Three Village Homecoming the stations included was a hair dying tent for fans to add specks of green and yellow to their locks along with a dunk tank, bounce houses, face painting and many other tables to help support high school clubs. The high school cheerleading teams also hosted a pregame clinic for the youth of

Three Village Homecoming Continued From 3 football game, both the junior varsity and varsity field hockey teams hosted games on the turf adjacent to the stadium field. Each team hosted Garden City as fans bounced back between both fields to cheer on the hometown Patriots.
Following the entrance of the marching band and the parading of banners by each elementary school in honor of the event, the football team took the field in match-up against Walt Whitman. The Patriots went on to a 3210 victory, as senior Trey Berry passed for 108 yards with three touchdowns

Enjoy the “Doing.” Release the Result. “Let your joy be in your journey, not in some distant goal.” - Tim Cook One evening, about a year ago, I was sitting at the dinner table with my nine year old son, when he said, “Hey Mom, let’s play truth or dare!” Wanting to steer clear of any mishaps during dinner, I opted for “truth,” to which he gave me the long face and said, “Oh, c’mon mom, pick dare.” Reluctantly I said, “Okay, dare.” Knowing boys, I hoped it would be something fairly tame. My son pondered his options and with a mischievous grin, he said, “I dare you to make the nicest picture you’ve ever made in your life, and then rip it up!” In his nine year old mind, asking me to create something and then rip it to pieces was an ultimate triple dog dare. We’ve all seen how young kids react if they are building a tall tower with blocks and something or someone comes along and knocks it over. Forget about it! It’s DEFCON 1. I asked my son for a piece of white construction paper and
crayons. As we continued with dinner, I put crayons to paper, honing in on the most beautiful garden scene I could think up. I then colored my way to paradise. I meticulously drew the green grass and flowers; the blue sky and sun; the cascading birds flying by; I even did my best to draw a little country cottage. The picture was beautiful upon its completion. I held it up to show my son. “Well? What do you think? You like?” He was impressed and said, “Yeah mom, that’s actually a really nice picture. I love it.” I looked at the finished product, once again, to savor my hard work. Then, as requested, I tore it in half. No sooner did I do that, my son, dribbling food out of his mouth, screamed, “What’d you do that for?! Why’d you tear it up?!” He was horrified at the calm and swift nature of my action. I looked at him and said, “What do you mean? You dared me to make the nicest picture I’ve ever made and then tear it up. What’s the problem?” He couldn’t understand why or how I was able to do that so calmly. I looked at
it as a teachable moment (I live for those, in case you haven’t noticed). I explained that the joy was in the experience of creating the picture. The end result was merely icing on the cake; immaterial. If you live that way, no one can hurt you; no one can touch you. Alternatively, if you are married to a particular result, you’re vulnerable to disappointments and sadness when things don’t turn out exactly the way you want them to. You’re on a roller coaster ride dictated by your everchanging surroundings, as well as other people’s opinions. If you find your joy and fulfillment within, in the doing, outside results or conditions, unpredictable as they may be, will have less power to affect your state of well being. I said to my son, “I enjoyed thinking up the scenery for the picture. I delighted in choosing the colors I would use to create it and watching the picture come to life. I loved the experience of creating the picture. The end result was wonderful, but I don’t need it.”
The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Since their founding in 1995, they have reached almost 350,000 high school and college students, parents, coworkers and neighbors with lifesaving information on breast health; expanded their reach internationally, training their first breast health educator from outside the United States; annually educated over 200,000 people across the world on their website; and trained breast health educators in local nursing programs, exponentially increasing their impact on Long Island. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here are a few ways you can get involved with this organziation! Looking to increase your awareness about breast cancer this month? You can do so by visiting www.MaurerFoundation.org and viewing their list of Statistics. Don’t become a statistic: Reduce your chances of being diagnosed by educating yourself on the risk factors of breast cancer and taking action on the factors that you have control of, like smoking and obesity. Later stage detection and advanced tumor size does decrease your odds of surviving breast cancer. You can improve your odds of survival by practicing early detection. Do a monthly breast selfexam, a yearly clinical breast exam and after 40, a yearly mammogram. Looking to support a breast cancer organization this month? The Maurer Foundation is holding their
