The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed forty-six recruits from Class 15-155 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Friday, October 30th. As recent students of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated the Academy’s rigorous thirteen week training program. During their Academy instruction, all officer candidates are required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -

we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.

After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

However, patients don’t get a holiday vacation from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Lorie Alwes remembers her father being called often to give blood – even on holidays. He had type O negative blood, the universal blood type. “One time it was in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner and off he went without hesitation,” she recalls. “He explained to us kids that his blood was used in emergency situations and could possibly save another life.” Years later, Alwes learned that she also has type O negative blood. She has since donated whenever needed and has encouraged her 17-yearold son to carry on the lifesaving family tradition that was so important to his grandfather. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB. friendly environment. After completing the ten week transition to employment workshop, four Little Flower youth secured internships at FREE’s Saddle Rock Ranch in Middle Island, NY. The interns benefitted by gaining job readiness skills that employers look for in entry level workers such as communication, teamwork, adaptability,

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums

and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community

happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

Career Options Taking their first steps toward selecting a potential future career, R.C. Murphy Junior High School ninthgraders had the chance to learn about a wide range of professions during the building’s annual career awareness fair. The event, which was set up in the school’s

gymnasium and sponsored by the family and consumer science department, afforded students the opportunity to speak with professionals from such fields as physical therapy, architecture, counseling, science-related fields and finance in a one-on-one setting. As the students are

technically beginning their first year of high school, the fair aims to spark an interest in the career path they might be interested in pursuing in the future. In year’s past, the fair has opened doors for students to begin internships with local professionals.

Volunteerism Celebrated During their late October Board meeting, the Three Village Central School District’s administration, students and staff members gave thanks to its seven-member Board of Education, district clerk

and student representative, honoring them as part of the state-sanctioned School Board Recognition Week program. As each Board member serves as a liaison to one of the district’s schools,

representatives from each building spoke on behalf of their trustee, the district clerk and the student representative, before presenting them with a token of their school’s appreciation.

Scholarship Opportunities Suffolk Federal is now offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. With the help of computer literacy class teacher Nancy Bachety, Port Jefferson Middle School students are tapping into learning and expanding their educational resources by downloading ebooks and audiobooks from the Port Jefferson Public Library.

During a recent inschool demonstration, the students used iPads and Chromebooks to explore the local library’s online resources and endless supply of digital texts. They were assisted in this venture by Port Jefferson Public Library teen department librarians,

Eric Schaarschmidt and Andrew Bliss. Ms. Bachety noted the lesson demonstrated how these digital and local resources could be used for future research assignments and leisure reading.

Miracle League For the fifth-year in a row, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School studentathletes offered their time and friendship to the athletes of the Miracle League of Long Island on October 17th. The members of the Port Jefferson Varsity Club, as well as girls and boys basketball, soccer and

volleyball teams, served as buddies to the Miracle League athletes while they played several games of baseball. They helped them bat, provided them with tips and taught them good sportsmanship. “We are very proud of our student-athletes and the efforts they put in to ensure that the Miracle

Admissions Panel To help students prepare for the college admissions process, the Port Jefferson School District hosted a college admissions panel at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School on October 21st. During the event, admissions representatives from Fordham University, Queens College, Suffolk County Community

College and SUNY Stony Brook discussed various aspects of the college preparation and application process. The panel focused on such things as the college essay, submission of the application, the college visit, college entrance exams and academic credentials. The panel was held in

conjunction with a range of other college preparation initiatives at the high school, including a minicollege fair and the release of a new district collegeplanning handbook. The handbook provides foundational information on postsecondary planning for students and families.

Outstanding Donation

Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico and fellow board members recently paid special tribute to Aiden and Lillian Berdinka of Manorville, who since 2009, have unselfishly donated 300 pounds of Halloween candy, from their own personal collection, to military servicemen and women overseas. The initiative began when their mother, Holly, was diagnosed with colon cancer and wanted to

pay forward the kindness her family received that Halloween. She encouraged her children to donate some of their candy, which they did willingly. Since then, the children have enlisted the help of family, friends, classmates and local organizations, which have all contributed to the impressive amount of candy that has been shipped to military troops. The Berdinkas plan to continue this tradition, they say, until there are no

more troops fighting. Councilman Panico and board members presented Aiden and Lillian with Certificates of Appreciation, as well as a Proclamation naming Thursday, October 29th as Berdinka Family Day in the Town of Brookhaven. Councilman Panico also presented the children with a bucket of Halloween candy to be used towards the cause.

SAFE TREATS - All manner of goblins, ghouls, princesses and super heroes roamed the halls of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community last week for the Tenth Annual Safe Treats event. Close to 120 students from nearby Setauket Elementary School donned their costumes and visited assisted living and skilled nursing residents of the Vincent Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, receiving smiles and sweet treats in equal measure. The candy was donated by staff and the families of residents. The excess candy will be sent to members of the military overseas.

