During the month of October, the Long Island Game Farm will only be open on weekends. The Game Farm will operate on the following dates: October 18th-19th and 25th-26th. In addition to seeing the animals, Game Farm visitors can also take part in a special event during the month of October: a “Meet The Pirate and Princess Party” and costume contest, which will take place on October 25th (rain date is October 26th). Visitors can explore nature trails that lead to places such as “Bambiland,” “The Nursery” and “Old McDonald’s Farmyard.” They can also pet, cuddle and — unlike most zoos — feed the baby animals such as pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits and ponies. On Sunday, October 5th more than 600 friends, participants and supporters came together for the fifth annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel at Belmont Lake State Park to support adult and children with disabilities. The noncompetitive event raised over $90,000. The funds raised will support the programs and services of UCP of Suffolk which provides to almost 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year. “We hold a walk and wheel instead of a race because we want to include all of our program participants, friends, family and employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities,” Stephen H. Friedman, UCP of Suffolk President and CEO said. “We are so pleased with how much this event has grown. We started with about 100 people and now

over 600 people support our event.” “I liked the walk because I was with all of my friends and it raised money for a good cause which is UCP of Suffolk,” Participant Michelle said. Bethpage Federal Credit Union returned as a Presenting Sponsor. Other generous sponsors included Capital One Bank, Estee Lauder Companies, M &T Bank, New York Therapy Placement Services, Inc., The Winter Family, New York Therapy Placement Services, Inc., CWI Medical Inc. and Emblem Health. This is the 12th year the school has produced a show focused on a topic prevalent in the lives of today’s adolescents. A preview of the play will be held for students during the day and community members are invited to attend the free evening performance on October 29th. Over 50 Fair A Success This year’s Over 50 Fair had a successful run on September 28th at the Melville Marriott. Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said she has received many positive comments from both attendees and exhibitors. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. Gemma Kodumal, who attends the Over 50 Fair annually, said, “I was able to attend one class, Genomic Testing, and we all raved about it. We need to come earlier next time to be able to avail ourselves of other seminars.” This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. Some of the 30 classes available

this year covered saving for retirement, iPad apps, stress reduction, meditation, legal hemp, comedy shows, and yoga. The free opportunities included a health assessment, body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, hearing screenings, and a five-minute hand or foot massage. Attendees also enjoyed no-charge valet parking. Cynthia Shaw of Helpful Care said, “This was our first year of exhibiting at Barbara’s Over 50 Fair. Each exhibitor felt a personal connection with Barbara and each of us knew that she truly wanted us to be successful. We will certainly participate in ‘Barbara sponsored’ events in the future.” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, asked people to bring non-perishable food and cash donations to exchange for raffle tickets for valuable prizes. The

INN was pleased to raise almost $300 and 88 pounds of food. Barbara’s other large event for children and their families, the All Kids Fair, will return on April 26th to the Melville Marriott. Student Spotlight GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.” In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers. However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the

journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Fishy Friends By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

Getting Creative With Cardboard Edna Louise Spear Elementary fourth-graders in Ms. Kari Costanzo’s class used their imaginations and tactile skills to create Halloween-themed projects using recycled cardboard and other items during a lesson on October 8th. Working in teams, the Port Jefferson School District students were tasked with designing and building a life-size structure that represents a

certain “smart,” according to Howard Gardiner’s 8 types of smart, which include word, logic, picture, body, music, nature, people and self. Second-graders were then invited to play with the creations during an imaginative play session on October 10th. Prior to the build, which was inspired by the Imagination Foundation’s Global Cardboard Challenge, students were

At the September 30th town board meeting, Councilman Dan Panico presented awards to the winners of the Home Run Derby that raised almost $2000 for Team Lily. Safe Halloween

Ward Melville High School will host its annual “Trick-or-Treat Street” on Friday, October 31st, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event, which has been coordinated by the school’s Key Club for the past 23 years, offers a safe environment for community members to bring their children on Halloween. Classrooms will be decorated for the holiday and various school clubs will coordinate activities throughout the building and provide treats to attendees. In lieu of an entrance fee, attendees are asked to donate a non-perishable food item. All donations will be given to a local food pantry.

