled with compassion, acceptance and awareness as they celebrated Patriot PRIDE (Peace, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, Encouragement) Day this November. This year’s program centered on the words and story of Rohan Murphy, an inspirational speaker

who promotes the message of living a “no excuses” life. Mr. Murphy, who had lost his legs at a young age, spoke about how he worked to overcome life’s obstacles and physical challenges in order to achieve his personal standards for success. He told the students how he pushed himself to achieve both academically and athletically – as he went on to attend and become a

Division I college wrestler at Penn State University. To continue to message of the day, several school clubs organized informational booth in the Commons area. Raising Money for Cancer The Port Jefferson School Board honored six Port Jefferson Middle School students on November 10th for a fundraiser they held for the American Childhood Cancer Society. The students were specifically recognized for organizing an afterschool

bake sale with the assistance of their teacher Deirdre Filippi. Through the sale, the students raised $225 for the organization. “We are very proud of these students who are upholding the ideals of the Port Jefferson School District, including responsibility to self, family

and community,” said Middle School Principal Dr. Robert Neidig. The Port Jefferson School District extends its congratulations to Nicole Schully, Charlotte Ambrozy, Sarah Mishe, Abigail Muffly, Meghan Penske and Jacqueline Poten.

Enriched Math Five Three Village Central School District junior high school students - Daniel Schwartz, Neil Shady, William Sun, Benjamin Templeton and Rebecca Zhang - have been named Long Island Young Scholars of Mathematics by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at The College at Old Westbury. The honor acknowledges

that these students are in the top one-tenth of 1 percent of all local math students in their grade. As Scholars, they will now have the chance to spend 60 hours in math classes over the span of 20 Saturdays. The program’s curriculum covers mathematical topics in algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory. Topics not included in the standard course of

study, such as problemsolving applied to probability, drawings of ocean bottom profiles, the theory of finite differences, topics in science and mass point geometry, will also be presented. More than 600 students from school districts on Long Island were nominated for this honor and only 84 were accepted.

An Ode to My Human By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated. Nine months and still going strong! Guess I should start working on my Christmas list… maybe a larger bowl, a small castle, some fun foliage to frolic in, a leafy hammock to sleep in… Is anyone writing this stuff down? Oh, and maybe a small finned friend to play with? As long as they’re not too fancy and colorful, that is… we can’t have any other creatures stealing too much of my Human’s attention. ‘Til next time, Happy Thanksgiving to all the humans out there. Student Spotlight TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people

started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

Support service providers and John Venza, vice president of adolescent services, OUTREACH, spoke about the resources they offer to those battling addiction as well as the rise in heroin and opioid use across the region. Elected officials discussed how the Town and County are working to combat this matter and Suffolk County COPE Officer Steven Hughes spoke about his work. The data shared during the planning meeting will serve as the basis for the spring community forum. All members of the community are invited to attend the April 5th Drug Free Community Forum, which will begin at 7 p.m. at Rocky Point High School.

Balloons Over Mount Connecting curriculum with the upcoming holiday, W.S. Mount Elementary School fifth- and sixthgrade students honed their creative writing skills as they penned persuasive essays to Mr. Macy of Macy’s department stores. Teachers began the assignment by sharing the historical fiction books

“Balloons Over Broadway” and “Milly and the Macy’s Parade.” In groups, the classes discussed the historical importance of the annual parade, the types of balloons that are already featured and brainstormed ideas for a new balloon to debut in 2015. Students then worked collaboratively to

create large-scale mock ups of the designs they envisioned and put pen to paper to draft essays convincing Mr. Macy why their pieces should be included in the timehonored parade. The completed pieces were put on display for all to enjoy during the Mount’s Giving Day Parade.

about a young boy who was not only frighten about the move but also curious as to what America would be like and the endless possibilities his new country would bring. “Steven is a really talented writer and I was quite impressed at how he applied all of the writing techniques he learned in bout fourth and fifth-grade into the piece with such a strong and powerful voice,” said Ms. Maffia. “It was amazing how he could create something so realistic without having personally experienced the situation.” As a top winner, Steven was awarded a gift certificate, medal and commemorative certificate.

Arrowhead Elementary School fifth-graders are learning about science in hands-on, interactive and interdisciplinary ways this year thanks in part to a new grade-level initiative called “Science Tuesdays.” One Tuesday each month, the classroom teachers collaborate to construct

four different lessons surrounding one science topic. The classes then rotate between teachers to engage in handson learning activities, whereby receiving four different science lessons over the course of one day. This November, students learned about plant cells.

They acted out a play about the interactions of organelles, created ‘cellifies’ showing pictures of different cells to understand how organelles interact, used microscopes to observe onion cells and created analogies about organelles pertaining to the school building.

Eighth Grader Pens Book

P.J. Gelinas Junior High School eighth-grader Aidan McIlvaine has accomplished something not many peers his age have – he has become a published author with his first book hitting online shelves this fall.

