A flashlight is an invaluable part of any disaster preparedness kit, and it's a handy tool to have on hand in a car, at home or when traveling. You never know when you might need a flashlight, and it's helpful to have many on hand. When stocking up on flashlights for emergency kits, choose ones with light-emitting diode, or LED, technology. According to Popular Mechanics, LED flashlights are 70 percent more efficient than incandescent models. That means the batteries powering the light have the potential to last 10 times longer. Furthermore, LEDs do not have any fragile parts like incandescent bulbs. That makes them more likely to withstand shock or even endure being dropped.

In response to the ongoing pandemic, students enrolled in The Stony Brook School’s Engineering and Innovation class have been working together to create ways to help stop the spread of COVID-19. The primary project students are working on involves using UV-C light—the most energetic and damaging of ultraviolet lights—to safely destroy the virus. In order to do this in a way that does not expose anyone to harmfully powerful light, STEM Director Dr. Gene Murphy and his students came up with a realistic solution. The month of November is a special time for the nation’s veterans. While Memorial Day honors fallen soldiers and service people, Veteran’s Day, which takes place each November, is an opportunity to commemorate the efforts of all who have been in the armed forces, with a special emphasis on living veterans. While people are encouraged to thank veterans throughout the year, Veteran’s Day is a particularly poignant time to show your appreciation for the men and women of the military. Veteran’s Day takes place on November 11 and marks an important moment in history. On November 11, 1918, World War I, known at the time as “The Great War,” unofficially ended when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, took place between Germany and the Allied nations on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. World

War I ended on paper when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Armistice Day became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. However, after subsequent wars, including World War II and the Korean War, veterans’ service organizations lobbied for Armistice Day to be revised so it would be more inclusive of all veterans. On June 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to strike the word “Armistice” from the holiday’s name in favor of “Veterans.” Since then, November 11 has been known as “Veterans Day” and has honored veterans of all wars. Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October for roughly seven years under the Uniform

Monday Holiday Act, which sought to ensure threeday weekends for federal employees by celebrating certain national holidays on Mondays, but since November 11 bore such significance, many states disapproved and continued to observe the holiday on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed legislation to return the observation of Veterans Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Should the day fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively, according to History.com. The United States isn’t the only country to celebrate its veterans. Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and France also commemorate the veterans of World War I and II on or near November 11 as Remembrance Day or Remembrance Sunday.

According to research and careful calculations, the UV-C light should be able to destroy the virus’ chemical makeup. “Students have been working tirelessly to complete this project,” said Dr. Murphy. “Many of the roadblocks they’ve encountered have been discouraging, but they’re learning that there’s always a solution if you keep on trying.” Once the project is complete, the school hopes to install the system in one of the building’s HVAC

systems, thus lowering the potential contraction of the virus by sterilizing the circulating air. “The ability to put the engineering skills we’ve learned to use and see it come to fruition is incredible,” said junior Cole Spier. “It makes me feel like I can do anything if I really put my mind to it.” In addition to this project, students have also been working to create a standard particle filtration system, as well as a hands-free mask dispenser. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. In honor of Veteran’s Day, Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. Learning Center Holds Poster Contest Eastern Suffolk BOCES congratulates the winners of the recent Brookhaven Learning Center and Samoset at Brookhaven Learning Center poster contest. The theme of this competition was the Three Ws – Wear Your

Port Jefferson’s ‘The Morning Show’ Is Must-Watch TV After two successful seasons of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School’s “The Morning Show” and a sudden halt to production when schools closed in March, a new crew of students are eagerly participating in the broadcasting course, a collaboration with technology teacher Brian Chalmers and English teacher Michael Augello. According to Augello, the students are working to create content that is informative and

entertaining to their audience. “We try to make these stories as local as possible, but they might also incorporate a subject that is more widely relevant,” he said. The students are learning to frame their interview questions in a way that gives their subject room to discuss and explain — a more ﬂowing, conversational interview, not just simple yes or no answers. The students are also developing organizational and public-

speaking skills as anchors. On the technical side, they are learning how to shoot and edit their stories, which includes setting up a shot with proper lighting, arranging and connecting microphones, framing the subject within the shot and editing during postproduction. Chalmers is also teaching them how to manage and operate cameras, the control room, the teleprompter and other equipment necessary in producing the show.

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty

surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.
