Lumiere Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its founding in 1994. Featuring award winning students and professional dancers, the Nutcracker performances will be held at the Maguire Theater at SUNY College in Old Westbury, December 20th at 7 p.m. and December 22nd at 2 p.m. Lumiere Ballet’s Nutcracker follows the original Tchaikovsky, Petipa, Ivanov creation which was performed in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892. The magic of the music, the waltzing snowflakes, and the land of the sweets will give joy and inspiration to children of all ages. Lumière Ballet encompasses a year round professional training program, summer intensive studies, and a performing company which presents fine works from theclassical, romantic, and the Lumiere Ballet’s original repertoire. The company performs throughout Long Islandand New York City. Svetlana Caton - Founder and Artistic CoDirector of Lumière Ballet. Her background and training is from the great heritage of the Russian Ballet. The Perfect Dress By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,

well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So

after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. Thanksgiving Food Drive The Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau INTERFACE Program’s Thanksgiving Food Drive for local families will run from November 1st through November 21st. The Youth Bureau INTERFACE Program is a partnership between good neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven, united in a common effort to provide help to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents all year round. Walking For Beauty

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) reinvented their 21st Annual Walk for Beauty this year to include the Inaugural Hercules on the Harbor 10K Run (Sanctioned by USA Track & Field) and added a highly popular color splash to the 4K/6K Walk. Held on October 26th, the event drew over 1,500 participants to Stony Brook Village. Proceeds go directly to a targeted research fund at Stony Brook Medicine for breast cancer research and the WMHO Unique Boutique for prosthesis and wigs. Since its inception, “the Walk for Beauty has raised more than $1.275 million

for breast cancer research at Stony Brook Medicine and helped thousands by providing prostheses and wigs to those in need,” said Gloria Rocchio, WMHO President. WINNERS ANNOUNCED - On October 12th, Star Island Yacht Club hosted its 5th Annual Striped Bass Tournament. Winners were awarded cash and trophies for the biggest striped bass and the largest bluefish. This year’s big winner was the crew of “Joy Sea.” They won $5,000 for catching the heaviest striped bass, which weighed in at 41.7 pounds, and another $1,000 for the largest bluefish at 13.5 lbs. Members of “Big Game” took home $2,500 and second place with a striped bass weighing in at 39.4 lbs. Students Raise Awareness In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, fourth and fifth-grade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School made flower power pens that will be donated to local breast cancer support centers. The project was put together by special

education teachers Kristen Poulos and Deanna Lilimpakis. “Breast cancer has touched both of our lives,” Poulos said of herself and Lilimpakis. “We wanted to do something to bring a smile to people who are going through treatment and also bring awareness

to the student body.” All of the pens were made after school on October 21st, with the Port Jefferson students volunteering their time to participate in the project. Last year, students made Rainbow Loom bracelets to raise awareness for the same cause.

Award Winning Team The Suffolk County Community College Michael J Grant Campus forensics team won three awards at the Suffolk University speech and debate tournament in Boston, MA, last weekend. The team placed fourth in the overall team awards ranking higher than fouryear colleges such as Emerson College, Suffolk

University and Bridgewater State College. Although the team entered only three events at the tournament, they were just four points behind The University of Pennsylvania for 3rd place in the overall team scores Suffolk team president Nick Krauss of West Islip placed 1st in Informative Speaking while Shadrack Boakye of Brentwood

placed 2nd in Poetry Interpretation. Nick Krauss and Shadrack Boakye have also qualified for the National Speech and Debate Championships at Ohio University in April. Suffolk County Community College was the only community college to compete at the tournament.

Digging Pink Rocky Point studentathletes raised thousands of dollars this October for cancer research during awareness campaigns and events. One of their biggest endeavors was the Dig Pink fundraiser coordinated by the Rocky Point High School varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams

– an event that collected more than $6,000 for the Side Out Foundation. Dig Pink, a Suffolk County volleyball initiative started approximately six years ago, calls for teams to wear pink during a predetermined home game and raise dollars and awareness. During their October 24th match

against Huntington, teams sported bright pink t-shirts and attendees had the chance to purchase baked goods and raffle tickets for more than 30 baskets. During the last eight years, Rocky Point has raised more than $50,000 during their Dig Pink games.

Hundreds of law enforcement experts from across the nation gathered yesterday at the Upsky Long Island Hotel in Smithtown for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. The event marked the 8th year of the conference, which features presentations by experts in criminal street gangs, gang interdiction and investigations, strategies for gathering gang intelligence and social network investigations. Law enforcement plays a significant role in eradicating gangs, but any long-term strategy to counteract the influence of gangs should include community based youth centers with evening hours and K-12 gang prevention education in our schools. Officers O’Neill and Gibaldi spoke to the Port Jefferson class on Oct. 16 about New York State

Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and Criminal Procedure Law. They also spoke about experiences on the job, views on current events, training on environmental hazards, school violence, weapons use and force and the future of law enforcement. Giannusa said the opportunity gave students real-life perspective on what it takes to be a police

officer in Suffolk County. “Students learned a great deal,” he said. “They learned that they must think before acting, especially in our society where cameras are everywhere and your actions can easily be caught on tape. Most importantly, the officers stressed not to text and drive, as it leads to many accidents.”

Identity Thieves Can Steal Your Financial Stability (NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your

Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know. Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address. • Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.