Cocktails for a Cause event, which will take place on October 23rd at Havana Central Restaurant in Garden City from 6-8PM. Paula Abdul: Inside the Heart of a Pop Music Legend By Allison Kugel
On October 3rd, Paula Abdul hit the road on her North American tour; a tour that’s been more than twentyfive years in the making, since her 1992 Under My Spell tour which grossed $60 million in ticket sales (a mint by 1992 standards), yet also yielded some tragedy that almost sidelined the beloved performer forever. The world knows Paula as the plucky, iconic dancer and pop star turned American Idol judge, turned legacy performer. What people may not know is that this Grammy-winning legend had to climb a mountain of adversity, both physical and emotional, to dance again... Allison Kugel: You’ve said that when it comes to your choreography, you would often dream the dance steps up in your mind, and then run to the bathroom mirror and go through the steps that you’d already envisioned. Do you feel that when it comes to your choreography, it’s being channeled through you, like it’s coming from some higher source?
Allison Kugel: Is there anything else you feel you are still here to accomplish or experience, that has yet to be done? Paula Abdul: I really want to do some more producing, both in television
attention now, as I’ve gotten older, to those signs the universe gives me.
Allison Kugel: Let’s talk about your tour, Straight Up Paula!. Are you going to make each song’s choreography and costumes reminiscent of the original music videos, or will you change it up to reflect present day?
Paula Abdul: I definitely do. I feel that’s one of my biggest contributions. That’s what people herald me as doing, and it’s nice to know that. It’s nice to know that you can create and spark those kinds of dance crazes, but also that they can stand the test of time. A lot of dancers will say, “You’re American Music Awards dance opening numbers are ‘almanac.’” (Laughs) And artists that will say, “Man, I watched and learned everything that you ever did.” It’s wonderful to hear that.
Paula Abdul: It will be a little of both. I know that fans come to hear those songs, and they will, but I’m not doing a direct replication of those [music] videos. There is a nod to them, with a little bit of nostalgia. But for me, this is an opportunity to create my own vision of what I want to do in terms of interpreting the songs. I’m incorporating lots of technology and multimedia, and with some storytelling as well. I’m also going to cover some fun things, and some not so fun things, from my life in this show. It’s giving people a little bit more insight into who I am, and the career I’ve had. Allison Kugel: I ask this question of everyone, because I learn so much about people through this question… when you pray, who or what do you pray to? Paula Abdul: I believe in God, and I do pray to God. But I am also spiritual in the sense that I know I have angels around me, and I know to pay attention to the signs I get from the universe. I used to not pay attention to the signs that were right in front of me. I feel that I finally get it. I do pay
Allison Kugel: Do you see yourself as a pioneer with putting dance at the forefront of the pop music industry?
