Rocky Point High School junior Maya Alexander was selected to participate in the 2023 New York State School Music Association’s All-State Mixed Chorus. Additionally, Rocky Point seniors Elyse Nadeau and Renee Ortiz were selected as alternates for this prestigious performing ensemble. Maya was selected for the Soprano 2 section, and Elyse and Rene are both alternates for the Alto 1 section. Maya is a soprano in the

Rocky Point High School Chorus, and she will perform with the NYSSMA All-State Mixed Chorus during the New York State School Music Association Winter Conference from Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 in Rochester. “I am so incredibly proud of Maya, Elyse and Renee,” high school chorus teacher Jessica Spitz said. “All three of them have worked very hard to prepare their NYSSMA solos, not only last spring, but also in

years past. Additionally, they are outstanding leaders in chorus and their other performing groups. They are such a joy to work with every day. This is such a well-deserved honor for them.” Spitz will also attend the NYSSMA Winter Conference for the various professional development workshops offered, and to observe the rehearsals and attend the All-State Mixed Choir concert.

Rocky Point Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Students in Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in numerous ways. Erin DeMarco and Julianne Warren’s second

grade class worked on a special project by researching a wellknown Hispanic person and completed a flag on interesting things they learned about their person.

Students then presented their flag to the class and went on a museum walk of each flag. They discovered and recorded facts about different people and made connections.

District ‘Goes Gold’ For The Daniela Conte Foundation Student athletes in the Comsewogue School District raised over $680 through the month of September to support the Dix Hills-based Daniela Conte Foundation, a nonprofit that raises awareness of childhood cancer and provides financial support to local families of children battling cancer. “Our athletic teams united as one to support this great cause,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “It’s humbling to see our students work together to champion a local organization that is having such a positive impact.” Teams unified by sporting gold shoelaces and distributed pairs to all who donated at least five

The Daniela Conte Foundation is a Dix Hillsbased nonprofit launched in memory of Daniela Conte, who passed away in March 2020 at eight years old from a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. She fought for four years, during which she touched countless lives. Her parents Anthony and Katia started the Daniela Conte Foundation to help other families of children with cancer across Long Island and in New York City. The organization’s mission is to provide these families with financial assistance, raise awareness of pediatric cancer and fund research for a cure for Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Tenzin, his brother Paxton and his mother Colleen joined the Comsewogue School District this September. Tenzin is currently undergoing chemotherapy, which he

Despite challenging weather conditions, more than 50 vendors, including crafts people, local businesses and Community agencies braved the

Overall, the event provided a wonderful venue to network, educate and spread the word about community services, and working together towards common community concerns focused on students and their families. One example of this is the 65 Narcan kits that were handed out by the Suffolk

County Police Department and their training of at least 100 individuals. These kits save lives. All in the name of fun for a cause, all proceeds benefit Sunshine’s Fall programs and holiday assistance programs. In addition, the monies collected and donated to the event go to specific programs offered

through this important non-profit organization. These include newly formed evening programs focused on students and their families. The monthly parent support/educational workshop series will present a different topic run by different professionals.

Event Will Include A Half-Mile Walk-Through Extravaganza Featuring Holiday -Themed Light Displays, Pictures With Santa Claus, And Delicious Snacks

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently announced that the 2023 annual Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will now be located at Southaven County Park in Yaphank from November 25th to December 30th. This year, the light show will be a fully immersive, walk-through Enchanted Forest, which features 80 illuminated holiday-themed displays—including five that were designed by award-winning Girl Scouts.

Adding to the camaraderie, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have also arranged photos with Santa, picnics with s’mores, music, and games for visitors to enjoy. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long Island, the seasonal event serves as an essential fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering

Early bird tickets go on sale October 1st. “This year’s Holiday Light Show event promises to be more engaging and interactive than ever before,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County President and CEO. “Making the event a walk-through this year enables us to bring in more light displays and create a more personalized, magical holiday experience. Alongside the mesmerizing

light displays, families can enjoy delightful activities, including photos with Santa Claus, festive snacks, games, and more. We are dedicated to creating a joyous atmosphere that fosters togetherness and creates cherished memories for everyone.” This is the 20th anniversary of the annual Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show, which had been previously located at Smith Point County Park as a drivethrough event since 2016, when it outgrew the site at Camp Edey in Bayport. Last year was the first year the Girl Scouts offered a walkthrough holiday village as part of the annual light show extravaganza, which received rave reviews and overwhelming demand to be brought back that Girl Scouts of Suffolk County expanded it by five times. Each year, the event attracts more than 50,000 visitors from throughout Long Island, Queens, Westchester and even out of state. This year, there will be 80 light displays ranging from 50 to 200 feet. The dazzling holiday light

displays are assembled and built in part by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs and provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program. Last year, more than 40 Suffolk County Girls were able to attend Girl Scouts summer camp this year thanks to scholarships funded by the 2022 Holiday Light Show proceeds. “The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County take great pride in putting together this event each year,” said Severino. “It’s a unique program as it spreads holiday joy, but it also enables us to offer girls opportunities that can shape their futures in remarkable ways. Every ticket sold directly contributes to our mission of nurturing confident, capable, and compassionate leaders

of tomorrow. We thank everyone for their support and hope to see you at the Light Show this holiday season.” The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will run Thursdays through Sundays from Saturday, November 25th through Saturday, December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. of their day, many specialneeds individuals perform a range of tasks for not-forprofits that help to keep the doors open and the milk of

human kindness flowing. According to the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps survey, volunteer participation was

at 23.2 percent, a drop of 7 percent between 2019 and 2021 – the largest decrease the survey has seen since its 2002 inception. Special-needs individuals step in to do the most basic tasks to more intricate things such as data entry, interacting with donors and computer and office tasks. “Our clients make the decision about which organizations they’d like to volunteer with,” says Christina Abbinanti of Life’s WORC in Garden City. She said that clients participate as part of the Program Without Walls that allows special-needs individuals to integrate into the community. The clients volunteer at a range of organizations throughout the week. “They also learn valuable job and interpersonal skills.” At Hair We Share on Long Island, special-needs volunteers keep the doors

open and allow the allvolunteer organization to continue to provide free, hand-laced wigs to medical patients. The wigs, which average $4,000 each, are custom fitted to patients. “Volunteers are our life blood,” says co-founder Dean Riskin. “We have no paid staff. We have seventyfive-thousand ponytails we are sitting on that need to be sorted, weighed and bagged and we couldn’t do it without them.” In addition to getting a warm feeling about helping, special-needs volunteers hone important work and

social skills that help them when they apply for jobs. Leaves Can Stain Exterior Surfaces Leaves that fall from trees can be a marvel to behold, but leaves can stain exterior surfaces when they eventually settle on vehicles, concrete driveways, patios, and other surfaces, become wet and/or are not cleaned away in a timely fashion. Leaf stains are caused by tannins in the leaves.

The pigments can be absorbed by porous materials like concrete and leave stains behind. While these stains may wash away over time, homeowners may prefer a faster way to get rid of unsightly stains. To remove moderate leaf stains, mix oxygen bleach with hot water and apply to stains

using a scrub brush. Dark stains may require a tougher cleanser, such as one that contains trisodium phosphate. Some homeowners find success using a pressure washer to clean away leaf stains, while others rely on commercial leaf-stain removers.
