Meet the Reboli Center’s November Artisan: Woodworker Carl Siegel

The Reboli Center of Art & History is pleased to introduce Carl Siegel, a woodworker from Port Jefferson as its November Artisan. An English teacher at Port Jefferson High School during the day, while at night, he taught himself how to create pieces of furniture for his new home. According to Siegel, “I started woodworking in 1969, when I moved to Long Island. When I ﬁrst began, I only had a hammer, screw driver and pliers, subsequently adding tools as each project required. I

was always impressed with the work of earlier cabinet makers, and over the years acquired as many old hand tools as I could to use in reproducing Colonial, Chippendale and Queen Anne furniture.” Since he retired from teaching in 1992, he has focused on smaller projects, such as chess boards and sets, antique automobiles, railroad cars, small tables and animals. Lois Reboli, a founder of the Reboli Center said, “We are happy to exhibit his work and share his talent with our visitors.

His pieces are amazing and so beautiful to look at. His work will be on display during the month of November, and I encourage everyone to stop by and see his wonderful creations and maybe get some ideas for gifts for the holidays.” The Reboli Center is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook, and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11am to 5pm and on Sunday 1pm to 5pm. CHAMBER ORCHESTRA SELECTED TO PERFORM AT ALL-STATE - Ward Melville High School’s chamber orchestra has been selected to perform at the New York All-State Music Conference in Rochester in December. The orchestra was selected based on their submission of music that was adjudicated by the All-State review board and their resume of contest and competition pieces performed last year. The group will perform during the event on Dec. 3, 2021. The public is invited to hear the group prior to the All-State conference on Nov. 23, at 7:30 p.m., at the Greek Church of the Assumption. BMX Show Encourages Positive Choices

Energy, action and encouragement for responsible choices were the name of the game when the Dialed Action Sports Team put on an outdoor show for Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in Rocky Point. The educational choreographed school assembly wowed the

students with BMX backﬂips, 360s, no handers and more while providing powerful messages about acceptance, antibullying, healthy lifestyles and seeking positive role models. They also discussed the importance of wearing safety equipment, especially a helmet, whenever on a bike or

other recreational vehicles such as hovercrafts and scooters. The Rocky Point School District thanks the PTA for bringing this exciting event to JAE students to reinforce the goal of hard work and dedication to fulﬁll any dreams that they desire.

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from ﬁnding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outﬁtted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofﬁcial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.

This award signiﬁes Mr. Acritelli’s numerous contributions in support of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the many memorials, tributes and ceremonies he is instrumental in organizing for local veterans, according to Rocky Point High School Principal Mr. Jonathan Hart.

Mr. Hart further commended Mr. Acritelli’s efforts by noting his countless hours fundraising to further promote the school’s Wall of Honor as well as planning and preparing for the impactful ceremonies he spearheads for 9/11 and Veterans Day. “In addition to Rich’s individual recognition, our building was recognized on the state level by the VFW for the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award,” Mr. Hart said as he also commended the many staff members who contribute to Mr. Acritelli’s efforts in raising money and planning events. “This is an outstanding achievement for both Mr. Acritelli and our building.”
