Homecoming events kicked off with spirit week during the week of September 28th. Students wore school colors and participated in a pep rally where Earl L. Try-Days & Art After Dark This fall, the Art League of Island has combined two popular events into one, the recently introduced Friday TRY-DAYS with a long-running favorite evening event called Art After Dark. For several years now, Art After Dark has provided a fun evening of visual arts and socializing in the Art League’s spacious Elizabeth S. Livingston art center. Visitors can get a good look at the exhibit in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, or go to the art studios to see “pop-up” exhibits by local artists, view art demonstrations by Art League Instructors, and enjoy live music. Anyone can come in and enjoy the evening since Art After Dark is free and open to the general public. Friday TRY-DAYS were introduced in the spring

to give people a chance to “test the waters” and try out a workshop in the course of a threehour evening. Prices are nominal at $35 per person, $30 if one RSVP’s in advance. Workshop participants get to take home a finished work of art at the end of the evening and all materials are included. This fall, visitors to the center get the best of both worlds, with free art demonstrations beginning at 6:30 p.m. and TRY-DAY workshops beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitors can spend a few hours taking in the gallery exhibit, pop-up exhibits, viewing the free art demonstrations, and enjoying live music or maybe even openmic poetry readings. Or, visitors can mingle and view a demo before heading to a workshop. Those who enjoy the free demo can come back the following month and take the three-hour workshop at the next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark. The next TRY-DAY/Art After Dark on November 13th will feature live art demonstrations by Anu Annam (Watercolor), David Peikon (Oil Painting), and Suzanne Young (Charcoal/ Pastel Painting). They will be presenting their workshops at the December 11th event in addition to Dana Neger Lagos’ Jewelry workshop. Workshops on tap for November 13th are “Icicle Pendant” (Jewelry) with Dana Neger Lagos, “Painting Pollock” with Kevin Larkin, “Discovering Pastels” with Joel Spector, and “Painting with Photoshop” (Computer Graphics) with David Miller. Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Culinary Arts students in Lauren Battista’s Food Service Program at Bixhorn Technical Center made heart and ribbonshaped lollipops to sell and raise donations for autism awareness. The special career education students learned the steps to melt chocolate and add color so the end result would look like the work of a pro. It was important that the lollipops incorporate the autism colors of red, yellow, dark, and light blue. It was a multi-step process

but the students took their time and created the exact colors they needed. The ribbon mold was specifically chosen so that the students could use it to make lollipops to raise money for other fundraisers that occur throughout the school year. “The students learn to multi-task, use the skills they are learning in the classroom, and work as a team in food prep,” said Chef Battista. It’s not just about food tasting good, the students also work on presentation. “We always

check and double check that they incorporate sanitation and safety measures in the kitchen,” said Chef Battista. LIRR CLEANUP - A group of student volunteers from Stony Brook University gathered last Saturday with community members from the Greening of 25A Committee to clean up the area around the Stony Brook LIRR Station. The students helped picked up trash and did gardening work, planting trees and shrubs to beautify the surroundings. Stony Brook students from Alternative Spring Break Outreach, Circle K International, Commuter Assistant Program and Commuter Student Association participated in the cleanup project.

The smell of fall is in the air and Halloween is right around the corner, leaving thrill-seekers tingling in anticipation for the 27th annual Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Spooky Walk, hosted by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws. Visitors will be chilled to the bones with this horrifying event, as they encounter surprises around every corner. This year’s Spooky Walk is sponsored by Capitol One Bank and will take place on October 16th-17th and 23rd-24th at Camp PaQua-Tuck from 7 to 9 p.m. The entire Spooky Walk trail takes 45 minutes to complete, making it the longest-lasting haunted walk on Long Island. Over 50 Fair a Success The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This

year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly

crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer

Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings.
