Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars. Veterans Day in October? For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this
decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11. Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty. Paying tribute There are various ways to honor veterans on Veterans Day and Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades and visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

The Problem The number of ladderrelated injuries in the United Sates increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years, says a study in an issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are
below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.
We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Thank you for anything that you can do to help rebuild our inventory in order to serve patients in our local hospitals!

There is also the Promenade of Trees competition where families and community members decorate some 60 holiday trees which stay on display for all to enjoy through January 3. The public will vote in a winner who will receive a $150 Stony Brook Village Gift Certificate, usable in all shops and restaurants. A donation of $25 must accompany the registration form. A portion of your donation will go to the Santa’s Children’s Fund which provides food and clothing for needy children and families. Club’s Environmental Efforts The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Environmental Club recently visited the Long Island Explorium in Port Jefferson village along with science teacher and adviser Mr. Jonathan Maletta. The objective was to simply help plant flowers in the rain garden but the students came away learning that a rain garden’s purpose in its specific location is to collect pollutants from run-off in the soil before it reaches the harbor and causes harmful algae blooms. The Explorium had received a grant to plant two rain gardens in Port Jefferson and its staff was grateful to the club and the CLUB’S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS - Earl L. A Lesson In Energy Conservation through December, kindergarten through sixth-grade students at 100 schools will be entertained by the show. The Conservation Caper focuses on four key takeaways and is meant to spark conversations in the classroom on energy efficiency. During the twenty-minute performance, students learn: • What energy is; • The uses of energy; • | How energy is wasted; and • Ways to conserve energy. In addition to live performances, the program includes student playbooks (print and online versions), teacher guides, e-books and digital games and activities that align with the important concepts outlined in the
live shows. PSEG Long Island sponsors every aspect of the program, making the performances and materials a cost-free supplement to lessons in science, literacy and the arts. “We sponsor these energy conservation performances because students, their teachers, and administrators have told us it’s an effective way to open the conversation about reducing energy consumption in a fun and interactive way,” said Suzanne Brienza, director of customer experience and utility marketing, PSEG Long Island. “Along with presenting the program, we offer families free energy efficiency kits and the opportunity for their schools to vie for hundreds of dollars in incentives for going greener.”
