Immigration Lesson

arl L. Vandermeulen High School students in the Port Jefferson School District visited the Ellis Island National Monument on October 20th as part of a lesson related to the immigration of Italians to America. During the trip, the students in Nicole Pennino-Costa’s Italian class took a tour of the national monument and learned more about the impact of the mass exodus from Italy between 1880 and 1914. A great time was had by all.

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Those struggling with mathematics at Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District can build their skills thanks to a new and inventive math-themed art project completed this fall by teacher Paul Wilgenkamp, with the help of retired Three Village art teacher Frank Marangiello. A giant yellow brick road, similar to the one made famous in the “Wizard of

Oz,” now covers the floor in the school’s math center. Inscribed in the design are numbers aimed at helping students with multiple factors, least common numerals, prime numbers and math properties. There is also a negative space – draw in black and white like Kansas was depicted in the movie – which shows the connection between the positive and negative integers. Through various activities, the students will

have the chance to travel the path of the yellow road and solve different mathematical quests. “It is our hope that as students progress through the various activities they will have the courage, heart and brains to feel at home with fact fluency,” said Mr. Wilgenkamp. “With the opportunity to practice, they will be feeling like math wizards in no time.”

So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. The Community Outreach Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) was created to highlight issues that are affecting people of all ages on Long Island. Free workshops have been planned for community members to obtain information from area professionals. Program Administrator Donna Singer said, “We want to support community members to find answers to the questions they have about societal issues such as drug abuse and Alzheimer’s.

Providing a forum for open communication is very important to ESBOCES, that’s why our Adult Education Program has taken the initiative to start the process with collaboration from Long Island professionals.” Drug Abuse on Long Island was the first in a series of workshops offered by ESBOCES. Twenty members of the community attended the three-hour workshop. Michael Spaccarotella, school social worker in the ESBOCES Incarcerated Education Program,

facilitated the presentation along with mental health professionals from South Oaks, Amityville; Seafield House, Westhampton Beach; Hope House, Port Jefferson, and Outreach House, Brentwood. The speakers discussed how heroin is used, the effects of drug abuse, telltale signs, and prevention and treatment. “The ‘war on drugs’ has been going on for 45 years and it’s an epidemic on Long Island. We want to help you find a path for yourself or a loved one,” Spaccarotella said.

Funding Received North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center has received funding from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation to pilot an exciting new initiative entitled Project Access. The goal of this comprehensive research project is to improve access to mental health and addictions care for all those who need it. According to project director Andrew Malekoff, families who are seeking community-based mental health or substance abuse care for their children are struggling to get it in a timely manner; access delayed is access denied.” Project Access was developed in response to the issues of parity and

network adequacy within our health system. The Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008 require that health insurance carriers meet Federal coverage standards on par with other medical benefits. Network adequacy refers to a health insurance carrier’s requirement to provide enrollees with timely access to a sufficient number of providers included in their benefit contract. Project Access will investigate the problem of families gaining timely and affordable mental health and addictions care, identify obstacles to accessing timely care, and disseminate findings to activate change. These activities will be executed

by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIUC.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.

Last February, students at James E. Allen Jr./ Sr. High School hosted television chef and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich. Last week, she returned the hospitality by welcoming students at Eataly in New York City. The Western Suffolk BOCES students were treated to a VIP tour October 13th of Eataly, an Italian marketplace, restaurant and cooking school owned by Bastianich and her partners. The students saw how mozzarella and dough

are made during hands-on demonstrations and were treated to tasty samples of roast beef and gelato. The tour concluded in the cooking classroom where Bastianich answered enthusiastic and thoughtful questions from the students and offered cooking tips. Each student went home with a goodie bag complete with pasta and sauce. “Our students have not stopped talking about how much they learned on this trip and how much they enjoyed spending time

Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff in the Three Village Central School District recently helped to promote the nationally recognized Unity Day by joining together to create an artistic symbol of peace. Keeping with their new character education motto

“Nassakeag CARES,” the school crafted colorful leaves with anti-bullying messages. The completed designs were affixed to a large tree themed bulletin board in the building’s main hallway to show that the school is working to stop bullying one leaf at a time.

The school will be updating the messages on the board each season as a way to continue to promote unity and anti-bullying throughout the year. Nassakeag CARES stands for compassionate, accepting, respectful, embracing and successful.

