And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? • Maintain social
distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. Despite the COVID-19 virus, Halloween enthusiasts can find ways to be safe and have fun this year.

the Three Village Historical Society which presents the little known Culper Spy Ring, centered in Setauket, that was active during the American Revolution from 1778 to 1783. This is the story of the Culper Spy Ring When the Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776, some Americans wanted to fight for independence from Great Britain and King George III. Those who favored independence were called patriots and those who supported the British were known as loyalists. George Washington suffered heavy losses at the first major battle in Brooklyn, resulting in British occupation of Long Island. He realized that credible information about British troop movements was vital in preparing a successful campaign. Washington sent Captain Nathan Hale to Long Island to discover British plans. Hale’s ineffectiveness as a spy, his capture and execution, provided a framework for the development of a more effective intelligence operation. Over the next two years Washington struggled to establish a more reliable system. In 1778 George
Washington asked Benjamin Tallmadge, his new Chief of Intelligence, to organize a network of spies now known as the Culper Spy Ring. To accomplish this, Tallmadge needed spies he could trust. He recruited his childhood friends from Setauket, where he grew up. The Spies!: How a Group of Long Island Patriots Helped George Washington Win the Revolution interactive exhibit at the Three Village Historical Society presents the Setauket-based Culper Spy Ring which was active during the American Revolution from 1778 to 1783. The Three Village Historical Society is a long-lasting non-profit organization that works within the community to explore local history through education. Educational programs are developed by collecting and preserving artifacts, documents, and other materials of local significance. Ongoing research is conducted about the history of the people who have lived, from earliest habitation to modern times, in the Three Village area. How to Safely Trick-or-Treat this Halloween Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and highrisk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-ortreating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t formally ban trick-ortreating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids door-todoor either. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic. 1. Staying 6 feet away

while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised.
5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-or-treating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties! 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

How To Prepare And Cook Pumpkin Seeds Nutrition and Halloween do not necessarily go hand in hand. While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngsters’ Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed kids’ hauls still tends to be candy. Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat. According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall wellbeing, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that a single cup of pumpkin seeds can provide as much as 22 percent of a person’s daily recommended value of dietary fiber. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and
helps to regulate blood calcium levels. Pumpkin seeds tend to be easily accessible come Halloween, as they’re right inside the pumpkins many who celebrate this ghoulish holiday turn into jacko’-lanterns. When carving pumpkins this Halloween, people can forgo relegating pumpkin seeds to the garbage can in favor of cooking them. Whole Foods notes researchers found that roasting pumpkin seeds for more than 20 minutes can lead to unwanted changes in the fat structure of the seeds. To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes. Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

While still embracing physical distancing guidelines and safety procedures, Ward Melville High School’s Marching Band has continued to keep the beat and perfect their performance skills as they learned a new routine for the 2020-21 school year. This year’s theme “A Message of Hope,” includes up-beat musical numbers and perfectly choreographed color guard routines. The students provided a preview of their show to immediate family during a recent closed evening performance held outdoors on the football field and in accordance with physical distancing guidelines. Additionally, a pre-recorded portion of the marching band’s show was included in this year’s virtually run Columbus Day Parade, which aired on ABC 7. According to Moongiant.com, a full moon on Halloween happens an average of just once every 18 or 19 years. That means Halloween celebrants will likely only witness a full moon on Halloween five times every century. This year’s All Kids Fair, which will take place from 11 AM – 4 PM, will have a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes will be: Incredibles Entertainment, Science Party, Captain America Entertainment, Intro to Chess, and an Adventure Style Class. For the adults, there will be classes on essential oils, avoiding sugar in your children’s diet, and financial planning. Since families always enjoy our petting zoo, this year there will be several virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey will be the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” will be highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event are “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler, elementary age, middle school age, special needs, and gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the
time is right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It’s definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It is a fullfledged virtual expo. We have incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our ‘virtual live animal visits’ and ‘coffee talks.’ We are sure that families will have a great time learning about many classes, services and products available to them.” Multi-year sponsor and exhibitor Jennifer Keegan, owner of Your Local Kids Source magazine, shared her thoughts on this event. “After a year full of ups and downs, we are looking forward to an opportunity to connect with Long Island parents and help them find the resources their family needs now. Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense. Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission. What Is Herd Immunity? Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19,
the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, whether it is a bacteria or virus, that disease has nowhere to go and the spread stalls, according to WebMD. How Does Herd Immunity Occur? There are two ways that herd immunity can occur. The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body
is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection. Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown - fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those
who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities. When Is Herd Immunity Reached? When enough of a population is immune to a pathogen it prevents further spread and herd immunity is apparent. Diseases are different and herd immunity is reached based on the pathogen’s reproduction number, or R0. Essentially this boils down to how contagious the pathogen in question
is. WebMD says the R0 tells the average number of people that a single person with the virus can infect if those people aren’t already immune. The higher the R0, the greater number of people will need to be resistant to reach herd immunity. Measles, which is very contagious at an R0 of 12 to 18, requires 93 to 95 percent of the population to be immune for herd immunity to be reached. The World Health Organization estimates the R0 for COVID-19 to be between 2 and 3. This means between 40 and 70 percent of the population will need to be immune
to halt the spread. In the case of COVID-19, it’s still unclear whether anyone can get reinfected, and whether antibodies produced for one strain can fend off another strain of this novel coronavirus. This reinfection mystery is what makes herd immunity - both through a vaccine or through natural exposure - challenging for epidemiologists in relation to COVID-19. Herd immunity is an important factor in disease prevention. Getting the facts about this phenomenon is important.
