hat to do in case of a fire, the importance of smoke detectors and the role of a firefighter were just a few of the items discussed during a recent Fire Prevention program at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School. Members of the Rocky Point Fire Department visited the building during Fire Prevention Month to speak with the building’s classes about fire safety. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed. Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum benefit from your plan. As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably be this: “How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible, you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½. Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars. (Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices, such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these: • Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k) portfolio. • Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your 401(k). • Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse with

The American Red Cross has awarded a $500,000 grant to FEGS Health and Human Services to support mental health and education services for children affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The funding will be used to help an estimated 150 children in Nassau and Suffolk counties who lost part of their academic school year due to stormrelated challenges, such as housing displacement and/or trauma caused by the storm. “FEGS is enormously appreciative of the support of the American Red Cross,” said Gail A. Magaliff, CEO of FEGS. “Children who are still struggling across Long Island will now receive academic tutoring and trauma counseling from FEGS and its partners. These funds will help us address the longterm impact of Sandy on children which can potentially be even more

The American Red Cross has awarded $2.35 million in grants to support longterm recovery services for people affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The Community Development Corporation of Long Island, LLC, a nonprofit subsidiary of Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), will receive a $2 million grant. CDCLI will use the funding to support mold remediation for homes flooded by Superstorm Sandy. The organization expects to provide services to 325 households beginning this month and continuing for the next 12 months. “We are grateful to the American Red Cross for their generous commitment, which will enable CDCLI to expand its mold remediation services to assist residents across Long Island who were impacted by Superstorm Sandy,” said Marianne Garvin, President/ CEO of Community

Scholars Honored Twenty-seven Rocky Point High School seniors have earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in recognition of their outstanding success on AP program exams taken last spring. Rocky Point’s advanced placement program has grown over the past several years, as the district continues to seek opportunities to increase its academic rigor. Currently, the high school’s program includes 16 diverse AP courses, which span core subject areas and electives. The College Board’s Advanced Placement program provides interested and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high
school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams. Seniors Evan Komorowski and Connor Sick were named AP Scholars of Distinction for receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. The recognition of being named an AP Scholar with Honor was given to 13 students who received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. FUNDRAISERS - The Suffolk County Community College Women’s Volleyball Team raised $8,500 during this year’s annual Dig Pink Volleyball Match hosted to support breast cancer education programs and research efforts. Suffolk defeated the number-one seed, Fashion Institute of Technology, three sets to two during a highly entertaining back and forth five-set match. Over the past four years, Suffolk’s Women’s Volleyball team has raised more than $22,000 by participating in Dig Pink for the Side Out Foundation.

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the eight identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged in boats dubbed Shells, can either be solo or in groups
of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. This past weekend, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and ultimately win the race. He is truly the core of a firstclass boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook
technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than six minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless. This weekend, we are competing at the New York State Championships in Lake Saratoga, representing Long Island for St. John the Baptist DHS.

hundreds of community volunteers have come out to assist in the collection of over 20,000 turkeys and 50,000 pounds of food, which were then provided to Long Island families facing hardship in time for the holidays. Island Harvest has seen an increase in the requests for food and support services among the 570 communitybased agencies it serves. About 70,000 individuals
receive food assistance from the Island Harvest network each week. Now, following Hurricane Sandy, the numbers are still unprecedented. Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest provides food and non-food items for people who are hungry and in need, giving them a voice to help them transition from uncertainty to stability.

The day began with prewalk festivities, including music and activities for kids, followed by the 2.3mile walk, which was kicked off with music from the Stony Brook University Marching Band. Among the largest fundraising groups was the Stony Brook Medicine team – which was organized by Ellen Li, MD, PhD, Professor and Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine; and Ramona Rajapakse, MD, Associate Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology – raised more than $5,700, which will be designated to fund CCFA’s research, professional and patient education, and outreach programs. Evolving Over Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make
eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college
students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

Port Jefferson fourthand fifth-grade students banded together for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on October 21st during an after-school braceletmaking event. More than 70 children turned the popular rainbow loom bracelet hobby into a reason for local breast cancer patients to smile. Edna Louise Spear Elementary School teachers Deanna
Lilimpakis and Kristen Poulos organized the event, which turned out to be even better than expected, they said. Trays of pink and white rubber loom bands lined cafeteria tables where the children eagerly gathered around to make bracelets to be donated to breast cancer patients at Stony Brook University Hospital, Fortunato Breast Health Center at Mather Hospital and Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. “We wanted to take the popularity of the loom bracelets with students and use it to do something special,” said Lilimpakis. “Kristen and I knew that the kids would have a great time together, especially if they knew they were looming for a good cause, and we were right.” The students donated more than 125 bracelets.