Allison Kugel: You came into the business as a dancer, and as a choreographer, and then you ventured into recording music. At that time, although you were extremely commercially successful, you had your share of critics. A lot of other artists at the time said, “She’s really a dancer, just trying to be a singer. She’s off-key, she should stick to choreography…” How did you handle that kind of criticism back then, and how do you handle it now? Paula Abdul: I feel like being in this business for over thirty years, you learn how to handle constructive criticism, and just plain old, simple criticism. What I have learned is that, although I can’t just say what the formula is for success, because success is different for everyone, I do know that a recipe for failure is trying to please everyone. You never will. For me, I’m an entertainer that happened to resonate with millions of people. I’m grateful for that. I’ve never claimed to be the best at anything. I’m a constant, perpetual student, and I love learning. I love improving upon weaknesses and nurturing the strengths; and being able to draw upon inspiration from others. Allison Kugel: Why do you think you resonated the way you did with my generation; those of us who were coming of age in the late eighties and into the early to mid-nineties? Paula Abdul: I think the throughline of most of my success is my heart, and I think that it connects with other people’s hearts, especially women. I have this profound love affair with women. I’ve never been a threat to women. I have been very inclusive, and always thought the
most beautiful thing you can do is to recognize beauty in someone else and celebrate that. Because I was always an accessible type of artist, people felt that they knew me, and they do know me. Allison Kugel: Do you have a tenyear dream, as in, “in ten years I’d like to be retired, living on the beach.”? Do you have a plan like that, or is this the dream, to keep singing and dancing for as long as you can? Paula Abdul: I feel extremely grateful that I’m able to do this. I was sidelined for many, many years because the last time I was on tour I was in a terrible accident in a sevenseater jet. One of the engines blew up and the right wing caught on fire, and we plummeted. Allison Kugel: I don’t think many people out there are aware that you went through this ordeal. Were you belted in when the plane began to plummet? Paula Abdul: I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt. I was getting ready to put my seatbelt on, but I never made it and I hit my head on the [ceiling] of the plane. It caused me to have paralysis on my right side, and I endured fifteen cervical spinal surgeries. I went through all of that, mostly, privately. Back then, we didn’t have tabloids like we do now. We didn’t have the extent of paparazzi or the [internet], so you were able to contain some information. I was so afraid of being counted out and looked at as damaged goods. The problem was that, at the time, I was. I ended up having to take almost seven years off to have all these different neuro-surgeons operating on me. So, the fact that at this stage of my life, I’m able to do this, is the biggest
gift ever! I am living, in many ways, my dream. But I also would love to branch out into other areas. And I get as much joy behind the scenes as I do from being out in front. Allison Kugel: What do you hope audiences will experience when they come out to see you on the Straight Up Paula! tour? Paula Abdul: I hope during the show they feel a celebration of fond memories of their time growing up with me. I also hope people get a chance to know me further, and get a better sense of who I am, with my whimsical ways and my sense of humor. It’s going to be a nod to everything that has inspired me since I was young, and celebrating my career, with the ups and the downs, and everything in between. Students in the Port Jefferson School District took time during a recent Saturday to work on a mural in the district’s English as a New Language classroom. Not only adding color but a sense of unity was the goal when students and ENL teacher Jennifer Walling brainstormed ideas for the project. The undertaking was all designed, painted
and completed by the students, with studentartist Gabriela Sanchez managing the design of the globe and selecting the word “hello” in various languages that she wrote by hand. “We were inspired by a photo that we saw online and loved the multicultural hands as not only does it represent the world and bring us all together
but it signifies who we are as an ENL community,” said Ms. Walling. The languages represent the diverse cultural backgrounds of the students and the room’s festive artwork is an invitation to a mini haven for the students before or after school as well as during study halls and lunch periods.
Councilwoman Honors Eagle Scout On September 29th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner honored Boy Scouts Joseph DiBiasi (left photo) and Michael Muroff (right photo) from Troop 1776 of Mount Sinai for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. For their Eagle Scout projects, Michael made repairs and replacements to doors at the historic William Miller House and Joseph built