The book “The Elementals: The Beginning” is about a team of teens with powers based off elements, such as fire and Earth, and their work to defeat an evil reign of terror. Aidan, who completed his first book

over the course of a year, was inspired to put pen to paper after an author visit at this elementary school. That author, Lou Petrucci, a sixth-grade teacher in the Three Village Central School District, spoke about his experience writing his book, which sparked Aidan’s interest in penning his own novel. “Writing is an outlet for me; something that I enjoy to do in my free time,” said Aidan. He credits his friend Dylan Matthews for helping to provide inspiration for the storyline throughout the development process and aspires to create a sequel to the book in the future. Thanksgiving Prep Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 120 dinners for long-term patients and home-bound seniors of the Dominican

Sisters of Hampton Bays in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the culinary program and its students. This marks the seventh year Suffolk County

Community College has happily done the holiday cooking. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 25th, beginning at 9 a.m.

at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center, 20 Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901. About 40 students and faculty chefs from the

college’s culinary program will prepare the meal whose ingredients were provided by the Dominican Sisters a dozen, 20 pound turkeys; 100 pounds of mashed potatoes; 50 pounds of

sweet potatoes; 80 pounds of stuffing; 25 pounds of assorted vegetables and 18 each of apple and pumpkin pies. And, of course, gravy – 5 gallons of it!

Stony Brook University’s Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, and Department of Theatre Arts announce their third annual Science Playwriting Competition. The winning entries, submitted by University faculty, current and former students and a freelance writer from California, were inspired by the lives of real people, common pop culture references and more. The contest, created by Christopher Herzog, associate professor at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook, combines science and theatre, while finding new ways of teaching difficult concepts, traditionally based in the classroom. “By bringing science and theatre together, the annual Science Playwriting Competition aims to find new ways of teaching, learning, and thinking,” said Herzog. “Science plays are an excellent tool for explaining difficult concepts and this competition provides an outlet for scientists and playwrights to go beyond the bounds of their normal ways of thinking, spark their imagination and synthesize a new experience for all.” Stony Brook students, staff, faculty and members of the community submitted 10-minute plays combining themes of science and theatricality. The top winners are:

First prize: Moira Chas, an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Stony Brook for her play “The Mathematical Visions of Alicia Boole,” - inspired by the life and work of Alicia Boole Stott, a mathematician remembered for her contributions to geometry, and for coining the word polytope.

Second prize: Michael Shodell, previously an undergraduate at Stony Brook in mathematics, is recognized for his play “A Number of Things. Shodell borrows from the life of Lewis Fry Richardson, who pioneered modern mathematical techniques of weather forecasting and tried to use similar techniques to predict

and prevent wars. Third prize: Colin West, a Ph.D. candidate at the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook (YITP), for his play “Counting Sheep” - a story set far back in the past, it’s a refreshing look at what, exactly, it means to count something. Two plays that received honorable mention include “Entropy” by Paige Borak, a senior Theatre Arts and Psychology major at Stony Brook and “A Planet is Born” by Hillary Bhaskaran, a freelance writer from southern California. The winning plays will be honored with a reception and showcased in public staged readings on Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 at 5 p.m. at the Simons Center Auditorium at Stony Brook. This event is free and open to the public. These competitions are sponsored by the Simons Center Art Program, the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) and the Stony Brook University Department of Theatre Arts. Play submissions for the fourth annual Science Playwriting Competition are now being accepted. Anchored by two runners finishing in the top ten, Suffolk County Community College won the 2015 NJCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship last Saturday. The Sharks clinched their program’s second national title and first since 2007. Freshman Ryleigh Donegan was the first Suffolk County studentathlete to cross the finish line, cracking the top five with a time of 19:26.7. Coming in behind her teammate in sixth place was Sharks sophomore Leana Wiebelt, finishing with a time of 19:35.9. Sophomore Kayla Clements completed

the race in 20:06.3, contributing an 11th place finish to the Suffolk County effort. The Sharks other qualifying finishes came from freshman Menely Genao and sophomore Ashlee Rommeney. Genao’s 20:33.3 performance earned 19th place, while Rommeney took 37th with a time of 21:24.2. Suffolk County Community College Athletic Director Kevin Foley lauded the team and Coach Matt French. “Coach French has done a tremendous job rebuilding the Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams, “Foley said. “In two short years, through his leadership and dedication,

Matt has lead Suffolk Cross Country and Track & Field into the national spotlight.” “I and the entire college community are proud of our women’s cross country team and the championship efforts of our scholar athletes,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “The ladies handled the expectations from their number one ranking with tenacity and maturity, getting the job done on the day it counted. I am proud of both the women and the men. Definitely a standout season for each team,” Coach Matt French said.

Mighty Maya’s Story

Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery.
