Marathon a Success County’s south shore, starting and ending on Montauk Highway in downtown Patchogue, and took runners through Blue Point, Bayport, downtown Sayville, Oakdale – including the former St. John’s University campus (now Amity Education Group) and past the historic Bourne Mansion, New York State’s Heckscher State Park and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. “We want to continue to make this event a destination marathon while highlighting our downtowns and our wonderful assets along the south shore,” added County Executive Bellone. “In addition to reversing the course, we worked with our local chambers of commerce and local business leaders to organize various events in order to enhance the experience for our spectators and visitors.” The 2016 Suffolk County Marathon was the third marathon County Executive Bellone ran, previously running in the 2014 New York City Marathon and 2015 Suffolk County Marathon. The County Executive’s participation was inspired by his commitment to live

a healthier lifestyle, which includes a 69 pound weight loss since 2013. The FreedomFest: Taste of Long Island Festival was also held in down Patchogue park in conjunction with the marathon, half marathon and 5k race to highlight the region’s local businesses, such as local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local eateries and produce. The Taste of Long Island Festival was made possible with the support and partnership of New York State, the Village of Patchogue, the Long Island Wine Council, the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and the nonprofit veterans’ organization Project9Line. In addition, through the efforts of Jayson Velez of the Jay Scott Band and Patrick Donohue, founder of Project9Line, more than 20 local bands and musicians performed throughout the event across three stages. The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon additionally is part of the 2016 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series, a series of local races throughout the

Scholarships Available Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2017, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the

LIHS promotes the study of horiculture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these scholarships can find additional information and

an application on the LIHS website at www.lihort. org. Applications will be accepted until March 1st, 2017. The LIHS meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and

tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all Long Island gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that more than 3,000 runners from 26 states, the District of Columbia and six countries participated in the Catholic Health Services’ 2nd Annual Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon to Support Our Veterans. All net proceeds generated from the event will go directly to veteran service organizations in Suffolk County. The male and female winner of the full marathon were: Mark Maggi, Cohasset, MA – 2:48:08.43; Pam O’Sullivan, Nashua, NH – 2:58:45.93 The male and female winner of the half marathon were: Ben Jacobs, Minnetonka, MN – 1:12:37.32; Leonora Petrina, Bayport, NY – 1:17:23.28 The male and female winner of the 5k: Peter Argerakis, Blue Point, NY – 17:40.10; Mckenna Mazeski, Aurora, CO – 19:23.45 The winner of the wheelchair division: Mark Braun, Mounds View, MN – 1:02:30.00 The male and female winner of the Half Marathon National and International Championship for the

Walking to Save Lives Port Jefferson School District students stepped up to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention through an Out of the Darkness Walk, held at

Jones Beach on October 23rd. More than 40 students participated in the walk under the banner of Team Dylan, in memory of Port Jefferson student Dylan

Berger. They raised $4,565 through sponsorships, T-shirt and bake sales. “We had a tremendous show of support,” said Principal Christine Austin.

Hispanic Excellence Two Earl L. Vandermeulen High School juniors in the Port Jefferson School District have earned academic excellence awards as part of

the Town of Brookhaven’s third annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. The students, Raquel Accardo and Nick Andriani, were recognized at a

ceremony on October 7th at Brookhaven Town Hall for earning grade point averages of 92.09 and 95.57, respectively.

program. The students raised the funds through in-school sales of pink Frisbees, pencils, boas and shoelaces. They also sold rocks to

decorate during their lunch periods. To raise additional awareness about breast cancer, the students decorated classroom doors in pink.

