COUNTY TITLE - Kyra Sommerstad, a swimmer at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District, will head to the state championship after earning two county titles at the Suffolk County Championships, held on November 5th at Suffolk County Community College. The freshman swimmer took first place in both the 200-meter medley and the 100-meter backstroke. Her times were 2:07:88 and 57.16 respectively. Sommerstad will compete at Ithaca on November 12th.

All-Star Basketball Ward Melville High School boys’ basketball players Matt Hudzik and Alex Sobel were selected from a pool of hundreds to represent their county during this year’s Suffolk vs. Nassau All-Star Basketball games held at the Town of Oyster Bay
PAL facility in Hicksville. The pair was selected for this honor based on their performance at the grade 9-12 tryout. Matt represented the school on the senior team and Alex represented on the underclassman team. According to Ward
Melville coach, Alex Piccirillo, the “two young men represented the Three Village community with class, sportsmanship and hard work.” Mr. Piccirillo was also selected by his peers as the Suffolk County All-Stars coach.

Beyond the Vote Democracy was in action as the eighthgrade students in Dawn Callahan’s class at Rocky Point Middle School recently took an in-depth look at the presidential candidates running for election as well as the overall campaign process. After first selecting which individual they personally supported – either the democratic, republican or third-party candidate
– the students conducted a thorough research project on that person’s individual platform and stance on a certain issue. They documented their research using the NoodleTools resource and then practiced their public speaking skills by defending their choice in a mock debate. During the debate, each side worked to convince their peers that their candidate was best
suited for the presidency based on their view of such matters as foreign trade, terrorism, education, immigration and women’s rights. As a conclusion to the project, the students formalized their opinions in a persuasive essay and participated in a mock vote to select the winning candidate.
Stuffed with Love Joseph A. Edgar fourthgrade students in the Rocky Point School District showcased their creativity this fall as they fashioned baby scarecrows and raised $1,425.05 for the Rocky Point Teachers’ Association Kids in Need Fund. During the week
before Halloween, each student constructed individual scarecrows using colorful decorations and embellishments. The completed scarecrows were then placed on display in the hall outside the classrooms and the entire student body was invited to visit the scarecrow patch
and vote for their favorite one by depositing coins in its corresponding donation box. This project has been a long-standing tradition at JAE, dating back to 1999 when it was first introduced by former teacher, Sandy Finn Grunner.

Young Scholars P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventh-grader Jacqueline Wu, eighthgraders Nancy Zhong and Julia Zhu, and ninthgrader Leo Takemaru have been selected as a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics and accepted by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students to pursue mathematics and
mathematical science applications. To qualify, they competed against approximately 600 of the top ranking students nominated from school districts on Long Island. Selection by the institute implies that a student is among the top one-tenth of one percent in math of all students on Long Island in his or her grade.
The students will spend 60 hours in class over the course of 20 Saturday mornings, and on related outside projects. The curriculum will cover various mathematical topics not included in the standard course of study. Many of the institute’s graduates have gone on to win prestigious awards.

The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity soccer team in the Port Jefferson School District has done it again - they now hold the Long Island Championship
title. The girls secured the title after defeating Haldane High School at Sleepy Hollow High School on November 5th with a final score of 3-0.
Water Study
The team will head to Courtland on November 12th to compete in the New York State soccer championships and defend their state title.
As an extension of their classroom science curriculum, Nassakeag Elementary School fourth-grade students in the Three Village Central School District learned about water conservation and the water cycle during two interactive programs. During a workshop with the Cornell University Cooperative Extension
of Suffolk County, the students explored what they can do to help local bays and watersheds. They discovered how various kinds of pollution make their way into the bay and ocean and how it affects the local marine live. The topics were visually emphasized during a hands-on demonstration, which called for the

students to work together to build a storm drain system. In addition, the Suffolk County Water Authority spoke with the classes about the water cycle as well as the source and importance of protecting drinking water on Long Island.

International Accolades

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.
Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom.

