The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris and downed tree removal. The Service will use the majority of the funding - $11 million - to restore marshes at three national wildlife refuges, improving the resiliency of the Long Island coast against future storms. An additional $1 million will be invested in projects to repair visitor facilities and Service assets damaged during the super storm. “The marshes at Long Island refuges helped to protect inland areas from the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy,” said refuge manager Michelle Potter. “We will focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants

to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris

removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multi-agency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s one-year anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish and other wildlife, and serve as natural extreme weather buffer zones for many of the island’s populated areas. In honor of submariners who gave their lives for their country, the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week. (The (SS) is a military specialty designator, signifying a sailor is “Qualified In Submarines”). Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children. The USSVI has over 13,000 members in 164 Bases in the U.S. Year round, U.S. Submarine Veterans visit children

in Children’s Hospitals, Cancer Hospitals, Hospices, Child Psychiatric Facilities, Ronald McDonald Houses, and Camps for Children with medical challenges; in essence, any place where a child is medically challenged. During the visits, they make the children Honorary Submariners. Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) is a USSVI Community Outreach Program whose goal is to bring smiles to children battling challenging medical conditions, anywhere they are being treated. U.S. Submarine Veterans voluntarily do this by giving these children caring attention,

The Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Program is part of the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation (USSVCF). The USSVCF is the charitable arm of USSVI. It was formed to further the purpose of the USSVI by assuming the responsibility of some USSVI activities which are charitable in nature. The USSVI purpose, in part, is to “Perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country.”

On Sunday, November 3rd, more than 600 cancer survivors and family members were honored for their strength and courage at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s 9th Annual Cancer Survivors’ Day held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Attendees were motivated by award winning vocalist, entertainer and cancer survivor, Kevin Sharp. In remission since 1991, he is the only Make-AWish “wish” child to become the wish request of other kids, bringing his experience with a rare form of cancer full circle. On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 30th Anniversary Gala at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel in Melville. The event raised over $50,000 for ADRC. Camp Fundraiser

On October 19th, friends and members of the Shapiro family joined Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck board members at a fundraiser for the camp at Hurricane Grill and Wings in Syosset. The event was created in honor of Jodi Shapiro, a Special Education Administrator for Manhasset Schools, who suddenly passed away after a brief battle with cancer this summer. Approximately 250 people attended the fundraiser. The event raised nearly $14,000, surpassing the fundraising goal of $10,000. During the event, Mark Shapiro, Ms. Shapiro’s brother, spoke to attendees about his sister’s passion for helping special-needs children. He expressed how

important Camp Pa-QuaTuck’s mission was to her and how grateful he was for everyone’s generosity at the event. Throughout the event, guests had the opportunity to enjoy live music, a silent auction, a 5/50 raffle and a hot wing eating contest, with all of the proceeds benefiting Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Ms. Shapiro began working with the Manhasset School District in 2009. She implemented programs for children with special needs at Shelter Rock, Munsey Park, Our Lady of Grace, and St. Mary’s elementary schools. In 2012, Ms. Shapiro was promoted to Assistant Director of Committees on Preschool and Elementary

Special Education. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Anxiously Awaiting A Decision Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to. As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down. There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will. The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has begun to renovate its Stoll Wing, home to preserved wild animal specimens brought back from around the world by Charles H. Stoll, a noted explorer and big-game hunter who was also a museum trustee and benefactor. The most visible part of the project will be the restoration of the 20 mounted animal heads that crown the wall above the diorama exhibition cases. George Dante, president of Wildlife Preservations of West Paterson, N.J., the taxidermist of choice for the American Museum of Natural History, took 20 of the heads back to his studio on October 30th to begin cleaning and restoring them. Other improvements include a new heating, ventilating and airconditioning system to insure preservation of the specimens. In Stoll’s memory, his granddaughter, Lynnda Speer, and her husband, Roy, through the Roy

