At the end of the visit, students received a commemorative firefighter hat and activity book. The day kicked off with the 5K Fun Run followed by a scenic 5K Walk through Suffolk County’s Holtsville Ecology Park that featured activities for the entire family along the way. For the third year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-nRoll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more.
This year’s event Grand Marshals were seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, hosted its “Walk, Run & Ride for Autism,” on October 12th at the Holtsville Ecology Center. DDI raised nearly $60,000 to help fund the vital programs and services DDI provides to over 5,000 families served by their educational and residential programs, adult day training and medical services. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said cochair of the event Charley Hudson. “This year we not only met that goal, but we exceeded it. It is inspiring to see the generosity of a community come

Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.
Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming
over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

More than 150 family members from across Long Island recently gave their beloved seniors the royal treatment during the Association of Generational Experts for Seniors’ (AGES) Fifth Annual “Savvy Senior Day” at Parker Jewish Institute in New Hyde Park, which was hosted by Parker Jewish Institute and AgeWell New York. The year’s celebratory event recognized 30 senior citizens across Nassau and Suffolk for their vast accomplishments and contributions made within their communities, including 74 year-old William Young of Huntington and 92 year-old Lillian Guadagno of Valley Stream, who were crowned 2014 King and Queen, respectively, and were awarded gift certificates for professional studio portraits, courtesy of Bradford Renaissance Portraits. “It is so uplifting to be able to celebrate each year the many extraordinary seniors that not only live within but also actively contribute to our communities,” says AGES Chairperson Kevin Lawrence. “There are so many seniors living on Long Island who remain agile and active on Long Island. AGES’ annual Savvy Senior Day is designed to provide seniors with a special public forum where they can deservingly shine among friends and family. Thanks to its amazing public following and strong participation, Savvy Senior Day has grown since its establishment five years ago and has had the privilege of honoring many wonderful seniors each year.” Young, who was crowned 2014 Savvy Senior King by 2013 King Frank Zizzo, received this honor for his community volunteerism and contributions made to Town of Huntington’s Senior Center and Beach House. Among his other charitable efforts are distributing selfpurchased gifts to local churches for children receiving
free meals, promoting hope and encouragement by meeting local soldiers and veterans at Northport VA Hospital by meeting with them and giving them handcrafted flowers, assisting with citizenship preparation classes at Chinatown Senior Center in Manhattan, NY, and donating his hand-made flowers to fundraisers in support of various causes, including breast cancer. “It means a lot to be named Savvy Senior King,”
says Young. “If I can continue to be involved and make a difference at my age, everyone else can do the same. Savvy Senior Day is a wonderful thing. It’s a great vehicle for giving back to the many seniors who have done and continue to do great things and hopefully inspires others to stay active within their own communities.” Guadagno was named Savvy Senior Queen for her 20-year activism with Long Island Society of Italian
Americans (LISIA), which includes serving as an Executive Board member for the past 12 years. As part of her involvement with LISIA, Guadagno has helped organize day an overnight trips as Recreation Director, served as Chairperson for its Scholarship Committee, and has been committee member for LISIA’s St Joseph’s, Columbus Day and Christmas Dance Celebrations. Among her other charitable contributions are servings as a volunteer with the Valley Stream and Nassau County Auxiliary Police Departments, participating in the American Red Cross’ Widow & Widowers Group after her husband’s passing, and volunteering with AARP Tax Aid. She has also been a social member with the Red Hat Ladies, Catholic Golden Age, Sons of Italy-Celini Lodge and Broadway Theater Group. “I was in total shock when I was announced Queen, it came so unexpected,” explains Ms. Guadagno. “Being crowned ‘Savvy Senior Queen’ among friends and family was so humbling and uplifting. Earning this recognition is a direct reflection on the many activities and experiences I’ve had the privilege of enjoying with so many wonderful people over the past 20 years of my life. It is such a great honor!” Adds Guadagno, “AGES’ Savvy Senior Day provides such an important role within today’s senior community. Not only does it allow seniors the opportunity to be acknowledged for their many accomplishments but it also inspires us as seniors to continue being active contributors and achievers within the communities we live in.”

Fire Smart In celebration of fire prevention month, Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School students received a refresher course on fire safety and prevention when members of the Rocky Point Fire Department
visited the building. During the visit, the firefighters spoke about the type of gear they wear when entering a fire, the importance of smoke detectors and having an escape plan in case of an
emergency. The students were active participants in the event, as the firefighters invited them to climb aboard an operational fire truck during the program.

