Setauket Wins Reading Challenge Three Village Central School District elementary school students once again took part in a friendly reading competition organized by the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library during the summer
vacation. Students logged the number of books they completed in hopes of earning their school the coveted “Emma Cup,” an award given to the school with the highest percentage of students who
completed the Summer Reading Challenge. A total of 16,851 books were read by students throughout the summer and this year’s “Emma Cup” winner was Setauket Elementary School.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

On Sunday October 24th “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in
more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. Stony Brook Medicine Doctor Honored for Water Rescue
Seth Korbin, MD, joint reconstruction specialist at Stony Brook Orthopaedic Associates and clinical associate professor at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, was presented a Proclamation by Suffolk County Legislator, Bridget Fleming this week in
acknowledgement of his rescue of a man, woman and her 7-year-old son from the waters in Hampton Bays on Wednesday, August 25. After deciding to go surfing in the ocean off Dune Road, Dr. Korbin noticed three people clinging to a boogie board and realized that they were
caught in a rip current. He first brought the 7-year-old boy to shore, and then went back out for the man and woman. Everyone was safe and no medical attention was needed, thanks to the quick and selfless actions of Dr. Korbin.

Ward Melville High School junior, singersongwriter and former Broadway actress Ava Della Pietra has been named a winner in the New York State School Music Association’s 2021 Calls for Creators Competition. Ava won with her two original songs, “Moon” and “Optimist” in the Songwriters Showcase category. An introspective single
about saying goodbye to her brother, a source of comfort and inspiration, “Moon” is a poignant ballad about impermanence and coming of age. “Optimist” is an uplifting and inspiring song about overcoming negativity and keeping a positive mindset. For the first time, NYSSMA held three calls for student musicians in three categories – composers, electronic
music and songwriters. Students received a written evaluation of their music and each submitted work was also considered for inclusion in one of three concerts at the AllState Winter Conference in Rochester. Student creators were also invited to participate in coaching workshops and a postconcert discussion.

The new faculty members, who will teach a variety of subjects and grade levels as well as offer support services, spent the day learning about the school district. Central administrators facilitated the orientation program, which gave the new instructional staff members an extensive overview of Rocky Point’s curriculum, special education program, educational technology resources and policies. The Reboli Center of Art and History is pleased to showcase the fine work of Sound Beach based potter, Russell Pulick. “He has enthralled pottery enthusiasts for more than 40 years with his beautiful designs and craftsmanship,” said Lois Reboli, a founder of the Reboli Center. Russell Pulick is well-known in the craft show arena where he has been selling his pottery since 1976. His work is also sold through galleries around the country and on four continents. He was an instructor at the Art League of Long Island for 18 years, their studio manager for four years, and taught at the St. James Harbor Country Day School’s summer art program for 14 years. In 2018, he teamed up with several other potters to create The Brick Clay Studio & Gallery in St. James that offers classes, open studio hours and a gallery. He teaches beginner and advanced students there. According to the artist, “Most of what I know about pottery, I taught myself through research and experimentation. The pots I make are all handmade. They are either ‘thrown’ on a wheel or hand built using the slab construction method. I use speckled

Cycling For A Cause Arrowhead Elementary School student Joseph Peritore once again joined his father’s team this September on a ride to fight childhood cancers by taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge. With the amazing support from the Three
Village community last year, Joseph was able to raise $3,406 for Children’s Cancer Research Fund. This motivated him to ride a total of 53 miles and also earned him the rank of #1 in his age group in the state and top 10 in the nation. This year,