M. Speer Foundation, gave the Vanderbilt a gift of $100,000 to endow the restoration and modernization of the Stoll Wing and its dioramas. (The wing was built in 1970 to complement the adjacent Habitat Room built decades earlier by William K. Vanderbilt II.) Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the Vanderbilt, said, “It’s very exciting to be able to have one of the world’s finest taxidermists undertake this project. It’s rare that we get the funding to do this. Since George was one of the taxidermists who accomplished the extremely difficult and spectacular restoration of our eight-ton, 32-foot whale shark -- the largest example of fish taxidermy in the world -- we naturally asked him if he would restore the Stoll Wing specimens.” The species -- from the American Northwest, Canada and Africa -include a zebra, blue wildebeest, caribou, sika

deer, black bear, moose, wapiti (a type of elk), bighorned sheep and a male and female Arctic walrus. The restoration work will be completed in two to three months. During George Dante’s visit to the Vanderbilt, he returned a rare Galápagos marine iguana to Mr. Vanderbilt’s original Habitat Room. The iguana’s return is an interesting footnote in the history of the Vanderbilt Museum. In the 1920s, Mr. Vanderbilt hired specialists from the American Museum of Natural History to create his Habitat Room, and they inserted his iguana into a diorama of Galápagos wildlife. Today, the Galápagos marine iguana is protected and cannot be collected. So, when the American Museum of Natural History needed a Galápagos marine iguana for one of its own dioramas, they asked Dante to borrow the Vanderbilt’s iguana, and he made a cast of it for the museum’s exhibit.

In celebration of Making A Difference Day, more than 150 students and families from the Three Village Central School District participated in Setauket Elementary School’s first Bink-a-Thon. The event, coordinated by the school’s PTA and Principal Dr. Nathalie Lilavois, called for attendees to make

blankets (aka “binkies”) for the Pediatric Oncology Department at Stony Brook University Hospital. While some blankets were hand- or machinequilted, the majority were no-sew fleece pieces. Using donated items, the volunteers fashioned many colorful blankets which are certain to provide warmth and comfort to those in

need. The community event was organized through the Binky Patrol, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to making and delivering homemade blankets to children and teens in need of comfort. Dr. Lilavois is the area coordinator of the Suffolk County Binky Patrol chapter.

Throughout the month of October, Minnesauke Elementary School students and staff members participated in a different c h a r a c t e r- b u i l d i n g activity each school day to reinforce the importance of becoming STARS – sharing, trustworthy, accepting, respectful and

serving. During Red Ribbon Week, the school focused on making healthy life choices. Students and staff also emphasized caring for others through the organization of a pajama drive. As part of this schoolwide effort, more than 90 new

pajamas were collected and donated to the Scholastic Books’ Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive. For each pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic Books will provide a book for the recipient. The program was organized by the school’s PBIS committee.

The Age Of Innocence By: Jamie Lynn Ryan To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) held its Champions of Children luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on October 18th. The event paid tribute to two Long Island champions: Ken Rosenblum, associate dean for administration and

director of the Veterans’ and Service Members’ Rights Clinic at Touro Law Center, and Dr. Shaun L. McKay, president of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC). “We are grateful to all our luncheon attendees. The proceeds from this event help support our

Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff members helped promote the importance of making healthy life choices as they celebrated Red Ribbon Week this October. The weeklong celebration included several theme days – including “Rally Together Against Bad

Setauket Elementary School jumpstarted its character education program, Setauket ROCKS!, this fall with a funfilled assembly program focused on the overarching messages of the initiative. To help promote positive behavior and support the implementation of the Setauket ROCKS behavior matrix, select fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade students participated in a “Family Feud” themed program developed by the building’s PBIS committee. During the assembly, the school’s stage was transformed to look like the set of the familiar

game show. Participating students worked in two teams to answer questions about what it means to be responsible, open-minded, cooperative, kind and safe. As part of the Setauket ROCKS! program, students are recognized throughout the year for their positive choices during weekly schoolwide announcements. Christmas Toy Drive Mangano Funeral Home, announced today that it is kicking off a toy drive aimed at collecting toys for Long Island’s children. Toys collected in conjunction with City on a Hill Community Church will directly benefit underprivileged children on Long Island this holiday season. As you are aware, some children will feel left out and wonder if they too will experience the joy of Christmas. The faces of all children should light up on Christmas morning. The purpose of this project is to open our hearts to those children in our community

who could not otherwise have a special Christmas celebration. “There is nothing better than watching children open their gifts on Christmas morning,” states Sal F. Making Magic Earl L. Vandermeulen High School cross-country standout James Burke placed first overall in the boys 1A Varsity division race at the 19th Annual Disney Cross Country Classic. The competition, presented by New Balance, was held at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on October 11th. Burke, a junior, posted

a time of 16:15.26 in the national meet that included 169 runners. Burke is the first student-athlete to win the championship in Port Jefferson Royals history. Teammates John Albinson, Justin Julich, Matthew Keresztes, Noah Kirchner, Alden Mohacsi, and Parker Schoch came in second place overall in the team