Published Writers Rocky Point School District’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School fourth-graders in Patricia Alberti’s class are learning first-hand about the world of journalism as part of

their work on an upcoming issue of Newsday’s Kidsday. For their piece, which will run the week of Febuary 11th, the entire class is working to develop feature articles, product

and book reviews as well as surveys. Four students recently traveled to New York City to interview the Kongos, a rock band, and enjoy skating at Rockefeller Center.

Power of Writing R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff in the Three Village Central School District recently put pencil to paper to explain what inspires their writing in celebration of the National Day of Writing.

In cut out thought bubbles, the students responded to one of several prompts. These prompts were in the form of hashtags, including #writeyourownstory and #whyIwrite. Once completed all

the responses were put on display outside of the English classrooms and students enjoyed reading their peers’ reflections and celebrating the power of writing.

Hundreds of law enforcement experts from across the nation gathered at the Upsky Long Island Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 20th, for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s 10th annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco organizes the event each year in conjunction with the Middle AtlanticGreat Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. The County Sheriff has made partnering with federal, state and

local law enforcement agencies a priority of his Administration and he says the Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar gives officials the opportunity to share information on current trends and improve collaboration. Highlights of this year’s event focused on security in the Brentwood School District in the wake of the high profile murders of two students, and others, by suspected gang members, as well as the scope of the gang problem in Long Island’s suburbs.

DeMarco stated, “Coordination and intelligence sharing are keys to combatting gangs. Gangs recognize no boundaries, and neither should we in law enforcement. Our willingness and ability to share gang-related investigative leads is one of the most effective ways we can work together to defeat street gangs, and this annual conference gives us the opportunity to strengthen our networks and build relationships.”

Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $286,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. Grant Received Options for Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have received a $25,000 grant from the M•A•C AIDS Fund. Options has developed programs that provide housing assistance and long-term rental housing for individuals and families in response to the critical need for affordable housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS on Long Island. Options currently operates 68 units across Long Island that provide safe, affordable housing to Long Islanders who were formerly homeless or inadequately housed.

Options requested program support from the M•A•C AIDS Fund to supplement funding for housing case management services. These services are vital to evaluate home safety; to assist tenants with budgeting and to provide referrals for health services as needed. The mission of the M·A·C AIDS Fund is to serve all people affected by HIV and AIDS. Their goal is: “to partner with the bold, the visionary and the brave who confront the epidemic in countries and communities where people are most neglected, off the radar and at

highest risk. M A C funds innovative programs that deal directly with the most marginalized, stigmatized and under-heard victims.” Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living, Inc., is grateful for the M·A·C AIDS Fund support. “Our housing program has allowed us to keep families together and to ensure that individuals have safe, affordable housing where they can flourish. This generous award from the M•A•C AIDS Fund will assist greatly as we carry out our mission,” she stated.

This levitation occurs when an alternating current is sent through a conducting coil, which is placed above a nonmagnetic plate, in this case aluminum. “This technology has the potential to revolutionize transportation since the ideal efficiency is a factor of 10 better than that of some of the most efficient cars,” he said. “Eddy current coil vehicles would essentially enable Maglev train-like transportation that is much more mobile and personal. In order for this technology to be implemented commercially, roads would need to have aluminum plating under them, which is quite plausible

considering the relatively low cost of aluminum compared to asphalt.” Brandon Feng’s project, “A Robust Sensor Network-based Estimation Model for Wind Fields” focused around estimating wind fields from solar irradiance data taken from solar panels in order to maximize panel efficiency. Kirti Nath’s project, “Assessing the developmental and metabolic toxicity of neuroactive pharmaceuticals using early life stage zebrafish,” focused on the fate of pharmaceutical compounds once released into the environment and the consequent implications of this phenomenon on wildlife.

Teacher Recognized The Port Jefferson School District recognized the efforts of middle school English teacher Allison Giannusa at its regular meeting on October 18th. Giannusa was acknowledged for serving as a role model to

students and coordinating numerous events, activities, fundraisers and special lessons for students. She also serves as the adviser of a number of clubs and works tirelessly on the school’s yearbook. “Because of [Allison],

Ward Melville High School seniors Brandon Feng, Kirti Nath, and Nestor Tkachenko earned top honors in the 2016 Siemens Competition for Math, Science, & Technology. Each of these Three Village Central School District students were named semifinalists and Nestor advanced to regional finalist status. As a finalist, Nestor will now have the chance to present his group research project, “Can Cars Fly? Eddy Current Magnetic Levitation as Viable Technology,” to the Siemens committee for additional honors. The topic for his project was something that captivated his interests since the first grade, when he visited the University of Michigan with his parents.
