tudents at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School recently had the chance to attend a Dance Workshop and Master Class with one of Broadway’s rising stars – Giuseppe Bausilio – this fall. The teenage Broadway actor, who stared in such shows as Billy Elliot, The Musical and Newsies, provided his dancing expertise and experiences as a performer for more than 60 students and staff members. to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. Port Jefferson crosscountry runners achieved great feats at the Disney Cross Country Classic presented by New Balance at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, FL on October 10th. Senior cross-country standout James Burke placed second overall in

the varsity boys Peter Pan Division race, which featured 178 national runners. Burke, who was the first Royal to win the championship in 2013, finished with a time of 16:00.65. Teammate Justin Julich finished sixth with a time of 17:12.94 and Parker

Schoch finished 18th with a time of 18:17.32. Also competing were Matthew Keresztes, Jefferson Koutsantanou, Alden Mohacsi and Michael Spyrou, all of whom helped the Royals place third overall in the team results in the Peter Pan Division.

Focus On Bullying The Three Village Central School District takes a proactive and comprehensive approach to the topic of bullying and this year’s adolescent issues play at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School focused solely on this heavily discussed topic. The show, Pickin’: A Bullying Story, detailed

the subject from several angles and perspectives: the bullies, the bullied and those who witness the behavior. Twenty-four students and five teachers who performed in the show told the story of a student who was bullied by peers and the tragic repercussions that ensued. A preview of the play

Cross-Country Classic

was held during the school day for students in grades eight and nine. The entire community was invited to attend a free performance in the evening. This is the 12th year the school has produced a show focused on a topic prevalent in the lives of today’s adolescents.

Performance Workshop members. During the program, attendees were treated to a performance of the “Electricity,” one of the show’s most popular songs and dance and participated in a question and answer session before engaging in the dance workshop. The students were taught moves that they would eventually put together in to a choreographed portion of one the numbers from

“Newsies.” “It was fun and great to hear stories of what it is like to work on and perform in a Broadway show,” said ninth-grader Meghan Forte. “He was so nice and open about his life, it made it easy for us to connect with him and we gained a greater respect for him and what he does because of that,” added ninth-grader Megan Kuhnel.

Original films created by three Ward Melville High School students – Rose Kelso, Jordan Pollak and Henry Da Costa – were broadcasted for large audiences as they graced the big screen at the AMC Theater in Times Square during this year’s AllAmerican High School

Film Festival. The students’ films were selected from applicants from 17 countries and 48 states. As part of the festival, students competed against a number of tough entrants, many of whom came from private arts high schools were students attend film, screen writing

and other career-related classes each day all year long and raise upwards of $20,000 to produce their films. The students’ entries received high praise during the event and Da Costa’s film, “Hysteria” was nominated for best horror film.

After learning at a council meeting that a single dollar can go a long way in providing a child in need with a 40day supply of safe drinking water, council members got to work creating a fundraising campaign.

The students designed posters and trick-ortreated for donations from their peers during their lunch periods. Between October 20th and October 31st, they raised $100 for the cause.

Shooting For Top Grades Arrowhead Elementary School students focused on the importance of working together and remaining dedicated to their academics during a recent assembly program with the New York Islanders. During the event, representatives from the Islanders and mascot Sparky the Dragon spoke to the importance of teamwork and how students, teachers and

school staff members can work together to accomplish a goal. To further demonstrate this concept, several students were challenged to work in a group to try and dress in head-to-toe goalie gear, while a teacher worked to accomplish the task alone. The assembly also included a video of the current team members relaying what traits make a good teammate, the

importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and remaining bully-free. At the end of the event, the students were encouraged to enter the team’s Blades for Grades program. This initiative rewards students who demonstrate increased academic performance with two tickets to an upcoming Islanders home game.

Students Feeding Students Despite the chill in the air, 16 Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Leo Club members stood in front of Stop and Shop in Miller Place on November 2nd collecting canned goods for Island Harvest’s Students Feeding Students challenge.

Throughout the day, the Port Jefferson students collected 35 boxes of food and $200. They hope it is enough to retain their title of Suffolk County collection champions. Last fall, the Leo Club, under the direction of advisers Brian Chalmers

and Kristine Vaccaro, collected a few hundred pounds of food, placing them in first place and earning a trophy and visit from a former New York Jets player, who signed autographs. Vaccaro was also invited to appear on Katie Couric’s talk show.
