t was a week jam-packed with school spirit as the Port Jefferson School District came together to share in the homecoming festivities. Starting with spirit week, followed by a pep rally and bonfire, the celebration culminated at the football game at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Spirit week kicked off with students showing their school pride by wearing school colors. At the pep rally, Ji-Won Woo and Brian Mark were crowned homecoming queen and king.

On September 29th, the Town of Brookhaven Honored AMVETS National Commander Harold Chapman with a proclamation presented by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy also presented Harold with a proclamation. In addition, many members of AMVETS Post 48 Harold’s home Post were in attendance to help him celebrate his election as National Commander. During the Ceremony it was pointed out that Harold is the 73rd AMVETS National Commander and the organization’s first National Commander from the Brookhaven Township. Chapman is an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the United States Air Force whose Vietnam War-Era Service includes postings at air bases in California and Texas as well as 18 months spent in the Pacific Theater. At the National Level he has held the office of 1st Vice Commander (2015-2016), 2nd Vice Commander (2014-2015) and National Finance Officer (2012-2014). As a New York State AMVET Harold has held many Command Positions at the Post and State Level which culminated with his election as NYS Commander (2002-2003). AMVETS will be celebrating the 70th Anniversary of its’ Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23rd, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport

National Commander Honored

Making Strides Against Cancer More than 3,000 participants are expected at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus on Sunday, October 23rd, for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) premier event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship. “We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to remember

those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. On the National Level Harold is concerned about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1.800.273.8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the only Veterans Service Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of

whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. AMVET Volunteers have logged over 158,000 hours at VA Facilities Nationwide during the 2015 year and AMVETS has raised more than $350,000 to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Wall and is currently working diligently to see a monument to Gulf War Veterans tro be placed in the National Wall in Washington, DC. A former U.S. Embassy in Columbia employee, Francisco left his family and came to the United States in the 1990s to learn English. Not long after arriving, he “fell in with the wrong crowd” and developed a substance abuse problem.

There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community honored resident Jan Parker at its Monte Carlo Night fundraiser late last month. The annual evening of food, music, and Monte Carlo-style casino games supports the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation, which provides funds for capital projects, and assists residents and employees in need. This year’s event benefitted the Foundation’s Resident Assistance Fund. Jan

Parker, who received the Humanitarian of the Year Award, has long provided generous support for the Foundation, as well as many other charitable organizations both on Long Island and around the world. The Resident Assistance Fund plays a critical role at Jefferson’s Ferry. It provides an extra layer of security to the Jefferson’s Ferry lifecare retirement promise by covering the monthly fees of residents who have outlived their

assets or experience an unanticipated financial need through no fault of his or her own. Monte Carlo Night is the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s largest fundraising event, which hosts about 250 people each year. Revenue from ticket sales and the proceeds from games and raffles help fund Foundation initiatives. This year, nearly $64,000 was raised for the Resident Assistance Fund. “The Resident Assistance Fund was established to protect the peace of mind that our lifestyle offers residents,” said Bob Caulfield, President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of so many friends and families both within and outside the community who support the fund and other activities of the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation.” Honoree Jan Parker is a lifelong educator and humanitarian who

has made a difference in the lives of many. A college teacher for 50 years, Jan taught economics at Wellesley, Wheaton, Sweet Briar and Suffolk Community colleges, among others. At Jefferson’s Ferry, she pioneered the establishment of the charitable gift annuity program and several matching grants to facilitate improvements to the Healthy Living Center and to build up the Resident Assistance Fund. Since joining Jefferson’s Ferry, Jan has served on a large number of Resident Council committees, including the Budget and Finance, Parking Control, Conservation, Communication, Sunshine, and Country Store committees. She especially enjoys serving Country Store customers who are unable to shop off campus. Jan has served as a Trustee of the Jefferson Ferry Foundation since 2014.

Spirit Shines Through It was a week jam-packed with school spirit as the Port Jefferson School District came together to share in the homecoming festivities. Starting with spirit week, followed by a pep rally and bonfire, the celebration culminated at the football game on October 8th at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School. Spirit week kicked off on October 5th, with students showing their school pride by wearing school colors. At the pep rally, Ji-Won Woo and Brian Mark were crowned homecoming queen and king. Prior to the Royals taking on the Center Moriches

Red Devils, the four high school classes showed off their creative sides at the homecoming parade, displaying floats that represented the different elements – earth, wind, fire and water – as they marched down Barnum Avenue and Main Street. The rainy conditions didn’t dampen the spirit of the Royals football team as they took an early lead and never let it go. With an eight-point lead going into halftime, the Royals remained strong and won the game 36-20. After a performance by the Port Jefferson youth cheerleaders, a Wall of Fame

induction ceremony was held on the track. This year’s inductees were Irving Wilson Ritch Jr., Class of 1904 and Charles Wilson, Class of 1977. Ritch was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War I who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefields of France in 1918. He was the first Port Jefferson alumnus killed in action. The American Legion Post 432 is named in honor of him. Wilson, a police officer and sergeant, was a 9/11 responder who saved many lives by displaying unwavering courage during the tragic events.

Servicing Those Who Served

On October 7th, approximately 500 people attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Third Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration hosted by Brookhaven’s Hispanic Advisory Board. During the celebration of Hispanic culture, 102 high school seniors from 14 school districts throughout Brookhaven were honored for achieving a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

Also honored during the celebration were Francis Valdez Rodriguez, who is the successful business owner of 112 Tequila Deli in Coram, and Major League Baseball Player and 2009 Patchogue-Medford High School graduate Marcus Earl Stroman. In 2013, Supervisor Romaine established the first Hispanic Advisory Board in the Town of Brookhaven to help improve cultural

understanding between the Hispanic community, civic and business leaders, Brookhaven government, and Town residents. The Hispanic Advisory Board serves as a sounding board to the Town Board and provides viable recommendations on policies that advance the social and economic wellbeing of Hispanics and all citizens in the Town of Brookhaven.

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”