Although not yet old enough to vote in the actual election, students at W.S. Mount Elementary School recently experienced the act during a schoolwide mock election. Similar to the official election, each student received a voter registration card before casting their votes using paper ballots. They not
only voted on which presidential candidate they thought should be elected but also on a new Mount school mascot. The students selected Donald Trump as the presidentelect and the meerkat as the new mascot. The event was organized by the fifth-grade classes and teachers, who were onsite during the vote to
oversee the process and assist with any questions the young voters had. The simulated event tied into the fifth-grade social studies curriculum, as the classes are currently studying the types of government in place in countries in the Western Hemisphere.
Teachers Take the Stage Music teachers from throughout the Three Village Central School District took center stage this November to perform in a special faculty concert called “From Bach to Rock and Back Again.” During the event, the
25 teachers showcased their musical talents by performing 16 different songs. They sang such pieces as “Cell Block Tango” from the musical “Chicago” and performed a piece they called “Mozart Meets Led Zeppelin” on

In honor of Veterans Day, first-grade students in Michael Dragotta’s class at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District recently put pencil to paper to create dozens of colorful cards for local veterans. The students used their
creativity as they drew patriotic pictures and drafted letters thanking the veterans for their service. The completed cards were donated to the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. The project was of special significance for Mr.

individually introduced and presented with colorful letters of appreciation and poppy pins. Rocky Point Middle School once again organized a Veterans Day letter writing campaign, for which hundreds of students penned messages of thanks and praise for the veterans living at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. The effort was conceptualized by seventh-grade teacher John Mauceri and supported by the school’s English teachers. In addition to the letters created by the middle school students, FJC and JAE also wrote letters. That effort was coordinated by Gloria Meyer at JAE and Dave Crawford at FJC.

Letter of Intent Before her family, high school coaches and administrators, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Jackie Brown penned her name to a National Letter of Intent with Adelphi University at a signing ceremony on November 9th. Brown, who will play
field hockey in the fall of 2017, has been involved in the sport since the age of 6. She has been a member of the high school’s varsity field hockey team since the eighth grade and holds the leading goal scorer title for Long Island. She has also been named as an All-State and All-Tournament player.
In addition to playing field hockey, Brown is a member of her school’s softball and basketball teams. She is also the vice president of the Student Organization, co-president of the Varsity Club and a member of the Yearbook Club and National Honor Society.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School students in Emma Domino’s international foods classes in the Three Village Central School District learned about locally grown produce during a recent visit to the Sang Lee Farm in Peconic, New York. During the visit, the students toured one of
the farm’s planting fields and worked to identify the different items being grown. Representatives were on hand to explain how the farm operates in an organic manner, planting certain plants or herbs that repel insects. Students were also able to harvest, taste and even bring home samples of

Dancer/choreographer Kendra Leigh Mace presented a dance routine from Singing in the Rain to show how she teaches students to embrace who they are and how to highlight those characteristics through movement and dance. The plot of Singing in the Rain allows for tie-ins
to building self-esteem, respect, honesty, language, and communication. Kendra can work with students on themes that are a bit meatier like body identification, dignified and undignified behavior, and can make functional connections to math, and historical connections to social studies. Several attendees embraced their vulnerability and participated in a movement exercise with Kendra. Everyone in the room was supportive and applauded their colleagues’ willingness to learn about themselves through dance.

Soaring Into College Rocky Point High School Eagle pride was almost palatable this November when eight graduating seniors put pen to paper and committed to compete on the collegiate level. During the school’s NCAA singing day, the talented student-athletes were surrounded by proud parents, teachers and coaches as they took a step toward their future and singed National Letters of Intent. “These students are models of hard work, perseverance, determination and incredible character,” said Charles Delargy, director of

Eagle Scout Honored
On October 22nd, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright honored new Eagle Scout Brandon Cea from Troop 427 in Stony Brook during a ceremony held at the Setauket Fire Department. Councilwoman Cartright was joined by Brandon’s family, friends and fellow boy Scouts. For his Eagle Scout project, Brandon renovated the Nature Walk for the Long Island Veterans Home in Stony Brook. The extensive task
required refurbishing benches, birdhouses and landscaping the grounds. Councilwoman Cartright presented Brandon a Town Proclamation recognizing his efforts and achievement. Councilwoman Cartright said, “It is with gratitude that I present our proclamation to Brandon and personally thank him for his commitment to the community. The Nature Walk is a place of respite and recreation for the resident veterans and
their families. Brandon’s improvements enhance enjoyment and natural beauty of the space. His work promises greater use for years to come.” To become an Eagle Scout, a boy must first work his way through all preceding Boy Scout ranks while meeting certain requirements, such as merit badges, holding a leadership position within the troop and completing a community service project.

event. As part of the program, more than 20 classrooms at Miller Place High School were transformed into haunted houses using spooky, student-designed decorations. Elementary school students from the community visited each classroom to play games, dance to live music and collect candy. The Miller Place
High School student government hosted Safe Halloween to eliminate any potential risk of children trick-or-treating at strangers’ houses, while building a stronger community with teachers, friends and families within the school district. A portion of ticket sales for Safe Halloween are to be donated ALS research.