Through Our Eyes In honor of National Alzheimer’s Disease and Awareness Month, and Family Caregivers Month® in November, the Long Island Museum will present an exhibit entitled Through Our Eyes from November 22nd through December 8th, 2013. This exhibit, underwritten by a generous grant from The Knapp-Swezey Foundation and sponsored by Nancy Burner & Associates, P.C., Elder Law & Estate Planning, represents a unique collaboration between The Long Island Museum and Day Haven Adult Services of Port Jefferson. The exhibition is an extension of the museum’s In The Moment: Art Engagement for People with Memory Lossprogram. Piloted in 2011 with a group from Day Haven, In The Momentis a gallery program of art engagement for people with memory loss and their care partners. To date, the program has served more than 800 participants. Based on the successful partnership with Day Haven, The Long Island Museum is honored to serve as a showcase for Through Our Eyes, a unique exhibition featuring the works of approximately ten participants selected by Day Haven recreational therapists. Dignity Day Eastern Suffolk BOCES has adopted the Olweus (pronounced Ol-VEYus) Bullying Prevention Program to address the Dignity for All Students Act. Students and staff at the Jefferson Academic Center participated in an assembly that focused on dignity, respect, feeling safe in school, and being
comfortable speaking to adults regarding harassment issues. Antibullying posters created by the students covered the walls of the school. Principal Christopher Williams said, “Dignity and respect does not end at the conclusion of the day or the school year but carries outside school as well. The
purpose of the assembly was to build positive relationships in the school and the classroom and for the students to understand and manage their feelings.” The Olweus program has an entire year’s worth of engaging, thoughtprovoking ideas and topics and team building activities.

The Salvation Army traditional Red Kettle Holiday Program will begin soon and is in need of volunteers to ring the bells at the Red Kettles, as well as musicians & singers. Table Top Red Kettles are smaller versions can be placed on a retail counter or at your place of work or business. The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a unique way of giving holiday gifts and needed clothing to deserving children on a more personal basis. Angel Tree Tags are placed on a traditional Christmas Tree, usually located at a mall or shopping center. Each tag has the child’s age,
sex, clothing sizes and a wish list of toys, gifts and clothing needed. The Port Jefferson School District welcomed Dylan Brady to the middle school on October 17th. Dylan, a 15 year-old student at North Shore Middle School and youth ambassador for the Long Island Tourette Association, gave a presentation on Tourette syndrome as part of the school’s One School, One Book initiative. All Port Jefferson students in grades six to eight read the fictional novel “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. The
bestselling story embodies the principles of character education and encourages everyone to embrace each other’s differences and celebrate individuality. Dylan educated the student body about Tourette syndrome and hosted a question-andanswer session to help listeners gain a better perspective about what it’s like living with Tourette syndrome. The students asked Dylan questions about bullying and how
his peers treat him. “It was an interactive learning experience to show students that although we may have a challenge, we can all achieve success and should be proud of who we are,” said Port Jefferson Middle School special education teacher Monica Consalvo, who organized the event. “Dylan shared that he is an athlete, student, twin brother and a singer in a band – all things that make him just like them.”

Sparking Conversations What to do in case of a fire, the importance of smoke detectors and the role of a firefighter were just a few of the items discussed during a recent fire prevention program at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School.
Members of the Rocky Point Fire Department visited the building during Fire Prevention Month to speak with the building’s classes about fire safety. The students were also allowed an up-close look at working fire trucks.
During their visit, volunteers from the department discussed the type of gear that firefighters wear when entering a fire, the function of a rescue and engine truck, as well as the equipment stored on both vehicles.

With Santa and his elves in the old Pine Neck Barn and the blacksmith beating away in the ClevelandGagen Blacksmith Shop it must be time again for the Annual Candlelight Tour and Tree Lighting at the Southold Historical Society. The Tour takes place the day after Thanksgiving, November 29th, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex in Southold. “This is one of the most fun and entertaining events of the year,” stated Society Director Geoffrey K. Fleming, “It gives the Historical Society a chance to show off the great ingenuity and decorating expertise of its volunteers,” he continued. Each year a different group of local residents decorate the various areas of the Museum Complex. The Tour is as exciting for children as it is for the adults. Each period
building is expertly decorated and arranged for visitors. Carefully placed candles and lanterns light the way through the grounds where tour guides in period hat and costume help the visiting public maneuver between the many buildings. While adults marvel at the decorations, children patiently await their visit with Santa, who is aided by his elves in the Pine Neck Barn. Each year the Candlelight Tour is different, and no two buildings are decorated in the same manner. Greens, swags, and red holiday ribbons flow over the mantels and furnishings in each of the historic buildings on the Tour. In addition to these decorative treatments, special Holiday themed objects from the Society’s rich collections will appear in these displays. At the Thomas Moore
House early Christmas traditions and period music dominate the cozy interior. At the Ann Currie-Bell House there will be demonstrations of traditional holiday craft making, including embroidery, rug hooking, and knitting. In the Bay View Schoolhouse the old fashioned cast iron stove will rumble away as children seated nearby create custom ornaments to decorate the school tree. Musicians stroll the grounds in period costume while visitors wander between the many other buildings, including the Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Corncrib, Icehouse, and others. A special group of refreshments will be available to all who attend the Tour in the Pine Neck Barn Annex. The lighting of the Hamlet Christmas Tree, which is looked forward to by all, will take
place in front of the Ann Currie-Bell House at 5 p.m. At the Society’s Prince Building, located on Main Road opposite Rothman’s Department Store, the Society’s consignment shop, the Treasure Exchange, will be open late (till 6 pm) for all those who wish to shop for the perfect Christmas gift or holiday item as will the Museum Gift
Shop which is stocked with all sorts of wonderful holiday gift ideas, including ornaments, books, children’s toys. The Society’s new building, the Reichert Family Center & Cosden Price Gallery, will also be open for visitors to see the current exhibition on display.
