Miller Place School District’s Miller Place High School and North Country Road Middle School students were recently introduced to “Speak Life,” a comprehensive bullying and violence prevention program that uses the arts to convey the importance of standing up for others. The event was broken down into three parts: The Show, The Challenge and the Cast Q&A. Students first watched a Broadwaystyle production, then were challenged to make a difference in their own community and shared personal stories with the cast. Miscellaneous Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been awhile since I’ve thrown together one of my random, rambling columns, touching on this, that and the other thing. Here goes… Baseball in October, that annual celebration of excellence that us Yankees fans have been fortunate to experience, well, annually for the most part. Congratulations to our New York neighbors, the Mets, for holding it together just long enough to make their longsuffering fans believe. Let’s hope the ride continues into the next round; but, either way, a proud showing. Football in October, well, that’s a different story entirely. The season is still

less than halfway over, and up until just a few weeks ago, tailgating could have been comfortably enjoyed in t-shirts and shorts. But no more. Break out the sweaters and scarves, boots and gloves – it’s gonna be a chilly few months ahead. Speaking of, have you made your Christmas shopping lists yet? What are you waiting for? At this rate, the bathing suits for next summer will be out on the racks in a matter of weeks. Forget Autumn – holiday season is upon us, with various countdowns marking the minutes until Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. {For those inquiring readers, Buddy the Betta, who just celebrated his

eight-month birthday, is eagerly looking forward to his very ﬁrst holiday season. Perhaps I’ll decorate his tiny plant and string some lights on his bowl. He’s still patiently awaiting his sixmonth birthday shopping spree – something about wanting a “mini-castle” to sleep in. He’s also highly offended that no one noticed his addition to our staff box several weeks ago and is refusing to write another guest column, in protest.} Me, I’m looking forward to my own fall shopping spree. There’s something about the change of seasons and the transition of weather that calls for some new apparel, don’t you think? If only I had room to stuff one more thing in my closet…

I am alarmed by the large number of kids in my school who, in recent days, have claimed that America should keep to itself and out of world affairs. Some have even gone as far as to say that we should be completely isolationist. I have heard this argued in debates at the debate club I helped start at my school, and in my Ethics class. I consider myself to be well-versed in American history so, for a moment, let’s look back to times when America didn’t lead in the world: 6 million Jews died in German concentration camps, Soviets invaded Afghanistan, Americans were taken hostage and held for over a year in Iran, 800,000 Rwandans were killed

over a 100 day period, 350,000 Bosnians were killed in the bloody genocidal regime of Slobodan Milosevic, and now we have ISIS, which has formed as a result of decreased U.S. military presence in Iraq. Students reason this way because they claim America is too aggressive, arrogant and has caused more harm than good, of course drawing all of their evidence off the Iraq War. Though some of this may be true, millions have died when we don’t take a leadership role in the world. That’s not being an arrogant American - that’s the truth. But can the students really be blamed? In classrooms, students are fed this information in AP U.S.

History courses that have a curriculum that is heavily liberally biased and cannot be changed. Though it has reformed lately, it has claimed that we fulfilled manifest destiny to flex our “culturally superior” muscle and that the end of the Cold War should be mainly attributed to Mikhail Gorbachev, not to Ronald Reagan, whose arms race and build-up ultimately caused the Soviet Union to go broke. So there it is - the question is answered, students can’t be blamed. Unless they do an extensive amount of studies on their own time, they will not realize that if America doesn’t lead, the world will fall apart.

The Three Village Central School District has appointed veteran educator and longstanding employee Anthony J. Pollera as its new coordinating chairperson of music. Mr. Pollera joined the district in 2002 as a teacher of chorus and chamber choir as well as the director of the R.C. Murphy Junior High School musical theatre program. Under his direction, the ninth-grade chamber choir has received first place at Music in the Parks competition seven times as well as the prestigious Espirit De Corps Award given to students at the competition who demonstrate significant respect, cooperation and consideration of each other, other student groups and teachers at the festival. For the past three years, he has been one of the lead music teachers in the district and has directed and organized countless events in the Three Village community throughout his tenure. Mr. Pollera received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan and his Master’s Degree from Stony Brook University. He has been

National Attention Ward Melville High School student-artists have already made their mark on the national stage this school year. A project created by Grace Zhang during her AP Studio 2D class last year, was chosen for the cover art for a book – Portal of Vaal – written by Andrew Daly, a 16-year-old North Carolina boy. The book is currently being sold on Amazon. Several films created by Grace and Henry DaCosta were selected for this year’s All-American Film Festival in New York City this October. Henry’s film,

