In honor of her exemplary teaching practices, Minnesauke Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Kate Hunter has been named the Outstanding Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the National Council for the Social Studies and will be honored at the 97th NCSS Annual Conference in San Francisco from November 17th-19th. teachers and students came together to explain the program’s acronym and how everyone can be compassionate, accepting, respectful, encouraging and sharing each day. As an added reminder of the importance of the topic, Arrowhead’s mascot – CARES the Bear – made a special appearance

Colorful Display Students and teachers throughout the Port Jefferson School District put their creative thoughts into action when they took part in Port Jefferson Village’s first Harvest Fest Window Painting Contest. To participate, student teams worked through the planning, designing and painting processes under the guidance of their teachers and were assigned a storefront to paint in a Halloween or autumn theme where they recreated their designs on the windows. Organized

by the Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy, the displays are a festive addition to the village. “I am incredibly proud of all their hard work and dedication to their art,” said Samantha Shepard, one of the teachers who worked with the students. I’m sure you’ve heard that water is good for you, but why is that? What does it do for us? That’s what I want to share with you... Water makes up the majority of our weight. The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often. I drank iced tea, lots of coffee and other juices. I always said to myself - the beverages I am drinking are made with water, that’s good enough. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wasn’t giving my body nearly enough fresh, clean water. Now, you might ask yourself - well how much water do I need? Ideally, 64 ounces daily is a good goal. That’s eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, a simple habit of health. I have a 32-ounce water bottle that I fill three times a day. If you’re overweight, live in a hot

MAUREEN’S HAVEN!

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

Recognizing the need for consistent support and services for the homeless in the region, Maureen’s Haven opened a day center in Riverhead to provide respite from the cold and year-round services for this vulnerable and growing population. The day center is the first of its kind in Suffolk County. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year. In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. Hundreds of law enforcement experts gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 19th for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. The event, which is in its 11th year, was started by Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco in 2006, and is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost events for gang-related information sharing and education. Are You Prepared to Cast Your Ballot on Election Day? Polls in Suffolk County are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day, November 7th. Many voters are unprepared when they arrive at the polls, unaware of what offices are on the ballot, what each candidate stands for, and unfamiliar with state or local propositions on the back of the ballot. Yes, the ballot is frequently confusing and the print can be quite small (NYS election law requires a one-page ballot; lobby your state Senator and Assembly member if you think this merits review). The old lever machines are gone - there was no way to verify whether they were accurately recording each vote - and, for the past few years, voters have been using optical scanners, which are verifiable via a paper trail. The Suffolk County ballot will include candidates for judges, district attorney and sheriff. All 18 Suffolk County Legislature seats are on the ballot as well. Locally, there are elections for various town offices. Do your research and come to the polls prepared. Watch for news of candidate forums in your community and articles in your local newspaper or visit www.Vote411.org. To confirm that you are registered to vote and confirm your polling place, visit www.SuffolkVotes.com, the website of the Suffolk County Board of Elections. If you believe your information is incorrect, contact them at 631.852.4500. The League of Women Voters of New York State has published a Voter Guide Part II: Ballot Proposals, which may help you evaluate the three proposals that will be on the November 2017 ballot. This trifold can be found on the LWVNYS website www.LWVNY.org/Advocacy/

Vote/2017/Voters-Guide_2_2017.pdf and may be printed out. Please read it before heading to the polls. To help you, the three proposals are summarized below: The first proposal: “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” is offered by law every 20 years to the electorate. If the vote is negative, there will be no convention. If the majority vote yes, there will be a convention in 2019 to consider amendments to the New York State Constitution. In November 2018, delegates will be elected by the voters - three from each state senatorial district and 15 at large. The amendments that are adopted by a majority of the delegates will be submitted to the voters for their approval at least six weeks after the convention adjourns. Proponents of the convention hope that it will affect election voting and ethics reform, changes that have been proposed to the legislature but never passed. Other areas for improvement are judicial reform, environmental issues, and health care and women’s issues. Opponents of the proposal are concerned that it may lead to a complete overhaul of the state constitution, removing or revising protections of state pensions and collective bargaining, the Adirondack Forest Preserve and school funding. The second proposal: “Allowing the complete or partial forfeiture of a public officer’s pension if he or she is convicted of a certain type of felony” would allow a court to reduce or revoke the pension of a public officer who is convicted of a felony that has a direct and actual relationship to the performance of the officer’s duties. In reaching this determination, the court must consider

the seriousness of the crime and whether the forfeiture would result in undue hardship to dependent children. If approved, the amendment will apply only to crimes committed on or after January 1st, 2018, because the New York Constitution now provides that the benefits of a public pension or retirement system cannot be reduced or impaired. The third proposal: “Authorizing the use of forest preserve land for specific purposes” would create a land account with up to 250 acres for use by towns, villages and counties that have no viable alternative to using forest preserve land to address specific public health and safety concerns. Another 250 acres will be added to the forest preserve as a substitute for the land removed. The proposed article would allow counties and townships of certain regions to conduct repairs on road and bridges and allow for the installation of new bike paths, broadband internet and water well infrastructure. Although the Adirondack Forest Preserve is protected by the “Forever Wild” clause of the constitution, local governments, elected officials and the NYS DEC all support this amendment, feeling it is necessary for the safety of residents and to ensure that quality of life is maintained. biographical information on the select trustee, before providing them with a token of the district’s appreciation. These tokens included original artwork created by a student or small group of students from that school building.

