Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact

A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives: Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, ﬁnding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life. Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important ﬁnding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the ﬂu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food

The health resource Medscape, powered by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance. Conﬁrm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identiﬁed. These illnesses may include

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

Interface Toy Drive On December 16th, all five JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All of the popular personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio 103.9, Party 105, La Fiesta 98.5 and JVC’s newest station, Oldies 98.1, will be broadcasting from the lobby at Town Hall. The event is open to the public and will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who stop by are asked to donate a new, unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a child of a family in need as they open a gift during the holiday season. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys, ranging from board games and dolls to toy trucks and bicycles. Supervisor Romaine said, “Thanks to our Youth Bureau, JVC Broadcasting and the generous residents of Brookhaven Town, so many children will enjoy a Merry Christmas this year. I urge everyone to come down to Town Hall, join in the festivities and donate toys for this great cause.” The INTERFACE Toy Drive

is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau. Through raising donations, they will provide presents for more than 7,000 children in need, ranging in age from infant to 15 years of age. Beyond Inﬁnity As part of the “Science Unplugged” program offered through Stony Brook University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, Rocky Point High School students in Jack Nielsen’s astronomy class had the chance to learn about the mysteries of space during a guest lecture with NASA solar system ambassador and Ph.D. candidate Ahmad Malik. During the presentation,

“Black Holes: Time and Space,” the students discussed such matters as how black holes are created, the differences between white dwarf and neutron stars and the theories of relativity. The program provided for a nice introduction to the topic, which the class will be studying in depth in the months ahead. “We’re excited to be participating in the program,” said Aaron

their time to create pipe cleaner pins and cards for breast cancer patients at Mather Hospital’s Fortunato Breast Health Center. The pins and cards were

made after school with the help of teachers Deanna Lilimpakis and Kristen Newbert. Last year, the students made breast cancer awareness key chains.

WALKING FOR BEAUTY - On October 23rd, the 23rd Annual Walk for Beauty/ Hercules Run was celebrated in Stony Brook. In spite of the cold, hundreds of combined walkers and runners took to the streets to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research at Stony Brook University Hospital, which has raised over $1.3 million since its inception in 1994. A portion of the funds will help pay for wigs and prosthesis for cancer patients. The event is an all-volunteer initiative with no administrative costs, and all proceeds stay in the community.

The drive will run through December 15th. Westy Self Storage in East Northport will serve as a designated drop off location for donations. The Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach consists of a dedicated group of parishioners who respond to the needs of others compassionately and professionally. They together bring people who are in need of assistance

This program offers the parish community a way to respond to those among us who are hurting financially, emotionally and/or physically.