As popular songs from the 1900s like By the Beautiful Sea and Pack Up Your Troubles In Your Old Kit-Bag drifted across the parking lot at 118 Spring Street in Port Jefferson, Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students who attend Jefferson Academic Center (JAC), participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the historic building’s 100th birthday. ESBOCES has been providing special education services at JAC since 1998. The cornerstone of the building reads A.D. 1914. According to an historic Port Jefferson Echo newspaper article from 1913, High School in Ashes – Disastrous Midnight Blaze Ushered in the Fourth at Port Jefferson, the original wooden high school structure burned on July 4, 1913. Seventy-five thousand dollars was appropriated to rebuild the structure using brick and stone and it was
completed in 1914. Back in 1914, boys and girls entered the building separately as apparent by the separate entrances on opposite sides of the 100–year-old building. The genders may have been separated by doorways, but their education fell under the doctrine that Knowledge is Power, a phrase carved into the front of the building for all to see. ESBOCES students used 21st century technology to research the history of the 100-year-old building addressing the Common Core Learning Standards of history, English, art, and technology. They compared what life was like in 1914 to 2014 creating informational “Then vs Now” posters contrasting baseball, politics, education, transportation, societal issues, and the economic times. Principal Christopher Williams said, “Students
and staff work together to give back to the community. Throughout the year the students engage in activities that support learning, improve social skills, and ultimately will help them to be productive members of society, and maximize their potential.” ESBOCES Social Worker Christian Scott, Principal Chris Williams, and Special Education Teacher Patricia Dolan dressed in period costumes for the occasion and presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony. After singing Happy Birthday to the Jefferson Academic Center, students and staff returned to their classrooms where they enjoyed a piece of cake. Two cakes were specially designed for this historic occasion. One had a picture of the Port Jefferson High School building circa 1914, and the other a present day picture of Jefferson Academic Center.
Dignitaries, industry leaders, administrators, educators and students gathered to mark the inaugural year of the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH). In an official ceremony held at Farmingdale State College, LI P-TECH’s first graduating class — the Class of 2020 — was celebrated by 60 notables from across Long Island. Offering words of welcome at the start of the ceremony were a number of LI P-TECH’s key partners including Dr. W. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lydia Begley, Associate Superintendent for Educational Services at Nassau BOCES; Rhonda Taylor, Assistant Superintendent of the Uniondale UFSD; Frank Robilotto, Chief Executive Officer of Arkwin Industries; and Christine Lopes, Grants Administrator for the Uniondale UFSD. Long Island P-TECH is an important educational model,” Dr. Begley said in her address. “It is the beginning of a strong pathway to college and careers, and provides essential opportunities for Long Island students. LI P-TECH’s unique partners work together to help meet regional demands, and to address the state’s concerns for equity of access to college and career readiness. Together, we can literally help these

children.” “P-TECH is a fundamentally different partnership among K-12 schools, higher education and industry,” added Ms. Banta in her Keynote. “It has the potential to completely transform the way that we prepare our youth for college and the world of work.” Following the keynotes, Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto presented members of the P-TECH Steering Committee with a citation commending the launch of the school. Dr. Francine Federman, Assistant Dean of College-High School Programs for Farmingdale State College, led attendees to the college’s Institute for Research and Technology Transfer (IRTT) for P-TECH student demonstrations. A group of 20 students from the Freeport, Uniondale and Wyandanch school districts showed what they learned about the leading-edge technology of 3D printing, using some of the state-of-the-art tools available through the college. Prospective and recently accepted students and their families will be welcomed by faculty, administrators and current students to Suffolk County Community College’s open house scheduled across all three of college’s campuses on Sunday, November 2nd from 1 to 3 p.m. College faculty and administrators will welcome visitors and offer detailed information about Suffolk’s more than 70 degree and 30 certificate programs and will be joined by admissions staff to help students and parents navigate the admissions process and answer questions. Real World Math Practical applications for a variety of complex math theories were at the center of an in-school field trip for third through sixth-graders at Setauket Elementary School and the secondary students in the Three Village School
District when the Math Midway 2 Go travel exhibit visited the buildings. Created by the Museum of Mathematics in NYC, the exhibit included six interactive stations that captivated and engaged students in concepts
ranging from geometry and algebra to probability, statistics and number systems. At each of the exhibits, the students completed a hands-on experiment and learned about the mathematics behind the lesson.
Bump, Set, Spike A sea of pink blanketed the gymnasium at Ward Melville High School as the girl’s varsity and junior variety teams hosted a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness month. Dig Pink, a Suffolk County volleyball initiative started by WMHS coach Charles Fernandes approximately six years
ago, calls for teams to wear pink during a predetermined home game and raise money and awareness. Ward Melville dedicated their October 14th games against Commack High School to the initiative. The teams sported unique white and pink t-shirts created by the
Side Out Foundation and coordinated a bake sale and sold pink bracelets for the cause. The Ward Melville boys volleyball teams will host a similar event during their October 27th game. To date, the county has raised more than $250,000 for the initiative.