The Port Jefferson School District is proud to announce that Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Noah Davis has been named a semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Foundation Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Prior to his entry into the competition, Noah participated in an intensive, sevenweek Garcia Materials Research Science and Engineering Center precollege program at Stony Brook University. He joined other gifted high school students from all over the country for an experience that combined formal learning instruction with independent research. Participants were also given the opportunity to design original research projects with guidance from the Garcia Center’s faculty, students and staff. After hearing about the Garcia program from a family member, Noah took it upon himself to apply for a summer of science. “I couldn’t pass up such a wonderful opportunity and am grateful that I didn’t,” he said. “It opened up my eyes and has really encouraged me to pursue a career in engineering.” During this time, Noah met and teamed up with two Long Island high school seniors and began a deeper

exploration into the realm of energy. More specifically, the students began experimenting with various ways to maximize the potential of solar cells used to create clean energy. “Presently, organic solar cells are comprised of

expensive polymers and are inefficient,” said Noah. “The reason for this is because much of the energy is lost in the production process. Our research sought to optimize the process by organizing the structure of the solar device in order to improve its efficiency. We hypothesized that by organizing the structure and increasing the area where

electrons can be generated, efficiency can be improved.” A few hundred hours of dedicated, hard work by the driven trio resulted in the production of a 20-page research paper that detailed their initiative, hypothesis and procedure and included an abstract appropriate for the nonscientific community. The group entered their submission for the 2013 Siemens Foundation Competition in early September. Noah was named one of 331 semifinalists who were selected from a record 2,440 students registered for this year’s competition. His group project was one of 1,599 submitted for consideration. Projects were judged based upon criteria including field knowledge, comprehensiveness, interpretation, literature review, scientific importance, future work, clarity of expression, presentation and teamwork. “What Noah and his colleagues have accomplished is tremendous and I look forward to seeing what great things he will do next,” said Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy. “I will definitely be participating in the Siemens competition again,” added Noah, who also plans to continue research and development on the solar energy project. “I think my group has created the foundation for something great.”

Third-grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School have been getting in touch with their inner journalist as part of a current events project. With the help of teachers Jackie Gandolfo and Nancy Winkler-Brogan, the group was able to Skype with Kathy Leon, an anchor for SNN Local News, based out of Sarasota, Fla., who offered advice to the young reporters. Prior to the Skype session, students viewed a 15-minute DVD created by Leon and personalized for the Port Jefferson students. The video offered a tour of a SNN newsroom, a sneak peek behind the scenes of a news set, a viewing of a control room and a special greeting from the station’s producers. Afterwards, the students generated questions to ask Leon during their video chat. “The news never stops,” said Leon, who writes and reports on 60-75 stories over the course of a single day. “It’s important to make sure that you always answer the ‘who, what, where, when, why and how’ in

a story.” Leon detailed her daily activities on the job, keep your viewers engaged and coming back, then you’re explained the difference between news anchors and doing it right. It’s also important to make certain that reporters, the various genres of news and shared how she your story is impartial and includes only the facts. Musicians Attend Masterclass Following a highly selective audition process, three students from the Three Village Central School District have been chosen to participate in a masterclass with worldrenowned concert violinist Midori. Talented studentmusicians Kathryn Leung from R.C. Murphy Junior High School as well as Martin Vaillancourt and Jake Vincel from Ward Melville High School will have the opportunity to learn from Midori during this program on November

10th at the Staller Center Recital Hall. In addition to the three selected for the masterclass, Ward Melville students Devin Cowan, Ariel Leong, Tommy Li, and Elizabeth Merrifield were invited to audition for the program. Elizabeth was named a first runnerup and Devin was selected as a second runner-up. The audition process began last June, when students had to submit a portfolio of their achievements as well as letters of recommendation

from their private and school conductors. Applying students were required to have achieved perfect scores on their New York State School Music Association level 6 solos (the highest level of competition) for three consecutive years. The second round of the selection process called for the students to audition in front of a panel of professors and musicians from the university by performing their most advanced piece from memory.

The students’ video, “Slave Quilt Meanings,” was created and edited at the end of last year during Technology Club with the help of Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School teacher Laurie Varriale. The video was created as part of a larger project that

involved all Technology Club students researching and sharing findings about the Civil War via scannable QR codes. A copy of the video is posted in Next Vista’s video library.
