Setauket Elementary School kindergarten through second grade students were reminded of important fire safety tips this October when members of the Setauket Fire Department conducted a series of inschool assembly programs.
The events, which were held in honor of Fire Prevention Month, covered such topics as developing a family meeting place and escape plan in case of an emergency, the importance of having working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in all homes as
well as tips for staying safe should a fire occur. Additionally, the students took an upclose look at some of the equipment the firefighters use during emergencies as they stepped aboard a working firetruck and ambulance.

These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood. We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together.

The procession of puppets, led by Tom Manuel (President and Founder of The Jazz Loft) and a New Orleans Brass Band, will begin at 2:15 pm at the Stony Brook Fire Department in the Harbor Crescent section of the Village. There will be additional festivities throughout the day including community
school bands, a petting zoo, holiday train display, of course, Santa, who arrives with great fanfare aboard a Stony Brook Fire Department truck at 2 pm to the front of the Post Office to hear children’s wishes until 5 pm. He returns in dramatic style at 5:30 pm atop the Stony Brook Fire Department’s 3,000 light float for the annual tree lighting. There is also the Promenade of Trees competition where families and community members decorate some 60 holiday trees which
stay on display for all to enjoy through January 3. The public will vote in a winner who will receive a $150 Stony Brook Village Gift Certificate, usable in all shops and restaurants. A donation of $25 must accompany the registration form. A portion of your donation will go to the Santa’s Children’s Fund which provides food and clothing for needy children and families. NAMAG is a mutual aid group, which allows for the sharing of resources such as personnel and equipment during emergencies. The hosting utility reimburses for associated costs. PSE&G and PSEG Long Island employees assisted PG&E for about one week.

United In Kindness Students in Port Jefferson Middle School joined schools across the nation to share a powerful message against bullying behavior on Unity Day on Oct. 23. By wearing something orange, a vibrant color that is associated with safety and visibility, the students were excited to share in promoting their important message. The theme of the day was to unite against bullying and all social studies classes in the school viewed a powerful and informative Powerpoint and video presentation, detailing the nationally recognized event. “We show solidarity with all schools in sharing with our students the message that we’re together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion,” said teacher Monica Consalvo, who annually coordinates the schoolwide campaign.