Ward Melville High School celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month this fall through a series of interactive and culturally rich activities. To celebrate and share the love of the Hispanic cultures, students of all levels of study were invited to participate in a “Culture Fair.” The event involved the full foreign language department and approximately 60 students, who prepared presentations about different topics of

interest from the Hispanic world. Some of the topics included: Cinco de Mayo, Day of the Dead, Travel in Latin America, Poets of Mexico, Etiquette in Spain, Painters, Sonia Sotomayor, as well as Mate and its origins. Students showcased their research on the subject studied through posters and/or PowerPoints before speaking to a panel of judges about their knowledge of the subject. The event was very well

received and students asked that it be repeated. Additionally, students were able to enjoy traditional foods and culture of the regions when they visited the Pollo Rico restaurant in Centereach for a traditional lunch and a history of dance and lesson. In total, 37 students attended and all were on the dance floor during the visit to learn how to merengue, salsa and tango.

and teachers. Through his fundraiser, Bonlarron raised $250, which he donated to his school’s Paint Port Pink hourglass collection. At the end of the October fundraiser, all of the hourglass money will be

donated to the hospital’s cause. Bonlarron said he decided to start his own fundraiser because he wanted to do something special in honor of his late grandmother.

Helping each student be his or her best is about instilling self-confidence, grit, and determination. Dr. Sheehan offered direct advice and provided teachers a web site to use as an ongoing resource to help them create a culture of hope in every classroom. Dr. Lina Gilic reminded teachers of their responsibility to differentiate their teaching based of the specific needs of each student in their classroom with an emphasis on helping those with special learning needs

in a presentation titled Identifying What is Special in the Catholic School Classroom. Teachers and Principals also were addressed by the new Superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Walsh, they visited with vendors of educational products and services, and they got the opportunity to sit and talk with their fellow teachers. Ultimately the goal is to help the staff at each school further develop and deliver the special characteristics that make Catholic school different and better.

Although they did not earn the title of World Series Champions, the New York Mets were the recipients of an overwhelming amount of support from students and staff throughout the Three Village Central School District community as completed in the MLB’s highest level of competition.

As part of a fundraiser organized by Minnesauke Elementary School student Mia Butkevich and her brother, Jake, who attends P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, the town and many schools displayed large orange and blue ribbons in support of hometown Met Steven Matz. Donations from the purchased ribbons went to

support Strike Out Cancer Foundation. Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff were repeatedly seen wearing their favorite Mets apparel throughout the series and many classes created letters, signs and posters for Matz, a graduate of the school.

Icons of Freedom As part of a lesson in their government class, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School seniors had the opportunity to take part in the Icons of Freedom Conference held recently at Stony Brook University. During the conference, the Port Jefferson students learned more about historical Supreme Court cases and met several

individuals involved in the cases, including Mary Beth Tinker, an American free speech activist, involved in the 1969 case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent School District. Students also heard from civil rights activist Fred Korematsu, the central figure in the 1944 Korematsu v. the United States case, where the Supreme Court

ruled that the wartime internment of American citizens of Japanese descent was constitutional. “I love history and interacting with Ms. Tinker and Mr. Korematsu was a great experience,” said Karin Thomassen, a senior, who participated in the conference.

Three Earl L. Vandermeulen High School varsity girls tennis team athletes competed at the Suffolk County tennis individual championships, held on October 17th at William Floyd High School in Shirley. The students earned their way into the competition after defeating

In his most recent role as Roslyn’s director of physical education, health, intramurals, athletics and recreation Mr. Melore oversaw the entire health and physical education department, fostered collaborations with community groups and organized the robust secondary athletic schedules and staff. There he also implemented several initiatives, including a leadership training program for athletes and a CPR certification program in health classes. Throughout his professional tenure, Mr. Melore has also worked as a coach at both the high school and middle school level. In the role of head varsity football coach he guided Smithtown High

School East to the Big Four Champions in 2012 and 2014, as well as the playoffs in 2013. He had similar success when the assistant varsity football coach at Farmingdale High School, during which he accumulated eleven Big Four championships, ten finals showings, five county championships, one Long Island championship, one Rutgers Cup trophy and was named the 2007 Nassau County Assistant Coach of the Year award. Mr. Melore earned his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education degree from SUNY Cortland, Master of Arts in Physical Education from Adelphi University and Educational Leadership Program certificate from Dowling College. To further the agency’s efforts, ADRC has provided informative palm cards to help officers on patrol determine whether a person they’ve located is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office has since provided these cards to other law enforcement agencies on Long Island. “When we do these presentations with the Sheriff’s Office, they always request the palm card,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “They use them extensively, and so do we.” This relationship began in March when ADRC invited representatives from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to participate in ADRC’s

Annual Education Conference & Expo. Subsequent to the Conference, Joan Motley, Outreach Coordinator for ADRC, invited the Sheriff’s representatives to speak at ADRC’s Caregiver Support Groups. The Sheriff’s Office conducted six presentations at ADRC’s caregiver support groups, which resulted in many families enrolling their loved ones in the program. ADRC has offered a courtesy table to the Sheriff’s Office at the West End Walk, which was held in August, where attendees learned about the importance of the Project Lifesaver program. The Sheriff’s Office has also been invited to attend ADRC’s East End Walk in October and will collaborate with ADRC in several speaking engagements that are on ADRC’s calendar for the remainder of 2015.

“ADRC is well-known as the regional leader of care, support services and education programs for families battling Alzheimer’s disease,” says Officer Bryan Stoothoff, Aide to Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. “Joan and Mary Ann are extremely receptive to our program, as they recognize the extreme need for incorporating Project Lifesaver throughout agencies in Suffolk County.” Using the ADRC informative palm card in conjunction with their training, law enforcement personnel can quickly retrieve a wandering individual — something that would otherwise take hours. The cards have also been distributed at senior health/information fairs. “A big misconception law enforcement often makes in dealing with someone with Alzheimer’s disease
