During the program, volunteers spoke with the students about the protective gear firefighters wear when entering a burning building and the importance of having a predetermined escape plan in the event of a fire. Calming the Chaos By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take

that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan

is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In ﬁve years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

Power of Gossip P.J. Gelinas Junior High School Theatre Company offered a candid look at the power of rumors as they presented the Long Island Premiere of the adolescent issue play Gossip this October. This one act play by award-winning playwright Brian Hampton brought Gossip to life and gave its infectious spreading powers a visible presence onstage. The show followed a group of high school theatre students

who befriend a charming yet sinister new student named Gossip, who immediately and secretly began to manipulate and twist the truth to get what she wants. When her new friends discover her ulterior motives, they turn on her as ruthlessly as she went after them, leading to a surprisingly twisted ending. A total of 13 students showcased their talents in this year’s production, which marked the

13th anniversary of the school preforming shows geared toward starting conversations about topics affecting today’s youth. Five students served as assistant directors for the performance, which was one again directed by Gelinas teacher Robert DePersio. Each of the grade levels had a chance to view the performance during the day and an evening show was provided to the community.

Rocky Point Middle School welcomed 60 international educators and students to share best practices for student engagement and positive support programs as part of their application in the International Inviting School Award. To welcome the visitors – who came from as far as Hong Kong and Australia – the entire school gathered in the front of the building on the morning of the event and displayed

colorful signs with the word “welcome” written in the native languages of the attendees. From there, the visitors were invited to tour the building and visit a number of educational spaces. They had the chance to participate in a sixthgrade science lab, view a robotics demonstration, learn about the school’s use of dogs in a motivational reading program and the countless ways the school promotes pride within the building.

The visit was coordinated as part of the New York International Alliance for Invitational Education 2015 World Conference. Invitational Education helps schools to become more intentionally optimistic, respectful, trustworthy, and caring through the people, places, policies, programs, and processes of the school. The result is an optimal environment in which all students and staff may realize their full potential.

Kara Thomas during an educational clinic during their English periods. Throughout the lesson, Thomas shared how she got her start as an author and spoke about the importance of incorporating symbolism

and imagery in narratives to help add meaning to the text. After sharing some examples from her novels, Thomas guided the students through an exercise to add symbolism and imagery to their own writing.

Sullivan’s house is getting an “extreme makeover” thanks to HFHS. An original member of the popular vocal group, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, Mr. Sullivan’s home suffered severe damage during Superstorm Sandy. The renovation will cost nearly

$80,000. Veterans from American Legion Smith-Weaver Post 651 of Sayville, are volunteering their time to do much of the work. The reconstruction is expected to be completed in eight to ten weeks.

SENIOR LUNCHEON - On October 21st, the Annual Installation of Officers luncheon for the Albert Tinnie seniors club was held. The event was held at the Mill Pond Country Club in Medford, during which Councilwoman Connie Kepert swore in the new officers, and presented Certificates of Appreciation and Congratulations to both outgoing and newly elected officers of the club.

Three Village Central School District students and staff blanked the community in a sea of orange and blue in support of Unity Day, a national movement designed to stomp out bullying and unite individuals in kindness, acceptance and inclusion. R.C. Murphy Junior High School hosted youth motivational speaker David Flood, who spoke to each grade level about the importance showing others dignity, respect and compassion. He

punctuated his message by making direct connections to his personal life as he challenged the student to: look beyond the exterior appearance to see what lies within people, give thanks to the adults in their lives that support them and help ensure that no one sits alone at lunch. Students, who were dressed in orange, reflected upon the messages of the program by signing a banner describing how they saw themselves and by creating a human chain in the shape of a

“U” to visually represent their participation in the movement. Setauket Elementary School students and staff also marked the day by wearing orange colored clothing to school. Nassakeag Elementary School showcased their support of the day by wearing blue and creating artistic drawings on paper hands that, when joined together, showcased the masterpiece they can create with they let their unique traits shine.

As part of its effort to ensure that every student has a post-secondary plan upon graduation, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School guidance department has developed a post-secondary planning guide for students in grades 9-12. The planning handbook, which was distributed to students during the week of October 19th, provides foundational information on post-secondary planning. Included in the 73-page guide are chapters on self-assessment, post-

secondary options, the college experience, the admissions process, planning timelines and college financial information. “This bound volume is both attractive and informative,” said Principal Christine Austen. “I am confident that Port Jefferson students will be using this handbook for years to come.” “It truly is an impressive document that will assist our students in postsecondary plans,” added Superintendent of Schools

(NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.

Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.”

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch

and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. • S t r e n g t h e n passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car.

The newest addition to the faculty of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is an accomplished musical talent. Christopher Scher has a masterful understanding of multiple instruments and has been sharing that gift by teaching others to play for nearly 10 years. He joined LIHSA as a music instructor this fall. The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts has been offering intensive training in the visual and performing arts for more than 40 years. Students from both Nassau and Suffolk counties are eligible to attend. LIHSA graduates have gone on to a variety of prestigious colleges and conservatories including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (just to name a few). At LIHSA, Mr. Scher will

instruct courses in music theory, ear training, the history of western music and digital media. To do this, he will draw on his vast knowledge of musical styles, from classical to contemporary. He will also pull from his background as a private applied music instructor. Mr. Scher has taught guitar at the Rock Underground in Commack, saxophone at the Knox School in St. James and general music at Gil Breines Music in Deer Park. Independently, Mr. Scher has taught students from a wide range of abilities and ages, mentoring and preparing them for seasonal recitals, ensembles and performances with the New York State School Music Association. At LIHSA, he will also direct the classical instrumental ensemble, drawing from his background as Music Director for the Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric

Center and Classical Guitar Director for the TriCommunity Youth Agency in Huntington. Mr. Scher holds a bachelor of music degree from Five Towns College and a master of arts degree from Stony Brook University. He also holds New York State certification in music instruction for grades K-12. “Chris has tremendous potential for success,” said LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “His enthusiasm, knowledge and diverse skill set are an ideal combination for an educator. He is a team player who works well with colleagues and he has a strong rapport with his students; they’re drawn to him. I believe that Chris has the ability to attract additional interest to the music program and to help us build it into the future.”

As part of the Shellfish Mariculture Program, the Town provides shellfish rafts, mooring supplies to anchor the rafts and shellfish to stock the rafts.

Students do the work required while being supervised by their teachers and Town of Brookhaven personnel. The Town also provides personnel and machinery to assist in the installation and removal of the rafts and periodic maintenance.

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
