Minnesauke Elementary School sixth grade students and members of the Girl Scout Troop 655 gave back to the community through their recently competed Bronze Award project. Mindful of last year’s COVID-19 precautions, the troop held its meetings outside at Frank Melville Park in Setauket during the 2020-21 school year. During their first meeting, they identified the presence of mosquitoes in the area and knew they wanted to help ensure others were not affected by the insects when visiting the park.

The scouts met with a park trustee who helped advise them on how to make the bat houses and where they should be placed throughout the park – an environmentally friendly way to combat the mosquitoes. After making the bat houses, the scouts also assisted with the installation. To bring awareness to their project, the girls also presented to a younger troop about the bat houses and how they help the environment. Since they had several extra bat houses leftover,

the girls donated them to Sweetbriar Nature Center to help combat mosquitos on their property. Troop 655 completed this project as part of their work as Girl Scout Juniors and have recently bridged to Cadettes. The project was started in spring 2021 and completed this past summer. The Bronze Award is the highest Girl Scout Award that can be earned at the elementary school level and third highest award in the Girl Scouts of the USA.

In partnership with the NY Marine Rescue Center, the North Country Road Middle School (NCRMS) Science Club’s adopted turtle, “Peachy Keen,” was released back into the ocean at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays. Taking part in the event were six NCRMS students and their parents along with Science Club Advisor, Mrs. Opitz, and Math & Science K-12 Curriculum Specialist, Matthew Baruch. Since being released in August, Peachy Keen has made his way across the south shore of Long Island and has been most recently tagged on the south shore of Nassau County near Long Beach, NY. The NY Marine Rescue Center is currently working in collaboration with Canon to create a book about the program which will include NCRMS students’ experiences and photos about Peachy Keen’s rehabilitation and journey back to the ocean. The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small

businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates independent businesses. While Plaid Friday may have originated in California, it has now spread to local towns across the country. Plaid Friday precedes Small Business Saturday, meaning holiday shoppers can turn their two-day, postThanksgiving shopping excursions into 48 hours of opportunities to support small businesses. Shoppers have many different ways to support the Plaid Friday movement. • Look for signage or advertising regarding Plaid Friday. Many establishments may advertise Plaid Friday sales. Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). To boost morale for American service members all around the globe, the USO is meeting them where they are. “The heart of our mission is to ensure service members stay strong through connecting them to the things they love and fight for,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president of operations, programs, and entertainment at the USO. “When the pandemic prevented us from serving in person as we have done for over our 80-year history, we innovated new ways to virtually foster the spirit of connectedness. As we look forward to a post-pandemic future, we are proud to continue

strengthening the military – no matter the time or place.” Here are a few ways the USO brings vital morale and essential services directly to the nation’s military in far-reaching corners of the world: • For military units stationed in distant locations where there is no USO presence, USO2GO packages bridge the gap. USO2GO kits ensure service members have some of the small comforts of home, such as electronic gaming, sports equipment, board games, movies and personal care items. In 2020, USO2GO was heavily utilized to support quarantine sites for service members at military installations around the world. • Service members can be called at a moment’s notice to leave their families and homes to respond to emergency situations – all amidst a global pandemic. As troops work to save lives in moments of crisis, Mobile USO vehicles provide vital resources, support and comfort. These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, WiFi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these

USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hardto-reach areas. • Virtual and in-person entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170 entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories. Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, one-on-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations. • The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa. Three Prominent News Broadcasters Step Up To Help Life’s WORC

Besides being wellknown news broadcasters, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also have a deep respect for, and willingness to help Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services. The organization, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recently received $50,000 each from these prominent media professionals. According to Victoria Schneps-Yunis, it was Geraldo Rivera, who made the first contribution. It was Geraldo’s riveting investigative report in the early 1970s, which exposed the atrocities of Willowbrook State School, then the largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Victoria’s daughter was a resident there and she had long been fighting for better conditions. Geraldo’s report, which won him a Peabody Award, and Victoria’s fervent advocacy, ultimately led to Willowbrook’s closing. Victoria then founded Life’s WORC and opened its first group home in Little Neck, Queens 50 years ago. Geraldo has been

It was a visit by Geraldo, his wife Erica Levy, and Victoria to Bill O’Reilly’s home in Montauk where Bill learned more about Life’s WORC. Over lunch, Victoria and Geraldo shared the history of Life’s WORC and the amazing progress it has made over the past five decades. Talk turned to the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration, during which Victoria, Geraldo and Bill will all be honored. That led to Geraldo announcing his $50,000 donation, which Bill then matched. Sean Hannity, who had just hosted Geraldo and Erica at his East End Long Island home the previous night, made it a triumvirate and together, the “Three Musketeers” as Victoria fondly referred to them, helped create a new legacy fund for Life’s WORC. Victoria noted that the three broadcasters were all brought up on Long Island and they are supporting a cause in their own backyard adding that, “Life’s WORC is an organization that helps more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities and on the autism spectrum in warm, loving group homes and day programs supporting them and their families.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was

founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps Yunis, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled

veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. • Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes

for free or at cost. • Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locallybased Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating

USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their creativity and complete a

craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with

a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading

room. To learn about how you can help connect military families through reading, visit uso.org/programs. Parents universally know the draw of reading “one more book” to a pleading little one at bedtime. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.
