Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club honored those who helped to protect and preserve the country’s freedoms at the Port Jefferson School District’s Armed Forces tribute, located at the high school. The students set flags out for each of the armed forces of the United States at the tribute that was created and unveiled in spring 2019 with much school and community support. LONG ISLAND COMMUNITY HOSPITAL HEROES WEEK - Long Island Community Hospital recently celebrated Heroes Week recognizing all of their healthcare heroes who stood strong against COVID-19, for the protection of our community. As part of the week-long celebration, gift bags including a commemorative medal and a long sleeve T-Shirts were distributed to the entire staff. The shirts were emblazoned with an original “Courageous Hearts” design, created especially for the hospital by a local designer. The original graphic depicts two caped heroes facing the challenges of the pandemic with purpose, commitment and care. Both were proudly worn by the staff throughout the hospital in a display of unity and team spirit.

The dream of Camp PaQua-Tuck originated in 1941 as a polio camp. The Rocky Point Rotary Club provided $2,500 to help continue the camp’s mission and the contribution was matched by a secret donor. The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Amid Pandemic Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding
the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation
of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage long-term. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

Safe Halloween events took on a whole new meaning this year and the Port Jefferson School District created a memorable event for many young students in the community. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s Varsity Club members, along with advisers, teachers Deirdre Filippi and Jesse Rosen, put together a well-organized, drive-thru trick or treat event at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School on Oct. 31. With stations that included a number of themes such as sports, superheroes, Willy Wonka, Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce Celebrating Creativity: Creative Responses to Challenging Times a fine art exhibition featuring eighty-six works by fifty-one artists to be held through Dec. 19 at Mills Pond Gallery in St. James. Regular Gallery hours are Wed. - Fri., 10 am - 4pm; Sat. and Sun., 12 – 4 pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Tuesdays and closed Nov. 25 – 29. Artists’ creative response to the coronavirus crisis brings us works that represent the experience of artists during the pandemic. We asked artists to show us what they have been creating during the pandemic and to share with us their thoughts and feelings about creating during these challenging times. Some works in the exhibit express the fear and anxiety while others find beauty in nature, or celebrate simple pleasures of everyday life. Some artists created to share memories of past joyful times… some created work specifically about the pandemic. Many shared that the creation of their art helped process their feelings. The common thread…joy in the simple act of creating. Cat in the Hat, jungle animals, Hawaii, space and spooky Halloween motifs, the volunteers distributed thousands of pieces of candy to the young trick or treaters who visited with their families. “It was a tremendous success,” Filippi said. “We couldn’t be happier with the turnout. Our volunteers teamed up, decorated their assigned tables with colorfullythemed decorations and spent the morning making a lot of kids and their families happy.” More than 200 cars showed up with families eager to
share in the safe Halloween festivities. Elementary School Principal Thomas Meehan, Assistant Principal Amy Laverty, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Christine Austen and Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan also attended to help hand out candy. “We are so proud of our student athletes,” said Rosen. “They showed us that they can rise above adversity and still find a way to do something amazing for the community.”
