The Miller Place School District recently celebrated the start of construction of a new gymnasium at Andrew Muller Primary School. Superintendent of Schools Mr. Seth Lipshie

joined with members of the District administration, the Board of Education, District Architect and representatives of RENU Contracting & Restoration to celebrate the

groundbreaking. “We are thrilled to announce the start of construction of the new gymnasium at Andrew Muller Primary School. Our District has worked

diligently to make this possible. This provides an excellent physical education environment for our students. The current shared gymnasium space can now be utilized for

a dedicated cafeteria and an area to host school assemblies,” said Mr. Lipshie. The site of the new gymnasium will be located to the left of the main

District’s Volunteer-Run Garden Thrives In Its Second Year

Students at Clinton Avenue Elementary School in the Comsewogue School District kicked off autumn with a harvest festival at the school’s community garden. Children decorated pumpkins, created paper scarecrows, planted bulbs in the garden, played corn hole and took photos at a festive face-in-hole photo booth. “The District launched its community

garden last year and it is now thriving. It served as a beautification effort and a way to give back to the community through donations. Our garden is always looking for more volunteers and donations,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. Clinton Avenue Elementary School Nurse Kelly Klug spearheaded

the community garden and manages it with the help of community volunteers. Throughout the summer, they have been growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. In the fall, they harvest the produce and donate it to local food banks. The garden is also host to events throughout the year for children in the community, such as its harvest festival.

Sixty visitors to the recent Sunshine Prevention Center Fall Festival in Port Jefferson Station were trained by the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) in the use of Narcan, the antidote to an overdose, and received a kit containing two doses of the antidote. Research indicates that fentanyl is now the number one cause of death in the United States for people between the ages of 18-45 years. In addition, the SCPD also educated well over 100 community members about Narcan and the risks associated with illicit drug use. The training was conducted by SCPD Emergency Medical Service Officers Jason Byron and Alex Trzepizur, who work closely with the SCPD’s Behavioral Health Unit. “That number of people who were willing to take

five minutes out of their day to learn about opioids, fentanyl and the overdose epidemic was impressive,” said Byron. Festival visitors also stopped by a table with purple rocks intended to be decorated with the names of loved ones lost to overdose and fentanyl poisoning. Called the Purple Rock Project by the mothers who provide the rocks, the finished rocks are placed around parks and other locations, including Gabriel’s Giving Tree Memorial & Recovery Garden at Suffolk County Environmental Center at the Scully Estate, 550 South Bay Avenue in Islip, as a reminder of how many Long Islanders have died from O.D. and fentanyl poisonings. “Writing a child’s name on a rock may seem like a small thing, but I think it is a way of saying to the

world that their child was once here,” said Carole Trottere, who lost her son Alex in 2018. Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving each October. While October may not be home to Thanksgiving in the United States, Americans, much like their Canadian counterparts, have much to be thankful for in the tenth month of the calendar year. Fall temperatures tend to be at their most accommodating in October, which also happens to be home to Halloween. Those are not the only interesting and fun facts about this popular month. 1. October has something of a misleading name. Licensed drivers undoubtedly know that the prefix “octo” means eight, which is why Stop signs are octagons. So why does October,

the tenth month of the year, have a name that suggests it should be the eighth month of the year? That peculiarity can be traced to the early Roman calendar, which featured just 10 months, the eighth of which was October. The Romans eventually converted to a 12-month calendar, and October kept its name despite becoming the tenth month of that calendar. 2. Some notable individuals have holidays in their honor in October, including two on the same day. This year, Monday, October 9, 2023, is both Columbus Day

and Leif Erikson Day. It’s fitting that each figure’s holiday falls on the same day, as both are among history’s more wellknown explorers. Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas in 1492, while Leif Erikson Day celebrates a man believed to be the first known European to set foot in continental North America. 3. Columbus Day might court its fare of fanfare (and controversy), but its popularity cannot match that of October’s most beloved day to celebrate: Halloween. Halloween is celebrated on October 31 and History.com notes this can be traced to ancient Celts. The

Celts celebrated the festival of Samhain on October 31, the night before their new year. They did this because they believed that night marked the return of the ghosts of the dead to earth. That emphasis on the ghoulish is present each Halloween as well. 4. October is considered a great time of year to take a road trip, and much of that reputation can be traced to fall foliage. Leaves begin to change color in many regions in early October, and the resulting colorful landscape is beautiful to behold. Though some may presume the shift in color in October is due to the month’s typical drop in temperature, it’s actually due to a

decrease in sunlight. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, leaves begin to lose their green color when photosynthesis from sunlight slows down, which happens because the hours of daylight dwindle considerably during the month of October. That lack of sunlight causes chlorophyll to break down, which in turn causes leaves to change color. But not all leaves will look the same, as any leaf-peeping pro will know. Some leaves turn red, while others turn brown, orange, or yellow. The trees that turn red get more direct sunlight in October, while those that get less direct sunlight turn brown, orange, or yellow.

The Rocky Point School District’s Strategic Plan continues to create educational experiences that foster student ownership of learning. Students and teachers work together to create learning environments that make space for all learning styles. Case in point is a recent visit to a new animation and CGI (computer generated imagery) course at Rocky Point High School. The course is one of the Strategic Plan’s nine-period day new electives offered at the high school. Open to students in grades 10-12, it is a beginning production course in which students learn the basic principles of animation and develop visual language, storytelling, observation and communication skills. Students are exploring various styles and methods of animation, including CGI and digital animation. “Our teachers are using their skills to engage students with up-to-date tools and resources needed to provide an engaging, relevant, student-centered learning experience for them through a variety of instructional methods and opportunities to demonstrate learning,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien said.

Keep Kids Safe On Halloween

When Halloween arrives each October, most people are interested in the entertaining aspects of the holiday in addition to the abundance of sweet foods that are there for the taking. Even though fun may be foremost on the brain, it is important for everyone to keep safety in mind as well. According to the Florida Law Group, Halloween is a time of heightened injuries and fatalities and is actually the deadliest day of the year for children. A State Farm Insurance study that analyzed four million fatalities between 1990 and 2010 discovered children are twice as likely to die on Halloween as they are on any other day of the year.