Science Inspires Eastern Suffolk BOCES students connected with science and the world around them when they participated in a Simulated Disease Transmission Lab activity. Canine Career Program and Health Related Occupations Program students took part in this collaborative exercise to learn how disease is transmitted. Canine Career Teacher Lisa Konnerth said, “The students were paired off into groups of two. Each

group was given a vial with “body fluids”, which was really distilled water. Students were instructed to share their “body fluids” with three other people and keep track of who they shared with.” An indicator solution, 2,6-Dichloroindophenol was added to all the vials to determine which vials were infected with the virus. The indicator solution is a safe sodium salt hydrate substance. If the body fluid was negative for the

virus, the fluid turned blue in color; if positive, the vial remained clear when the indicator solution was added. The students tracked the disease and charted the results at the conclusion of the experiment. Health Related Occupations Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “The lab allowed the students to see how one person can spread disease to so many people and not show signs of the disease.”

At their meeting on October 2nd, the Setauket Fire District’s Board of Commissioners recognized four local boys who, because of their quick actions, saved a house from total destruction in late summer. Joseph Babis, a thirdgrade student at Nassakeag Elementary School, Brody Babis, a kindergartner at Nassakeag Elementary School, William Boonin, a third-grader at Setauket Elementary School and JD Boonin, a second-

grade student at Setauket Elementary School, were each honored with a special certificate and lauds of commendations from all in attendance. On August 25th, the boys were playing in the backyard at the Boonin residence when they saw smoke from above the fence. They climbed up to the top of the swing set to get a better view, where they saw a fire at a neighboring house. The boys quickly ran inside and told Mrs. Beth Boonin,

who then called 911. “Because of the boys’ quick actions, the house was saved from total destruction,” said David Sterne, the Setauket Fire District Manager. “These young gentlemen are to be commended for their quick response.” According to William, “I was a little nervous but made sure to tell my mom right away.” “We knew we had to tell someone right away because we didn’t want the fire to spread,” added Joseph.

Hercules On The Harbor On Sunday, October 26th, at 9:30 a.m. thousands of Long Islanders will take “steps” toward eradicating breast cancer during the 21st annual Walk for Beauty in a Beautiful Place. This year will also mark the inaugural Hercules on the Harbor 10K run through the very hilly North Shore communities of Stony Brook and the Village of Head of the Harbor that organizers contend is possibly the toughest on Long Island. The USA Track & Field sanctioned event will transverse a very challenging on and offroad course starting and finishing in front of Stony Brook’s famous Hercules

Participants will be provided spectacular views of the beautiful village green, the scenic marina and harbor, the charming residential community, the stunning Harmony Vineyards, and the picturesque Stony Brook Mill Pond, while passing such local historical landmarks as West Meadow Beach’s Gamecock Cottage, the colonialera Hawkins Homestead and Stony Brook Grist Mill. More than a mile of the course will include a trek off-road through the remarkable Avalon Park & Preserve along one of its wooded trails and over grassy paths that loop

around the east and west flower fields. The course will offer both novice and seasoned runners memorable moments that will keep them returning year after year. The atmosphere will be festive with balloons, bands and camaraderie in connection with the Walk for Beauty event that, since its inception, has raised over $1,250,000 for cancer research at Stony Brook Medicine. Proceeds are also used to support the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Unique Boutique for prostheses and wigs, benefitting those battling cancer. More than ten local musical acts will help keep the energy high by

performing at various spots along the course. Rock Bands, string quartets, acoustic guitar players, jazz trios and other musical entertainment will motivate the runners and create a unique experience for participants and spectators alike. This will be fun! Advanced registration is now open for both the walk and 10K run at $25 and $35, respectively. The first 1,000 walkers to signup will receive a commemorative 2014 Walk for Beauty t-shirt and the first 250 10K runners are guaranteed a Hercules on the Harbor long-sleeve t-shirt sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Marathon Announcement County Executive Steve Bellone joined state and local officials, chambers of commerce, members of the running community, and local veterans to announce that Suffolk County will host its inaugural marathon September 13th, 2015. The marathon and half marathon are part of County’s new ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign – a region-wide initiative designed to encourage and assist residents live healthy and active lives. “The Suffolk County marathon is a mechanism to highlight the incredible communities, natural resources and businesses we have here in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Suffolk County is a world renowned destination. From the Hamptons to our wine country to our amazing downtowns and world class beaches, we are a destination for tourism, businesses, recreation, and living. Our marathon will give us an opportunity to showcase all of that.” The County Executive will participate in Suffolk County’s inaugural marathon and in addition will be running the New York City marathon this year in support of the Hope for the Warriors Foundation. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism towards downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State for race coordination and planning. “We are proud to work alongside Suffolk County to make certain the inaugural marathon is a success,” said Wayne Horsely, Long Island Director of New York State Parks & Recreation. “This really is a great opportunity to highlight the beautiful Heckscher State Park and we look