Raising Awareness

Rocky Point High School students and staff joined together this October to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research during several successful initiatives. During a pink hair extension fundraiser, students enrolled in the building’s cosmetology program attached long, colorful extensions to contributing volunteers’ hair. The extensions came in a variety of pink hues and were on sale for $10

a piece. As a result of the school’s generosity, the classes raised nearly $200 for the Walk for Beauty. The building’s studentathletes also got in on the cause. The junior varsity and varsity girls’ soccer teams hosted Kick for Cancer games in midOctober. During the games, the team wore special shirts, played with pink soccer balls and displayed banners honoring and remembering people affected by cancer. The

program made a donation of $750 to support breast cancer research. The girls’ volleyball team once again hosted a Dig Pink fundraiser, which featured raffles and prizes collected and donated by local businesses and families. The entire gym was blanketed in pink decorations and many volunteers helped to sell raffle tickets and tasty treats. Authentic Explorations Briar Nature Center in Smithtown and a park in Kenya, Africa. They learned how she had used a “camera trap” procedure for collecting images from stationary locations in both locations to gather information about animals living in the areas. The trap collects a series of repetitive images over a short period of time once the attached sensors detect movement.

Once understanding the process, the students then worked on their observation and inference skills by examining the evidence collected and recorded data from the pictures. The students took note of such findings as the phase of the moon, number and type of animals present, as well as the perceived temperature.

Seventh-grade students at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District will be learning about a variety of technology concepts this year, including centripetal forces, gravity, inertia and momentum, during their technology class.

As a kickoff to their studies they had the opportunity to see these topics in action as their teachers used a giant catapult, called a trebuchet, to launch pumpkins high into the air. During the daylong launching event, students in all grades saw

the trebuchet in action and learned about the concepts in motion. During the month of November, the seventhgrade students will build miniature trebuchets and test their launching capabilities using small pieces of clay.

No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

After years of activism and research by the Cumsewogue Historical Society and financial support by way of open space funding, Brookhaven residents can enjoy the half mile oval track once known as the Gentlemen’s Driving Park, a Victorian era race track that rounded out the Grand Circuit of harness racing tracks on the east coast. It was written up in newspapers near and far in its heyday and was a member of the National Trotting Association. This family-friendly Opening Day event on October 15th, drew over a hundred residents who enjoyed a walking tour of the track by Jack Smith, President of the Cumsewogue Historical Society, Kathy Springer’s open carriage pulled by miniature donkeys and Mary Doherty’s double registered American Paint Gelding, a series of classic Currier and Ives prints

supplied by the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame from Goshen, NY, and refreshments courtesy of the Nassau-Suffolk Horseman’s Association and President Lisa Quinn. Port Jefferson Station, formally known as Echo, was named so because of the bay gelding of the same name, a revered local trotter, owned by local Captain Nathaniel Dickerson. The track, later known as the Herman Floyd race track, is the last of its kind on Long Island. “There is tremendous value in having this open space designated in our community,” stated Councilwoman Cartright. “I am thrilled to have helped secure this park for the Port Jefferson Station community and the enjoyment of all Brookhaven Town residents,” said Councilwoman Cartright. “This could not have happened without the hard

work of my predecessor, Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld.” “I am happy to have played a part in securing this unique piece of Long Island’s equestrian history. On October 25th at Brookhaven Town Hall, Councilman Michael A. Loguercio, Jr. and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau sponsored a NARCAN Training Program, the third in a series of programs on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. “As Town Board Liaison to the Brookhaven Youth Bureau, I want to thank the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office for providing free drug testing kits and everyone who participated in such an important event that can help save lives,” said Councilman Loguercio. “As someone who attended the Youth

Bureau’s first NARCAN Training Program in June, I personally have been trained in how to administer this medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. This epidemic has an effect on so many people and sadly, the statistic is that Suffolk County has more deaths from heroin overdoses than any other county in New York State. We need to continue working together to help provide ways to combat this horrible epidemic.” During the program, employees from Suffolk County EMS explained how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an overdose and how to administer Nasal NARCAN. They also

explained what to do until EMS services arrive. After the training, those who participated received a NARCAN kit. Approximately 200 residents have attended the two NARCAN Training Programs held by the Town in the last five months. In July, the Town held a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education, Prevention and Awareness Program, highlighting the current heroin epidemic facing our community. Civilian Programs Want to help your neighbors and your community? The Auxiliary Police Officer training program and the Civilian Police Academy are both open to adult Suffolk County residents. The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Officer training program is available to residents of Suffolk County at least 21 years of age. The Auxiliary Police are volunteers who provide support to the Suffolk County Police Department and serve as the “eyes and ears” of the department while patrolling. Candidates
