The dental professional coordinated the effort to not only keep students’ teeth healthy, but to benefit the Boots on the Ground charity. For every pound of candy that a student donated, they received $1, and the schools with the highest amount of donations were rewarded with prizes.

On Sunday, November 8th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered in recognition of substance abuse recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s 26th Annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This family-focused community event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, and featured powerful stories of personal struggles with addiction, as well as highlighting the efforts of addiction service providers and advocates for changes to policies affecting those suffering from substance abuse disorders. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) honored two individuals whose outstanding

accomplishments have shaped public policy, expanded public awareness, enhanced treatment options, and help many individuals address growing drug and alcohol problems. The honorees include Community Champion Bruce W. Both, President, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 and Fisher of Men honoree, Anthony Rizzuto, Provider Relations, Seafield Center and Executive Director of F.I.S.T. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on both our victories and challenges of the past year, as well as to rally around the crucial issues

for the coming year. We have made great strides in 2015 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming - and completely treatable disease cycle. To commemorate this year’s Veterans Day, students and staff members throughout the Rocky Point School District paused to celebrate and remember those individuals who have dedicated their lives in service to the country. Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School’s annual Veterans Day program honored a number of heroes in attendance through written word, song and visual presentations.

Members of the fifth-grade select chorus, High Notes, performed patriotic songs, such as “The Brave” and a moving rendition of “Taps” on hand chimes; student Council representatives shared essays about the importance of celebrating Veterans’ Day and presented each veteran in attendance with a letter of appreciation; and the technology club offered a detailed explanation of the items included on a POW/ MIA Remembrance Table and played a video they

created. Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School second-graders also honored local veterans in their lives through song and written words. benefit the Boots on the Ground charity. For every pound of candy that a student donated they received $1 and the schools with the highest amount of donations were rewarded with cash prizes. Minnesauke was awarded a $500 donation from Funt Orthodontics. Setauket Elementary

School Student Council also coordinated a candy drive. They collected unwanted and unopened Halloween candy three days following the holiday. The candy they received was donated to a local dentist’s “Operation Gratitude” drive, which will provide care packages to troops overseas.

Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is hosting a warm clothing drive at their Hauppauge office for Long Islanders in need. They are accepting donations of new and gently used warm clothing from generous donors in the area. Coats, sweaters, pants, gloves or any other clothing that can protect from the harsh winter season are appreciated. Clothing brought to the LIHC collection bin from November 9th through November 25th at 1383 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, will be gifted to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island. Clothing can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Society uses donations like these to help the 200,000 Long Islanders that St. Vincent de Paul serves annually. These materials are either given away to people in need or sold at an affordable price at St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores. The LIHC is a coalition of health and human service providers and organizations, working together to improve the health of Long Islanders. St. Vincent de Paul is a member of the LIHC, along with all of the hospitals on Long Island, the two county health departments, dozens of community-based organizations, colleges, and other health and human service agencies. Tackling Service Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity football players recently scored two touchdowns in the name of community service. On November 1st, the Port Jefferson team held a successful food

drive to benefit Long Island Harvest. Then, the following day, the athletes sponsored a blood drive in conjunction with New York Blood Services. Players, coaches, faculty, administrators and community members

donated enough blood to help 72-120 patients. The team says the community service initiatives are a way of giving back to the community, which has always supported Port Jefferson football.

Bottle Cap Art During the course of three days, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School students recycled colorful bottle caps to craft a large mural that will be prominently displayed in the school. The school’s student-run Green Team spearheaded the hands-on project in an

effort to teach their peers about the importance of recycling. To bring the project to fruition, the Green Team held a schoolwide collection drive for bottle caps and worked with visiting artist Leslie Slatter, of Green Earth Craft of Plainview, to design the mural.

The mural features a water-themed design around the word, S.A.I.L., which stands for the school’s values - Safety, Acceptance, Independence and Learning. Each bottle cap in the mural adorns a student’s name and initials.

Winners in Service Rocky Point Middle School and High School baseball teams are not only strong competitors on the field but are strong advocates for service within the community. As has become a tradition, the teams joined together this fall to volunteer at Maureen’s Haven Homeless Shelter. The teammates spent weeks preparing for

their visit to the shelter, collecting items like hats, gloves, rain ponchos and baked homemade goodies like cookies, brownies and muffins. Additionally, they collected left over Halloween candy to make treat bags for the homeless and purchased over 50 gift cards to give as Thanksgiving and holiday gifts. During their visit,

students set up the shelter’s beds, set the dinning table and packed lunches for the next day. They spent a great deal of time at the shelter preparing the site for the homeless, making it look festive for the adults that just need a safe place to stay. The teams’ coaches noted that they have plans to return to volunteer again in March.

Thank a Veteran As a token of appreciation for the service and sacrifices made, Rocky Point Middle School students drafted more than 700 letters to veterans living in the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. The project, which was spearheaded by seventh-

grade teacher John Mauceri, involved students in grades 6-8 and their social studies teachers. The original letters noted how the veterans were appreciated and treasured for their years of service to the country and for protecting the nation’s freedoms.

Each resident at the home received approximately two letters just before Veterans Day. The project held a special connection for Mr. Mauceri, as his father, an engineer and cook during the Korean War, is a resident at that home.

The tragic results poor decisions can have on motor vehicle drivers and passengers was the foundation for a recent eye-opening program offered to Ward Melville High School students. The event, called Driving Equation Teen

Presentation, focused on the importance of wearing a seat belt, as well as the negatives of distracted driving and driving under the influence of substances. Throughout the event, presenter Al Ferrari visually and verbally demonstrated the

quick turn these actions can take and that one’s life can change seven seconds after impact. The program was open to all health classes and was delivered by on behalf of EAC Network through a grant from State Farm.