The Rocky Point School District came together to celebrate homecoming 2018 during the last weekend in September. Eagle fans of all ages lined the sidewalk in front of Rocky Point High School to cheer on those marching in the annual homecoming parade. This year’s event was led by Rocky Point alumni, who were celebrating their 40th anniversary, and featured

Language Arts Extravaganza Port Jefferson’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students had an interesting culmination to their summer reading project. After reading Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis,” they came together to discuss the famed piece of literary work. “We wanted to give students frequent, informal and meaningful
opportunities to test the waters of literary analysis and hone their skills,” said English teacher Eva Grasso. The process gave students a new understanding of the piece of literature being examined, as well as the process of literary analysis.” The in-class discussions for the students were opportunities to ask
questions, clarify confusions and share observations before taking part in a grade 9-12 interclass discussion to hear different viewpoints on the story’s character development, structure, style, symbolism and other content issues.
Port Jeff National Merit Honors Noted for demonstrating exceptional academic promise, five Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students have been named Commended Students in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Seniors Joshua Gelfond, Ju Eun Ha, Ryan Robertson, David Rotunno and Ava Schully, have been recognized for their outstanding performance on the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The students are among approximately 34,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

It’s All About That Bass!
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School student Jack Reilly had an exceptional musical experience when he attended the School of Orchestral Studies of the New York State Summer School of the Arts.
Jack, who plays bass, was part of a group of approximately 80 students with outstanding talent in instrumental music who were selected through a rigorous statewide audition process to participate in the prestigious program held at Skidmore College and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. During the fourweek program, he spent approximately 40 hours per week in rehearsals and performance and worked with instructors on developing his skills. He was coached in musicology and ensemble performance
in addition to attending seminars, lectures and concerts. Jack, a sophomore, began his musical studies at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School and credits music teacher Dr. Vanessa Salzman and Director of Music and Fine Arts Dr. Michael Caravello with his continued interest in perfecting his musical skills throughout his high school career.
Sound Beach Pet Adopt-A-Thon On Saturday, September 22nd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the Sound Beach Civic Association’s annual Pet Adopt-A-Thon. This year’s Adopt-A-Thon was dedicated to and renamed after Sal Mingoia, who lost his battle with cancer in 2017. Mingoia had attended every Adopt-A-Thon since the first one in 2012, and offered his musical talents with his daughter, Gina, to provide live entertainment for the event each year. To honor his life as
well as his great love for animals, the Sound Beach Civic Association has changed the name of the annual event to the Sal Mingoia Pet Adopt-AThon. “It was a pleasure to join the Mingoia Family and the Sound Beach Civic at the first annual Sal Mingoia Pet AdoptA-Thon,” said Legislator Anker. “Sal’s musical talent and generous spirit were felt throughout our community, and it was an honor to join his family in
celebrating his memory.” The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter, Grateful Greyhounds, Last Chance Animal Rescue, and Savea-Pet hosted booths where community members could adopt animals, learn about responsible pet care, and find important pet adoption resources. Twenty-two Ward Melville High School students have earned the distinct honor of being named Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students are among the more than twothirds of the approximate 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT. Commended Students are named on the basis
of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year. Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of those honored will become candidates for special scholarships offered by corporations and businesses. Port Jefferson Wall of Fame Earl L. Vandermeulen High School held a ceremony to celebrate the newest inductees into the school’s Wall of Fame on October 5th. The three honorees – Honor Gracey Kopcienski, David Okst and Heather West-Serignese – were recognized for their extraordinary achievements in the local community. The intimate ceremony, held in the school’s library, was followed by a tour of the building led by the school’s Student Organization. Introduced by Principal Christine Austen, who thanked them for their generosity and spirit and reiterated the importance of giving back to community, each honoree was lauded by a member of the Student Organization. They were presented with plaques to take home, enjoyed lunch and an unveiling of the plaques on the Wall of Fame. Students
from both Port Jefferson Middle School and the high school also learned about the honorees at the homecoming pep rally. Kopcienski, Class of 1950, who died in 2016, was honored posthumously. Her son Matthew (Class of 1989), daughter Elizabeth Schwartz (Class of 1972), and son-in-law Joseph Schwartz (Class of 1971) represented her – her husband was in St. Maarten helping with hurricane relief efforts. Elizabeth Schwartz spoke of her mother and father as people who understood the struggles of others and were the kind of people who always did something to help. She hoped her mother’s plaque on the wall would be inspiration to the students who walked past to also become the kind of people who do something to help others. Okst, Class of 1985, who enjoyed a successful high
school and college career as a scholar-athlete, is a coach for the Port Jefferson boys varsity cross-country and winter and spring track teams. He was introduced by senior Reid Biondo and recognized for his extensive kindness, compassion, community service and altruism. West-Serignese, Class of 1999, now a resident of Nashville, Tennessee, was recognized for public service, school/community service. She was nominated by her business partner Emily Ciancarelli for her local contributions as well as her exceptional life accomplishments. In addition to being an accomplished chef and working in many cities around the country, she started the nonprofit organ East End Play Dates, which now has multiple chapters, to support mothers and their children.

Homecoming Win for the Royals Capping off a week of school-spirited events and a parade complete with floats from each grade level, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Royals football team took the homecoming win against Bayport-Blue Point, 34-16,
on October 6th. Many spectators were in town to celebrate their 40 year high school reunion and joined in the festivities by riding in the parade and cheering on the Royals. Others lined the streets of Port Jefferson Village as

A former junior fire fighter for the Hagerman Fire Department Explorer Program, and a probationary fire fighter, Sean has participated in Brookhaven Town’s Clean-up Day. During the winter, he assists with snow removal around fire hydrants and the homes of elderly fire department members. During the
holidays, Sean makes “elf visits” to Home Depot in Bellport with a fire truck and Santa Claus, for the enjoyment of the community’s children. As an employee of Woodside Nursery and Gardens since 2013, Sean has assisted with Make-AWish during the holiday season. He has also been a volunteer with Angels on Long Island since 2014, where he assists with moving and picking up furniture, loading and unloading trucks, helping in the store and participating in their special events, such as the back-to-school drive and fall festival.
Bellport High School Principal Timothy Hogan recognized Sean during the September 26th South Country Central School Board of Education meeting. “Sean is a young man of character, who possesses a commitment to community often not seen in people his age,” Mr. Hogan said. “He is a remarkable young man with a bright future.” Sean will be presented the AABLE award at the Bellport Country Club on October 27th.