“Life Forms”, takes a look into the subconscious of a teenage boy questioning his place in society and the existential questions of life. Three of Grace’s films were selected for feature in the festival. “Pretty Girls” is a documentary short about the narrow-minded ideals of Asian beauty standards; “Rebirth” is an experimental dance short symbolizing a violent metamorphosis as one loses purity in the transition from childhood to adulthood; and “Suburban Artifice”, was a love letter to suburbia in

faded pastels. The All-American high school film festival received thousands of film submissions from 48 states and 17 countries, which were narrowed down to approximately 200 submissions that will be screened at the AMC Empire 25 Theater in Time Square. Lastly, Ward Melville High School’s 2015 yearbook, Invictus, earned an All-American Honor Rating with four marks of distinction from the National Scholastic Press Association.

AP Scholars Named As a result of their academic achievements on their Advanced Placement exams, 70 current Rocky Point High School students and members of the Class of 2015 have been named Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. A total of 21 students were named AP Scholars with Distinction, as they received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and a score of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Thirteen students were

given the distinction of AP Scholar with Honor, as they received an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Thirty-six students were named AP Scholars, as they received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. Of these students, two graduates – Lauren McBrearty and Joseph Niver – also earned the highest honor of National AP Scholar, as they received an average score of at least 4 on all

AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. The Rocky Point School District offers 16 AP courses that provide students with the opportunity to take college-level classes while still enrolled in high school. Classes span such core subjects as chemistry and calculus as well as electives including music theory and Italian language and culture. Students who receive a passing grade on an AP exam may be eligible for future college credit.

STEM Finalist

Rocky Point High School freshman Bryant Michael Liu has been named one of 30 finalists in the 2015 Broadcom MASTERS middle school science competition and was the

only honoree from Long Island. Bryant will now compete in the final round of judging in the San Francisco Bay Area in early October. During this event, he will present his original research project to judges and the public, and will compete in hands-on STEM challenge activities with his fellow finalists. Bryant was selected for this honor based on his 2014-15 science fair project – The Effects of Pretreatment on the Release of Simple Sugars

More than 2,200 students entered this year’s competition, each representing the top 10% of projects at their local science fairs. As a result of their musical talents, several Rocky Point High School students have been selected to perform at regional and state-level festivals. Based on their outstanding scores at last year’s NYSSMA solo and ensemble festival along with teacher recommendations, Nicolas Amato (symphonic band), Breanna Garske (mixed

choir), Samantha Giacoia (women’s choir), Nicholas LoCastro (mixed choir), Thomas Loomis (mixed choir), Prima Mandolfo (women’s choir), Daniel Infranco (symphonic band/ mixed choir), Rosa Valente (mixed choir) and Justin Zorcik (symphonic band) will represent the district at the NYSCAME AllCounty Music Festival. Daniel Infranco and

Thomas Loomis were also selected to perform at the NYSSMA All-State Music Conference. Thomas will perform with the mixed chorus and Daniel, who was selected for two groups, will perform with the symphony orchestra. Both students received a score of 100 on their solo performances.

On Wednesday, October 21st, the Port Jefferson School District will host a college admissions panel at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Beginning at 7 p.m., admissions representatives from Fordham University, Queens College, Suffolk County Community College and SUNY Stony Brook will discuss topics including the college essay, submission of the application, the college visit, college entrance exams and academic credentials. Scheduled to speak at the panel are Richard P. Alvarez - Vice President for Enrollment and Student Retention at Queens College, Patricia Peek, Ph.D., Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Fordham University, Robert Pertusati, Undergraduate Admissions representative from SUNY Stony Brook and Theresa Saladino, Director of Admissions of Suffolk County Community College.

Students worked with their teachers at various locations along the river to simultaneously collect scientific information, analyze it and share it to portray the status of the river and estuary ecosystems. They used hands-on field techniques to describe their sites, catch fish in nets, collect water and invertebrate samples, develop a biodiversity inventory of the riparian zone and analyze water chemistry. They also examined the physical and chemical aspects of each

aquatic ecosystem, such as where freshwater and salty seawater meet, the amount of sediments in the water, nitrates, phosphates and turbidity and oxygen levels, as well as conduct biodiversity inventories of the flora and fauna in and around the rivers and estuary. The project was joint event sponsored by Brookhaven National Lab, the NYDEC, SCWA and Central Pine Barrens Commission. This is the second year Gelinas has participated in the project.