It Can Wait Eye opening statistics and information on the dangers of distracted driving were at the forefront of a recent assembly program for the senior class at Rocky Point High School. During the program, guest speakers Karen Torres and Ryan McCready
spoke candidly about the subject matter and how it has directly impacted their lives. Ms. Torres shared how a distracted driver tragically killed her father and Ryan spoke about how his choice to drive while impaired by drugs forever changed the course of his life.
As a follow up to the program, the building’s SADD club encouraged students to sign a pledge to refrain from actions that would distract them while driving. The banner will be placed on display in the main lobby to serve as a daily reminder for the entire student body.
Ward Melville High School student-musicians regularly impress audiences with their talents and many were selected this fall to showcase their capabilities throughout New York as part of the 2014 All-County and AllState Music Festivals. As a result of their outstanding scores at the 2014 NYSSMA solo
and ensemble festival, 48 juniors and seniors were selected for the All-County Music Festival and 29 were chosen as participants or alternates at this year’s NYSSMA All-State Conference in Rochester, NY. In addition to the individual students selected, the school’s award winning chamber
orchestra has been invited to perform at the All-State conference. Last year the ensemble, directed by Philip Gelfer, submitted several audition pieces as well as a list of competitions attended in the last two years. A panel of judges selected the group as the only string orchestra to be represented at the conference.

Stony Brook Village Center has a new library in town – a mini one that is – with a unique premise for visitors to enjoy. Located in the serene Inner Court section of the Village, where visitors can sit in an outdoor setting by a flowing waterfall, this “Little Free Library” offers young and old the chance to literally “take a book, leave
a book” and share all kinds of literature from fiction to history to children’s books. The “Little Free Library” concept is widespread throughout the country with over 30,000 now in use. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization asked long-time Stony Brook resident and talented wood carver, Ron

On September 9th, the Town Board voted unanimously during a public hearing to designate the “Timothy Smith House and Granary” in Setauket as a Historic Town Landmark. The new legislation was sponsored by Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright. The Timothy Smith House, located at 55 Main Street, dates back to c. 1695 and was purchased by Timothy Smith (17301790) in 1780. His father, Daniel, who also lived in the home, owned a significant amount of land in Brookhaven and served as Town Clerk for 36 years from 1739-1775. His sons, Amos and Elijah, also served as Brookhaven Town Clerk from 1776-1782 and 1783-1788 respectively. Documents in the Smith Papers (Long Island Collection, Easthampton Library) indicate that both Timothy and his brother, Elijah acted as witnesses for the Town Clerk on several occasions. “I want to thank Assemblyman Englebright and members of the community for bringing this property to my
attention, and the Law Department and Barbara Russell, our Town Historian for the research and hard work that contributed to this designation,” said Councilwoman Cartright. “The rich history of the Timothy Smith House now has the honor of a Historic Landmark designation of which it is worthy.” The history of the Timothy Smith House includes stories of the family hiding weapons and valuables during the Revolutionary War when subjected to searches by British soldiers. Also on the property is a cemetery, the final resting place of many Smith family ancestors including Amos, his wife and several of his children. “Dating from the end of the early colonial settlement period (1655-1700), the Smith Homestead is a rare and noteworthy structure for both its history and excellent condition. The landmark status designation of the Smith Homestead with its cemetery dating back to the early 1700s underscores the important place this structure has in the
beginnings of the Town of Brookhaven and Setauket,“ stated Assemblyman Steve Englebright. “In addition to upholding our national heritage, historic building preservation is a cornerstone of smart growth,” commented Shawn Nuzzo, President of the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook. “The landmark designation allows for historic buildings to be renovated without having to conform with the stringent building codes of today. Often those modernization costs would be prohibitively expensive for an owner, making a complete teardown a more cost-effective, albeit unfortunate, option.” “The Timothy Smith house in Setauket represents a link with our early history in Brookhaven Town,” said Barbara Russell, Town of Brookhaven Historian. “Timothy’s father, Daniel and his two brothers, Amos and Elijah served as Town Clerks successively from 1739 to 1788, using the house as Town Hall. It now has its rightful designation as a Town Landmark.”
Heading To Harvard Rocky Point High School senior and wrestling phenom Thomas Dutton recently committed to continue his education and athletic career at Harvard University this fall. Dutton, a member of the varsity wrestling team since the seventh-grade, has accrued numerous accolades throughout his athletic career. He is a five
time league and All-County champion, a two time AllState champion, the 2013 Suffolk County champion, a two time All-American and is currently ranked ninth in the country. With 218 wins under his belt he is also well on his way to beat the Long Island record of 227 wins. In addition to his impressive wrestling
career, Dutton is also member of the school’s athletes helping athletes, varsity club, national honor society and the New York State math honor society as well as an advanced placement student. He plans to major in business management or economics at Harvard.