Rooted in History Setauket Elementary School fourth-grade students had the chance to step back in time and learn about Native Americans as they participated in the interactive program Journey’s Into Native American Territory. As part of the gradelevel’s curriculum, the students learn about the culture of Native Americans and New York State. The

in-house field trip, funded by the PTA, offered the classes the chance to gain deeper understanding of the Eastern Woodlands Native Americans. Throughout the program, the students listened as presenters spoke firsthand about tribal traditions, including games, arts and crafts, and songs and dances. They also visited museum

exhibits displaying a variety of Native American artifacts, including bows and arrows, period clothes worn before European contact and a 4-foot-long longhouse. Additionally, the students learned about different aspects of the Iroquois government and had the chance to create their own pinch clay pots.

The Walk for Beauty builds upon its roots as a community-organized event by strengthening participation of local student groups, service organizations, and businesses. Twenty-eight Eastern Suffolk BOCES Practical Nursing students participated in the Hercules on the Harbor Walk for Beauty fundraising event held in Stony Brook. They raised $1,000. These students joined thousands of Long Islanders to raise awareness about breast cancer. Since its inception, this Walk for Beauty collaboration between Stony Brook University and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization has raised more than $1.2 million for cancer research.

Philanthropy Honored At the annual Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation Monte Carlo Night fundraiser held earlier this fall, three prestigious awards were presented to philanthropic leaders and organizations who exhibit tremendous commitment, selflessness and long-term dedication to helping others. The Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented both to a group - the volunteers of the Welcome INN Soup Kitchen and to Dr. Vincent Basilice, a highly-respected ophthalmic surgeon and trustee on the Jefferson’s Ferry Board of Directors. Jefferson’s Ferry resident Claire Donohue received the Community Builder Award in recognition of her many contributions to both Jefferson’s Ferry and the larger Three Village community. “The Three Village area is home to a wonderful community of volunteers, as is Jefferson’s Ferry,” said Bob Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “It is a privilege to honor these people who give so much of themselves for the greater good.” Hunger is a significant issue on Long Island and Welcome INN, which operates under the auspices of The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), served over 20,000 meals, five nights a week last year to residents of the Port Jefferson area. Now in its 26th year, Welcome INN is funded solely by a few small grants and individual donations. In accepting the award, Welcome INN President Marge Tumilowicz, emphasized that the award is reflective of the dedication of the volunteers. “Of the 170 Welcome INN volunteers and board members,

not one person receives a salary,” she said. “All funding goes directly to purchasing bulk food, plastic ware, disposable dishes, and other needs.” Dr. Vincent Basilice has a private Ophthalmology practice in East Setauket. He is on staff at both John T. Mather and St. Charles hospitals and has served the

local community for his entire career. Dr. Basilice is also an entrepreneur and CEO of Oceansafe (Artanis LLC.), which manufactures a sustainable high performance green building system that has been used by Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation and the Sustainable New Orleans Plan. Dr. Basilice and his wife, Dahna, also

spend a great deal of time and resources on charitable animal philanthropic work. Claire Donohue received the Community Builder Award in recognition of her many volunteer contributions. She served as Chair of the Jefferson’s Ferry Resident Council for two years and is currently the Recording Secretary, Chair of its Communications Committee and Co-Chair of the Library. Claire also volunteers at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook. Citations and proclamations were presented from NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo, NYS Assemblyman Steve Englebright, NYS Senator John J. Flanagan, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright. Monte Carlo Night is the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s most important fundraiser. This year 369 tickets were sold for Monte Carlo Night, bringing The Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation $62,600 closer, and just over halfway to its goal of raising $1 Million for its Successful Aging Project. An important part of the Successful Aging Project is the relocation of the Jefferson’s Ferry Wellness Center to the heart of the Jefferson’s Ferry community. Now under construction, the new Wellness Center will expand medical service programs and add an on-staff wellness nurse, larger exam rooms for physician visits, more convenient restrooms and private spaces for consultation and conversation.

Robocalls, or unsolicited prerecorded calls and SPAM text messages from businesses or organizations, aren’t only annoying, but illegal under federal law if sent to your mobile device without your consent. Some calls may ask you to press a number to be removed. Legitimate companies will adhere to your request;

however, some dishonest organizations will call you even more. Fortunately, wireless companies are working on easy ways, many times for free, to help you avoid robocalls. What You Can Do You play an integral role in stopping robocalls. If you get an automated call or text you didn’t sign up for to your cellphone, report it to the proper organizations and/or authorities. Here’s how:

• Forward the SPAM text messages which are sent from a phone number to 7726 (or SPAM). This free text exchange with the carrier will report the SPAM number and you will get a response from the carrier thanking you for reporting the SPAM. • File a complaint for texts and/or voice calls with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or Federal Communications Commission (FCC) via their websites, ftc.gov and fcc.gov, or by calling the

FTC at (888) 382-1222 or the FCC at (888) CALLFCC. By providing this information, you help stop these robocalls. Building a Movement Long Island organizations gathered at the first Progressive Vision for Long Island: Organizing for Success conference. This conference was organized by a new groundbreaking initiative called Long Island Progressive Network that brings together immigration, social justice, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, labor rights, education, sustainable development and community organizations to work together to build power and to move progressive issues throughout Long Island, the state and the nation. The Conference is a historic event because it is the first time Long Island organizations explored what can happen if we bring together people from many different issue areas that all have an interest in creating positive change on Long Island. By: Frank Fernandez Long ago, I saw a structure, unusual in its shape and size. Imposing. Hulking, I needed a closer look. Then I noticed it.

Inconspicuous. No one had even noticed a small crack had formed. I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst. Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear. Many have tried, but none have succeeded, holding back the dam of Time.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do. But the crack still grew. Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran. Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs. Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!
