International Peace Day
M
iller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Elementary School fifth grade students recently celebrated International Peace Day. Students kicked off the day by watching a screening of “The Day After Peace,” an inspirational film which follows peace-activist Jeremy Giller as he puts the concept of peace in action during an average day. Following the screening, students were led in small groups to reflect on how they personally can make peace.

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect
of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in
other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

In honor of Fire Prevention Month, students throughout the Three Village Central School District learned valuable safety information from local firefighters during in-school programs. Members of the Stony Brook Fire District conducted two interactive assemblies at W.S. Mount
Elementary School and visited students in their classrooms to conduct follow up conversations. Throughout the daylong event, volunteers reinforced the importance of having a predetermined family meeting place, the need to regularly replace smoke detector batteries and the number to call in
case of an emergency. Outside the building, students were able to tour two working fire apparatuses and take an up-close look at the firefighters’ lifesaving equipment. Each student was then provided with a keepsake fireman’s helmet and informational goody bag.

In preparation for the upcoming election, Rocky Point High School’s participation in government classes recently had the chance to better understand the bipartisan stance of two House of Representatives candidates during an inschool workshop. During separate events, Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin and Democratic challenger Anna Throne-
Holst provided a brief introduction to their political platforms before answering questions posed by the students. In advance of the program, students prepared questions related to matters of foreign policy, economics and domestic social issues. Among the topics discussed were relations with China, taxes on big businesses and issues on world terrorism.
“Many students are focused on the presidential election taking place this year so this in-person Town Hall experience served as a reminder of the other officials seeking election this November,” said teacher Brooke Bonomi. “The program was also a good way for the students to become more involved and engaged in the local politics impacting their community.”

Fire Safety In an effort to promote fire safety and prevention, Port Jefferson Middle School orchestra teacher and volunteer firefighter Christian Neubert arrived to school on October 11th in a fire truck.
Surrounded by intrigued students, Neubert took the opportunity to provide students with safety tips before allowing them to try on his fire gear and air mask. Students also learned about life-saving
tools that firefighters use, including the Jaws of Life. “Students were genuinely excited about this important safety lesson,” said Principal Dr. Robert Neidig.
Healing Heart 5K The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in the Port Jefferson School District were recently featured on LI News Radio’s “Spotlight on Schools”
segment, hosted by Robert Vecchio. During the segment, which will air on November 5th, the students spoke about two of the district’s
programs of pride: music and science. Both studentmusicians and members of the Science Olympiad team shared some of the unique experiences they have had.
Building Business On October 18th, the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) hosted its 12th annual “Building Business In Brookhaven Expo” at Town Hall and broke all previous records for participating vendors and attendees. The event, which attracted over 500 local business people and 130 vendors, focused on business networking and included a trade show with booths highlighting
local, regional and national companies that service businesses in Brookhaven Town. The expo was presented by the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven, Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency and the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition (BCCC). During the evening, vendors and attendees

Teddy Bear Clinic W.S. Mount Elementary School kindergarten students in the Three Village Central School District had the chance to act as emergency room doctors during a recent interactive workshop with representatives from Stony Brook University. During the “Teddy Bear
Clinic” program, the students were reminded of important safety tips to keep in mind when riding a car or a bicycle before suiting up as professional doctors. Wearing protective gloves, hairnets and facemasks, the kindergartners took care of their most
precious stuffed animals by adhering bandages, braces and splints. The program served not only as a reminder of a variety of safety tips but also to help ease students’ apprehensions of going to the doctor.