Education Conference Set The Department of Child Study at St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in conjunction with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), will host the conference, “Educating All: Addressing Issues and Overcoming Challenges” on Friday, November 7th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on its Long Island Campus located in Patchogue, New York. The keynote speaker
for this year’s conference is John Elder Robison, author and advocate. Robison, who has autism spectrum disorder, is a Neurodiversity Scholar at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is a bestselling author of Look Me in the Eye, Be Different and Raising Cubby, which are the most popular books on living with autism spectrum disorders and will
be available for purchase at the event. Robison will also teach a workshop at the conference. He has been interviewed on CBS News, The Today Show and NPR. “This year’s conference will offer a variety of workshops on best practices and resources for educators and parents,” said S. Mary Ann Cashin, chair of the Department of Child Study at SJC. “We are eager to hear about

In celebration of fire safety month, elementary students throughout the Three Village School District learned how to stay safe in the case of an emergency with the help of the local fire departments. At Minnesauke Elementary School, representatives from the Setauket Fire Department spoke with
the kindergarten through second-graders about the protective gear firefighters wear when entering a burning building and the importance of having a predetermined escape plan in the event of a fire. Following the discussion, the students had the chance to step aboard an actual fire truck and take an up-close look at the
equipment the firefighters use. At the end of the visit, students received a commemorative firefighter hat and activity book. They were also encouraged to share the lessons they learned during the program with their family and friends.
Origami Project To mark the centennial anniversary of the passenger pigeon’s extinction, Stacy Schuman’s art class at the Port Jefferson Middle School made more than 500 origami birds that symbolically represent the great flock from 100 years ago.
The pigeon project was organized by Schuman in collaboration with the Lost Bird Project, which aims to assemble a virtual flock of the 1 million passenger pigeons that once accounted for up to 40 percent of all land birds in North America. The students’ origami

pigeons were all named Martha, in memory of the last known captive passenger pigeon who died in 1914. “I wanted to both raise student awareness of the environment and also introduce the origami art form,” said Schuman.

Exploring Law Enforcement “I wanted students to hear directly from a law enforcement officer about the law as it applies to the real world,” Giannusa said. As well as speaking about her role as a resource officer in Suffolk County schools, Officer Dwyer discussed her professional experiences, her perspective on current events within the law, the motivation and steps needed to become a police
officer and the recently legislated Dignity for All Students Act. “Students learned that working in law enforcement is a difficult job with a lot of stresses,” Giannusa said. “Yet it is also a job that can have a lot of rewards when working with and helping young adults and other members of the community.”

Conference in Rochester this December. The four All-State musicians each received a perfect score on their level 6 NYSSMA solos, which according to their music teachers is true testament to their musical talents and dedication to their craft.

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office graduated thirtyseven recruits from Class 14-154 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Tuesday, October 7th. As recruits of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated a demanding thirteen week training program. During their Academy instruction, all
recruits are required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. They are also required to complete a community service project. Class 14-154 collected school supplies for Little Flower Children Services in Wading River and
