The Perks of Being a Student As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the ﬂash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

Carriage and Art Museums and offer opportunities for mental stimulation and social engagement. Participants are able to connect with the artwork on display, gain a sense of importance, and share and relay memories,

Building Business On September 26th, the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) hosted its 13th annual “Building Business in Brookhaven Expo” at Town Hall. The event, which attracted over 450 local business people and over 100 vendors, focused on business networking and included a trade show with booths highlighting local, regional and national companies that service

businesses in Brookhaven Town. The expo was presented by the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven Division of Economic Development, Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency and the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition (BCCC). During the evening, vendors and attendees

were interviewed for a special program which will air in the next few weeks on Brookhaven Cablevision Channel 18. Learning a New Sport Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School students in the Rocky Point School District learned about the sport of fencing during a recent workshop with the owners and representatives from

Mission Fencing, a Rocky Point-based fencing facility. During their physical education classes, the students learned about the evolution of the sport and the different types of swords

used during duels as well as their early connections to self-defense. In addition, using pool noodles, they practiced a few basic steps and competition moves.

As part of the observance, Student Organization members decorated school hallways, lockers and classrooms with messages of peace. They

On Sunday, September 24th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright attended a testimonial dinner honoring Anthony ‘Tony’ Rotoli, Jr., Immediate Past President of the Vigiano Brothers Lodge #3436 of Sons of Italy in America. Tony served as president of the lodge from 2015-2017.

The mission of the Vigiano Brothers Lodge #3436 is to honor their namesakes, John Vigiano II and Joseph Vigiano, two remarkable young men who grew up on Long Island. John served as a member of the New York Fire Department and Joseph served as a member of the New York City Police

also produced a short film featuring middle and high school students speaking about what peace means to them. The video was viewed throughout the day in the school’s hallways. To add to the theme of global unity and serenity, songs with messages of peace were played over the high schools’ public address system. At the elementary

school, art students designed pinwheels for display in the courtyard, Picasso-inspired doves, Tibetan mandala designs, and a peace “quilt.” Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day is observed around the world to provide a time for all humanity to commit to contributing to building a culture of peace.

Recipe for Success

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, along with Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Michael Gould, President and Founder of Hounds Town Charities, announced a unique initiative help make dogs from the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter more adoptable. The program, called Handcuffs to Healing, started in mid-September and will run for 6 consecutive weeks. The

program pairs six shelter dogs with six inmates at the Yaphank Jail for six weeks of intensive canine obedience training. At the end of the training, the dogs will be ready for adoption. The goal of Handcuffs to Healing is also twofold; the six inmates participating in the program are learning valuable skills which may someday lead to employment in the field. All are sentenced

to county time and considered low risk offenders. Undersheriff Steven Kuehhas called the initiative a positive experience and stated, “Our goal is to reduce inmate recidivism and programs like these help tremendously.” Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine made the following statement about the program: “Handcuffs to Healing is a win-win for the inmates, the dogs

Handcuffs to Healing and the people who adopt them. It’s a very rewarding experience for all involved and I thank Sheriff DeMarco for partnering with the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter and Hounds Town Charities on this great program.” He also encouraged the public to call the Town Animal Shelter at 631.451.6950 for more information. Road to Remembrance Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently joined Suffolk County Legislator William “Doc” Spencer to unveil a ceremonial “Road to Remembrance Trail” at the 3rd annual CHS Suffolk County Marathon. The third-of-a-mile trail, which is a portion of the actual Marathon and HalfMarathon route, will be dedicated to the memory of 30 Suffolk County fallen military service members killed in the line of duty

since September 11th, 2001. The Trail crosses over the Amity University campus located in Oakdale. County Executive Bellone and Legislator Doc Spencer were joined by Gold Star parents family members who lost loved ones that paid the ultimate sacrifice. The CHS Suffolk County Marathon was created to help raise critical funds needed to support organizations that cater to the needs of veterans in the

County. To date, more than $300,000 have been raised and all proceeds distributed to a wide range of veteran service organizations who are committed to improving the quality of life for veterans. Suffolk County has the largest veteran population in New York State. The 3rd annual CHS Suffolk County Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 29th, 2017.

Handcuffs to Healing Continued From 17 founder of Hounds Town USA, and the charitable organization, Hounds Town Charities, is a former commanding officer of the Nassau County Police Canine Unit and an NYPD canine handler. He, along with Barbara Dennihy, the New York Director of the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS), met with Sheriff DeMarco in the spring to pitch the idea of a dog training program for county inmates - and the Sheriff agreed to run it as a pilot initiative. The dogs from the Town of Brookhaven

Animal Shelter were selected by Gould with the help of shelter director Ashley Boyd, who was very instrumental in facilitating the process. Dogs had to meet three criteria: they had to be in need of a good home; social with other dogs; and friendly with people. After the six dogs were selected, they were transported to Hounds Town Charities where they stayed for several days before being introduced to the inmates. Throughout the course of the program, the dogs will continue to reside at Hounds Town Charities in Ronkonkoma so they

enjoy socialization in a consistent environment. Gould made the following statement, “I am very grateful to the Suffolk County Sheriff’ Office for the opportunity to take this progressive approach to rehabilitating both dogs and humans. The Sheriff’s Office values what we are doing and that is essential to the program’s success. The inmates have worked incredibly hard with these dogs and it’s heartwarming to see the transformation that both the inmates and the dogs have made over four short weeks.”

Crafts for a Purpose

On September 30th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio were on-hand at the Ridge Fire Department Headquarters to celebrate Blessings in a Backpack Day. The event was held to educate the community about the organization and celebrate its success of providing weekend meals and feeding over 300 Longwood children each week.

The non-profit Blessings in a Backpack feeds school children in the United States who currently are fed during the week on the federally funded Free and Reduced Meal Program and are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. Its mission is to mobilize communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might

otherwise go hungry. As of March 2016, the program is feeding more than 88,000 children in 46 states and Washington, D.C. at 950 schools in the United States. For more information, visit www. Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following events: Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, October 14th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the present-day lighthouse keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator to the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Includes a tour of the Lens Building and the Boat House. Tour takes approximately 2 1/2 hours.