Promoting Acceptance In recognition of National Unity Day, R.C. Murphy Junior High School students and staff in the Three Village Central School District dressed in orange on October 19th and came together to enjoy a fun and educational assembly program. Renowned singer songwriter Jared Campbell shared messages of
kindness through original songs. He encouraged the students to continue to strive to be their best selves, perpetuate kindness and give thanks to those in their lives who have supported them along the way. The assembly was part of the school’s weeklong initiative to promote unity. Additional activities
include creating a paper chain linked with messages of how to create a united environment, a mix it up at lunch program that encouraged students to sit with a new peer and a teacher swap that switched teachers and administrators from Murphy with their counterparts at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School.
Festive Fall Decór The front of Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District has been transformed into a fall-themed display, showcasing 31 unique and crafty scarecrows. As part of the Displays of Minnesauke Scarecrows
project, each class was challenged to create a large scarecrow based on a central theme. Working with their teachers and parent volunteers, the classes brainstormed concepts and collected materials before getting to work. Completed projects
ranged from a bookworm and brainy scarecrow to ones with sports themes. The fall-themed projects were placed on display in advance of the school’s Harvest Festival and will remain up until the end of October.

Blydenburgh County Park, which is the headwaters of the river, and Short Beach in Saint James, where the mouth enters the Long Island Sound. During their visit, each group collaborated with professional naturalists and conducted a biodiversity study. Students collected physical data from the river and surrounding area, including information on currents, tides and
weather data, as well as performed chemical tests to determine the water quality, and created a map of each study area. All the data collected by Gelinas’ students and the other participating school districts will be uploaded to the Portal to Discovery website, and will become a permanent record of this day in the Life of the Nissequogue River.

International Peace Day Miller Place School District’s Laddie A. Decker Elementary School 5th grade students recently celebrated International Peace Day. Students kicked off the day by watching a screening of “The Day After Peace,” an inspirational film which follows peaceactivist Jeremy Giller as he puts the concept of peace in action during an average day. Following the screening, students
were led in small groups to reflect on how they personally can make peace in their lives. To raise awareness and promote international peace, during recess periods the entire 5th grade class gathered on the playground blacktop to create a giant peace sign. The Miller Place School District held this event to teach students the importance of developing a global perspective on
conflict and conflict resolution as part of its dedication to providing an outstanding academic and character education for all students. Laddie A. Decker Elementary School encourages students to “think globally and act locally” on their ideas and visions, a program spearheaded by Student Assistance Counselor Phoebe Arancio.
Marching with Pride The Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School recently held its annual homecoming parade and football game to celebrate the spirit and excitement of the Miller Place community. The parade featured student-designed and decorated floats recreating different biomes from around the world. The senior class designed an ocean-themed float, the junior class designed a rainforest-themed float, the sophomore class designed an arctic-themed float and the freshman
class designed a desertthemed float. The senior class was named the winners of a competition between the grades for the most innovative homecoming float, best hallway decorations, displaying the most class spirit, the most fundraising and collected the most goods for a food and goods drive. As the first place recipients, the senior class received $500 in prize money from the Student Council funds. During the homecoming festivities, each class also worked to raise money for
Make-A-Wish Foundation, collecting more than $3,500 by the day’s end. The parade began at the Miller Place Fire Department and culminated on the football field at the Miller Place High School. The Miller Place High School cheerleaders, groups of students from each school in the District, the Miller Place High School pep band and local community members marched alongside the different floats.

Memorial Square Dedicated On October 17th, the Town of Brookhaven dedicated the new Veterans Memorial Square in Rocky Point with an Armed Forces flag raising ceremony. Councilwoman Jane Bonner worked with the Rocky Point VFW, local businesses and the Town Parks Department to turn a blighted property, which was the former site of the Oxygen Bar, into a
beautiful passive park that also serves as the gateway to downtown Rocky Point. In 2011, the Town shut down the Oxygen Bar due to an expired Place of Assembly permit after a non-fatal shooting of four people occurred there. It was a vacant eyesore in the community for five years while Councilwoman Bonner spearheaded the Town’s efforts to purchase

During the trip, the 60 students boarded Celtic Quest charter boat out of Port Jefferson. Throughout the day, they enjoyed a brief fishing experience before dredging the harbor to study the
benthic organisms. At the conclusion of the trip, the students tallied all the fish caught and completed a lab based on the data gathered during the trip.

Pirates & Princesses The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final days of the 2016 season with its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Monday, October 10th. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. “The Pirates and