Cultivating Kindness Inspirational speaker and founder of the Rees Specht Life foundation Richard Specht recently spoke with the students at Minnesauke and Arrowhead Elementary Schools in the Three Village Central School District about a superpower each of them have – the ability to cultivate kindness through even the smalls acts. Mr. Specht recounted

how the acts of kindness his family received in the wake of tragedy, has grown into a worldwide movement dedicated to the memory of his son whose nickname was Rees. In addition to sharing a piece of his original book “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” Mr. Specht wove in an unique and scientific explanation

on how the ability to change the worlds is something that all can achieve, provided they have the right perspective. At the end of the program, the students were challenged to go out and make the world a better place and received Pay it Forward/ Seeds of Kindness cards to help keep the kindness movement going.

Inspirational Author Three Village Central School District’s elementary school students had the chance to learn about the world of journalism and the importance role education played one author’s life when Tim Green visited the district. The New York Times bestselling author, who is also a lawyer and former professional football star, spoke with the school’s sixth grade classes in a joint assembly at Ward Melville High School about how his start as an author, as well as the passion and

determination behind all of his life choices. Throughout the assembly, Mr. Green stressed the importance of education as he compared reading to “weight lifting for the brain.” He pointed out that although luck may play a role in one’s success, the true defining characteristics of an achieving individual are talent and work ethic. He also shared an excerpt from his book “Kid Owner.” “I’m here today to further your teacher’s mission – to make you a better person, both in your mind and

through your character, and encourage you to be successful” Mr. Green told the students. “Always remember, anything you have in life comes at a price and that price is work.” R.C. The Rocky Point community was filled with Eagle Pride as students, parents, faculty and residents filled the bleachers on October 10th to cheer for the hometown athletes and celebrate homecoming 2015. The annual homecoming parade that began at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School served as the kickoff to the weekend’s activities, which included numerous athletic games and a community fair.

The theme of this year’s parade was 80’s video games and included grade level floats showcasing Sonic the Hedgehog (freshmen), Donkey Kong (sophomores), Mario Bros. (juniors) and Pac Man (seniors). Marching in this year’s parade were the Rocky Point cheerleading teams, marching band, as well as other student organizations that rallied in support of the district’s sports teams. In addition,

As they prepare to decide on their post-high school plans, Melville High School seniors have the opportunity to explore the variety of programs offered at nearly 80 post-secondary institutions without ever leaving campus. The on-site college visitation program helps to connect the soonto-be graduates with

representatives from schools from across the nation in small group settings during the school day. The periodlong meetings focus on the schools’ application process, areas of study and the opportunities offered beyond core academics. Later in the fall, seniors will have the chance to meet with these and

Kindness & Compassion other representatives as part of the school’s onsite admissions program. During these events, participating college admission representatives will meet with applicants to conduct personal interviews, evaluate their applications and ultimately render a decision for acceptance.

As part of the school’s character education program – which is modeled after the national Rachel’s Challenge program – Nassakeag Elementary School students and staff have once again pledged to cause a chain reaction of kindness. Shortly after the start of the school year, individuals across the Three Village school documented their

joint effort toward creating an inclusive environment and promoting compassion for others by signing a large banner displayed in the main hallway of the school. Awareness for the yearlong initiative kicked off during an interactive assembly with musical storyteller Lou Del Bianco called “Make a Good Choice.” During

Ward Melville High School student-musicians have captured regional, state and national honors this fall and are bound to showcase their talents among their peers in renowned festivals in the coming months. As a result of their outstanding scores at the 2015 NYSSMA solo and ensemble festival, more

than 40 juniors and seniors were selected for the AllCounty Music Festival and 24 were chosen as participants or alternates at this year’s NYSSMA All-State Conference in Rochester, New York. Additionally, seniors Matt Hoffman and Rajiv Moturu were chosen as members of the National Association for Music

Education All-National Honor Ensembles program through a rigorous selection process. Matt will take part in the mixed choir for tenor 1 and Rajiv the symphony orchestra for violin. The ensembles’ final performances will be at the historic Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.

Minnesauke Elementary School captured the top prize during this year’s Emma S. Clark Library Summer Reading program. With 14 percent percent of the school’s student population participating in the initiative, Minnesauke earned the first ever

“Emma Cup” in honor the student’s reading achievements. To be considered for the program, which was open to all elementaryaged children in the areas, individuals were challenged to read at least seven books during