R.C. Murphy Junior High School and Ward Melville High School and staff students in the Three Village Central School District recently celebrated the craft of writing by taking part in various activities centered on the celebration of the National Day of Writing. At Murphy, students

reflected upon what inspires them – both as writers and individuals. They created original poems and short pieces to visually depict their inspiration. Ward Melville students’ pieces focused on the theme of peace and drew inspiration from a famous quote by Martin Luther

King Jr. Students noted how they find internal peace and the hopes they have for global peace. The work created at both schools was displayed on large pieces of colorful paper hung outside the English classrooms for all to see, read and appreciate.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

attendees were instructed in how to create cooperative pieces of artwork that they were able to take home. The event was hosted by Minnesauke faculty and staff, with the support of the PTA, local businesses, family and friends. Local businesses and teachers

from throughout the Three Village Central School District donated gifts cards and to raffle off. As a result of the initiative, the school raised more than $3,418 dollars for the honoree.

Building Bridges Three Village Central School District’s R.C. Murphy Junior High School eighth-grade technology class taught by Derek Angermaier has been exploring the topic of structural engineering by designing and building bridge structures.

The bridges were designed using all available resources and enhanced with Bridge Designer software simulations. Tested to support a remarkable 104.4 pounds, a bridge designed and constructed by Justin Santana set a new record

for the school and was determined to have the highest structural efficiency in his class. Structural efficiency is the relationship between the weight of the structure and the weight supported.

Apple Crunch Day Jennifer Meschi’s firstgrade class at Frank Carasiti Elementary School in the Rocky Point School District had a fruitful celebration during New York Apple Crunch Day on October 19th. Along with applerelated songs, a science experiment, reading applethemed books and parent

volunteers who worked on apple crafts with them, they were part of a large effort to raise awareness for local farmers. The students joined thousands of New York residents in taking a bite out of an apple at lunchtime for the New York food and farm industries. “We were registered

participants to help support the cause of bringing more access to fresh fruits and vegetables into our communities,” said Meschi. “We wanted to be a part of this initiative so people understand the importance of eating healthy foods and supporting our farmers.”

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards,

or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country

and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “There are also many people right here on Long Island who need our help and we hope Long Islanders’ continued generosity to support one another, both near and far, will continue into the holiday season. Last year, a record 18,300 pounds of food and over 2,300 turkeys were donated to Island Harvest Food Bank and our goal this year is to top those numbers. Please

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay was joined by SUNY Chancellor Dr. Kristina M. Johnson, elected officials, college faculty staff, and administration and community members at a gala celebration and ribbon cutting to celebrate the official opening of Suffolk County Community College’s new $30 million, nearly 75,000 square foot Learning Resource Center (LRC) and library on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood on October 19th.

“The new Learning Resource Center will serve as a powerful symbol of the value that the College and its students bring to the vitality of our shared community,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. Amidst a sea of American flags, proud veterans and members of the community assembled on a quiet street in Melville on Monday to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new “smart” home for Long Island Army veteran Christopher Levi. Northwell Health is one of several contributors to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is spearheading construction of the 3000-square-foot house. Among those on hand to wish CPL Levi well and to participate in the ceremony were Joseph Schulman, senior vice president and regional executive director at Northwell Health and Juan Serrano, director of Military and Veterans Liaison Services for the health system. Mr. Schulman, one of the founding executive administrators of the Military and Veterans Liaison Services, told the assembled crowd that CPL Levi served as an inspiration for the health system’s continued concern for veterans and their loved ones. “We want to thank Chris for his bravery and inspiration,” said Mr. Schulman. “Our president and CEO, Michael Dowling, told us when we were creating our program for veterans that we should aim the bar high. Working with

the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to build a home for veterans in need is one of the efforts we’re so proud to support.” Mr. Serrano, a former Marine and combat veteran, added: “As the largest private employer in New York State and the largest provider of health care in the region, it is our responsibility to create meaningful opportunities and supports for our veterans and their families. Northwell Health has made a pledge to veterans that we take very seriously, whether it’s helping them get back to work, learning important job-training skills or finding the right medical or behavioral health help, or partnering with outstanding organizations like Tunnels to Towers to build a home for a hero, our message is clear – no veteran should ever be left behind.” CPL Levi, 34, formerly an Army Ranger with the 10th Mountain Division in Iraq, was injured on March 17th, 2008 when an IED hit the armored Humvee in which he and his comrades were riding. As a result of his injuries, CPL Levi lost both legs and sustained significant damage to his right hand and arm. Prior to his deployment in Iraq, CPL Levi served a tour of duty in Afghanistan. Following his discharge from Walter Reed Hospital

in 2009, CPL Levi returned to his parents’ home in Holbrook. Now, thanks to an army of volunteers from local businesses mobilized by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, CPL Levi can look forward to a home of his own – the first home built on Long Island by the esteemed foundation. Northwell donated $100,000 toward the home. The home, a threebedroom, two-and-a-halfbath ranch, will offer the latest in “smart home” technologies that will afford CPL Levi the greatest levels of comfort possible. It is slated for completion, appropriately enough, by Memorial Day 2018. The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation created its Building for America’s Bravest program to give back to catastrophically injured service members who have paid an enormous price for our freedom, said the Foundation’s spokesperson, who also stated that CPL Levi’s will be the 66th home donated. “Thanks to the generosity of Northwell Health,” said John Hodge, COO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, “our goal – to get this Long Island hero into his customized home by spring – is that much closer to reality.”
