Serving to protect the freedom of the seas, the Navy is another branch of the military that reports directly to the Department of Defense. Among its many missions, the U.S. Navy serves to make the seas safe for travel and trade.
United States Air Force
The Air Force also reports directly to the Department of Defense and trains for and maintains global superiority in air, space and cyberspace. Air Force personnel fly planes, helicopters and even satellites.
United States Marine Corps
The Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy. It carries out global missions on both sea and shore, and serves as an expeditionary force. Marines are a rapid-reaction team and are usually the first boots on the ground in a conflict.
United States Coast Guard
The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.
United States Army National Guard
The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations. The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary. The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief. Dig Pink for Fundraising Efforts Rocky Point High School junior varsity and varsity girls volleyball teams recently hosted their 10th annual Dig Pink Breast Cancer Fundraiser. The entire district contributed to the success of this event and the community has embraced this event as one that defines the quality of their character. their parents continue to, year in and year out, exceed expectations. In an era where cancer permeates the airways, Rocky Point’s athletic community and beyond regularly stands united in their quest to honor those who have fallen, stand with those who are fighting and admire those who have survived. In 2018 alone, the Rocky Point School District raised more than $4,500 for the cause, bringing their 10-year total
fundraised to more than $65,000. Special thanks to visiting teams from Longwood and Amityville high schools who joined the district’s event and to all those who played a vital role in the success of the program, including parent volunteer Laura Wheeler and teachers Kelly Calamita and Maria Amoscato. The teams are coached by Conor Sussillo (varsity) and Kevin Parker (junior varsity).

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books!

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected! They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!
Musicians Perform for Educators After a thorough and extensive application process, Ward Melville High School’s honors jazz band ensemble was chosen as one of only a select few performance groups from throughout the state to showcase their talents during the New York State School Boards Association
annual conference and convention this October. During the event, the 18 student-musicians performed in the New York Ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel under the leadership of teacher Jason Chapman. In attendance were board members and administrators from across
the state, as well as New York State Commissioner for Education MaryEllen Elia. The students received praise and commendation from all after the performance of three challenging musical numbers.
Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%! If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate. Rocky Point Middle School recently praised the academic accomplishments of 51 students and proudly inducted them into the building’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. During the commemorative ceremony, Isadora Luce began with opening remarks, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Gianna Imeidopf and Amber Sanchez and a performance of the national anthem sung by Erin Ward, Ella Botticelli, Samantha Leversen and Brenna Kiernan. To explain the mission of the NJHS,
Madeline CarneySchmidt explained the candle lighting ceremony and five students explained the pillars of NJHS. Jackson Normandin explained scholarship, Eva Edery spoke about service, Isadora Luce addressed leadership, Aneesh Deshpande noted the importance of citizenship and Lilly Resciniti spoke about character. The new inductees were then guided to the stage by current ninth-grade members and led through the official induction ceremony. A v e r y Gennaro spoke about
this year’s faculty member receiving honorary status, who was eighth-grade math teacher Nicole Gabrinowitz. Honorary members are chosen by current ninth-graders based on the pillars of NJHS. “The current ninthgrade members did a superb job of welcoming in and being role models for our new 8th grade inductees,” said Dawn Callahan, NJHS adviser. “I am hopeful that our new inductees will live up to the same level as our ninth-grade members.”
Beyond Stop, Drop and Roll Minnesauke Elementary School kindergarten through second-grade students learned important safety lessons during a recent fire prevention program provided by the dedicated members of the Setauket Fire Department. Throughout the program, volunteers
reinforced the importance of having a predetermined family meeting place, the need to regularly replace smoke detector batteries and the number to call in case of an emergency. Outside the building, students were able to tour two working fire apparatuses, take an

up-close look at the firefighters’ lifesaving equipment as well as an ambulance and rescue boat. Each student was then provided with a keepsake informational goody bag, which included materials to reinforce the messages that were discussed.

Buddying Up at Mount Due to a generous donation by local Girl Scout Troop 639, W.S. Mount Elementary School students in the Three Village Central School District now have a common place to expand their social circles and find new friends. A buddy bench, which is a place for students to sit during recess when looking for a friend to
play with, was gifted to the school thanks to the talented Troop members. The idea behind the bench is that it helps to eliminate loneliness and foster friendships on the playground. The local troop members not only built the structure, but sanded and painted it, making it picture perfect for their peers. Special thanks to the following

Positivity, self-awareness and respect permeated conversations in the halls and classrooms at Ward Melville High School as students and staff came together to celebrate this year’s Patriot PRIDE Day. During the annual event, traditional classes were suspended and students were invited to participate in a series of events and workshops centered on creating a culture of kindness, compassion and
acceptance. The program began with an assembly with keynote speaker Jeff Yalden, who encouraged the students to recognize the importance of mental health and to not let obstacles get in the way of living their best life. Throughout the remainder of the day, students attended workshops with outside presenters and staff focused on lifesaving skills, hands-on activities, and
tips for overcoming anxiety and stress. With the help of Stony Brook University and the Setauket Fire District, students received training in CPR, performed in a drum circle with music teacher Jason Champman and even yoga with science teacher Marnie Kula. Additionally, one speaker – Kevin Alter – spoke about the trial PATRIOT PRIDE DAY- Ward Melville High School students took part in a drum and tribulations faced by circle with music teacher Jason Chapman during Patriot PRIDE day. United Against Bullying Schools throughout the Three Village Central School District joined together to celebrate Unity Week with a series of activities aimed at promoting acceptance, tolerance and antibullying. At Setauket Elementary School, teachers decorated classroom doors to visually display the building’s commitment to promoting unity while students and staff were provided with Unity themed T-shirts. In addition, all grade levels attended an assembly program called “Sweethearts & Heroes,” which focused
on how bullying affects individuals and how to embrace empathy and leadership to be forces of change in school and society. Fifth- and sixthgrade student council members also worked with program presenters in a breakout session to build skills and strategies for stopping bullying. They then worked to teach those younger students during small group role-playing workshops. Both R.C. Murphy Junior High School and P.J. Gelinas Junior High School welcomed a keynote speaker from the Free Hugs
Project, who spoke about breaking down barriers and accept others for their individuality. Students and staff at both buildings were also provided with commemorative Unity Day shirts, which they wore on Oct. 24, a day deemed national Unity Day by the National Bullying Prevention program. As a visual display of their commitment to the topic, Murphy students also helped to create a Unity Patch, using 40 pumpkins that each student and staff member signed and UNITED AGAINST BULLYING - R.C. Step Into Folk Dancing Music, rhythm and fun reverberated throughout Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School as students, family and staff recently came together to participate in a fun-filled evening of family folk dancing. The annual event provided the opportunity for students to bring their
parents to school, where together they participated in several folk dances led by school music teacher Craig Knapp. This multigenerational experience builds appreciation of the process of music making and community spirit. Traditional folk dancing promotes building of
community, teamwork, discipline, respect and following instructions. Folk dance has links with many other subjects, including history, literacy, art, music and physical education. The students enjoyed the event, learning valuable social skills as well as improving coordination and confidence.

When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I
landed is still burned on my brain. It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (five years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.
And if I created it once, I could create it again. Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.