Democratic Process Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School recently engaged students in an interactive lesson on the democratic process on Election Day. As part of their educations on democracy, elections and the voting
process, students filled out “voter registration cards” and ballots. Students then took their ballots to a private “voting booth” to cast their votes for “The Duck” or “Farmer Brown” based on a book the students are reading in class, “Duck for President.”
Once each student had voted their teachers counted the ballots for each candidate and announced the winner. This lesson was part of the District’s mission to connect what students learn in the classroom to the outside world.

Sobering Lesson
The Miller Place School District recently held an interactive driver-safety workshop at Miller Place High School in an effort to promote safe driving habits among students. During the program, seniors learned about the dangers of being impaired and distracted behind the wheel using interactive, virtual-reality technology. The program, “Save a Life Tour,” is a comprehensive, high-impact, safe-driving awareness program offered
to high school students throughout the country. Miller Place High School was the tour’s only stop on Long Island this year. One of the workshop’s main features was a high-tech driver’s-seat simulator, which mimicked the impairments of having a high blood alcohol content. The simulator enabled students to experience the potentially deadly consequences of drinking and texting while driving.
Drone Technology
The purpose of the “Save a Life Tour” was to make students more aware of driving dangers by showing how one poor decision can lead to crashes, injuries and sometimes death. Students experienced how much the brakes and steering wheel “lag” as blood-alcohol levels increase on the simulator. They experienced difficulty in stopping, turning and accelerating as alcohol affects reaction times.

Students enrolled in the HVAC Program at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center are learning how to utilize small Unmanned Aircraft Systems aka drone technology in the classroom. HVAC Teacher Nick DeBlanco said, “Learning how to use a drone will improve their skills as HVAC Technicians and will make them more employable.” In 2014, Mr. DeBlanco received a Gary D. Bixhorn grant to purchase a DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone; in 2015 DeBlanco was awarded additional grant money. He used the funds to obtain a Thermal Image Camera which he mounted on the drone. After the Federal Aviation Administration’s most recent rules were
issued in August 2016 for drones, DeBlanco and his Teaching Assistant Evan Damadeo, a FAA licensed Certified Flight Instructor and licensed small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operator, have been working with the HVAC students on obtaining their Remote Pilot Certificate. “We are teaching them how to safely fly a drone and how to handle emergencies related to a drone,” said Damadeo. In the academic setting students have begun learning about registration, certification requirements, and eligibility for the certificate. Damadeo said, “Over the course of a week we’ve covered how to handle a strong force wind, or fly away conditions; how to safely handle, charge,
and store lithium batteries; what to do if you lose GPS; who the final authority is in case of an emergency; and, how to interpret and read weather reports.” After the lecture, the students practice flying the drone in a field outside their classroom under the guidance of either DeBlanco or Damadeo. An upcoming project involves the students visiting a local church and, utilizing the thermal image camera on the drone, find and propose a fix to any heat loss in the building. “This new skill will better prepare my students for future careers. Employers are already starting to utilize them in order to make their businesses more profitable, efficient, and safe,” said, DeBlanco.

Book Election To teach elementary school students about the presidential voting process, the Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District held a mock election where the Animal Party went headto-head with the People Party. Prior to a November 8th election, students participated in a primary vote where they nominated a presidential
and vice presidential candidate from each party based off books that they checked out between October 27th and November 2nd. Candidates included Fancy Nancy, Bad Kitty, Fly Guy, Junie B. Jones, Harry Potter, Pigeon, Captain Underpants and Aslan from “Chronicles of Narnia.” Winning the primary were Pigeon and Aslan for the Animal Party and
Harry Potter and Captain Underpants for the People Party.
