Author, photographer and historian, Kerriann Flanagan Brosky, along with Paranormal Investigator, Joe Giaquinto, will share the results of what they uncovered at the William Sidney Mount House in Stony Brook at a book signing event on October 27. Kerriann Flanagan Brosky is an eight-time award winning author of seven books, and has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, Newsday and Distinction Magazine. She has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning Show,

Ticket with Laura Savini, News 12 Long Island, and The Thinking Writer in East Hampton, for her previously published nonfiction books. Hear about EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena), hauntings and other phenomena discovered at this historic property, built in 1725, where American genre painter William Sidney Mount lived and worked in his studio in the 3rd floor attic. The house became a National Historic Landmark in 1965. Ironically, many of Mount’s early paintings dealt with

death, ghosts and the supernatural. The event will take place from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center, 97P Main Street, in the rear of the Stony Brook Village Center. Three Village Student Artwork Three Village Central School District students showed their creativity talents and artistic capabilities during this year’s International Interdependence Hexagon Project, a visual arts opportunity for students worldwide. The event encourages students to create art within the infinitely inter-linking shape of a hexagon; a metaphor for interconnectedness. Within the shape, students made connections to the world around them through shapes, words and other artistic representation. The 2018

theme was “Transforming Conflicts,” and was a call to promote global citizenship, whereby enabling learners. Suffolk's ER Treatment for Overdose Victims Citing a lack of standardized protocols throughout the County’s hospital emergency rooms for patients who’ve overdosed on opioids, the Suffolk Legislature approved the creation of a 13 member panel to draft recommendations for treating the addiction component of an overdose in patients. The bill, sponsored by the Legislature’s Majority Leader Kara Hahn and Legislator William Spencer, will create a working group comprised of health

department officials, hospital representatives and addiction experts charged with developing a model of best practices that emergency departments can voluntarily implement. The group will have seven months to put together its guidelines that the Suffolk County Department of Health Services will then provide to hospitals. Following the initial protocol’s distribution, members will continue to convene annually to consider revisions or additions to

the guidance. While emergency rooms are primarily designed to treat the immediate toxicological aspects of an overdose, hospitals often follow post-opioid overdose protocols that may include offering overdose prevention education, naloxone and related training for patients, family members, and friends; linking patients to treatment and services in the community and starting Medication-

For those who are familiar with my work interviewing public figures, I am often asked, “Don’t you get nervous to speak to these people?” Or, “Is it ever intimidating?” No, I don’t. And no, it’s not. People are shocked to hear that no matter who I sit down with, what awards they have won or how many people know their name, I do not experience the feeling of intimidation. It’s occurred to me over time that the reason my answer confuses people is because they don’t understand my perspective on the human experience. I think it’s about time I share my philosophy, because I want you to be empowered by it in your own life. Here is my secret... The reason I feel equal to any public figure I interview or meet is because we are all here in this earth school to learn. If you didn’t have a lot to learn, you likely wouldn’t be here. You’d be on some higher plain of existence somewhere, in some other dimension, and most

likely not on earth. Don’t take it personally. I’m here too! This goes for any of us. No matter our race or ethnicity, gender or sexuality, socio-economic status, education or level of notoriety, we are all here in this earth school because our soul still has much to learn. This knowing allows me to see everyone I meet as a fellow student on a collective journey. We’ve all signed up for different experiences based on what our soul came here to learn this go around. Since we have all learned different lessons based on our unique life experiences, every one of us has, both, things to learn and things to teach. As the late Maya Angelou said, “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” That is how I view my work as a journalist who interviews notable figures. I feel they have much to teach, as do I… as do you. But just like any of us, they also have much to learn, or they wouldn’t be here. I can’t tell you how many times I have been engaged in conversation with someone who

is seen by the world as extremely successful and accomplished, and I will share a thought or observation that stops them in their tracks. They will say to me, “Wow! I never thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing that.” Some of the world’s most successful people understand that listening and learning is every bit as important as sharing and teaching. They understand the exchange of energy that flows between two human beings when both open up and allow it to happen. No matter how you see your station in life as this moment, be open to learning from those who are where you want to be, but do not ever think for a second that you do not have valuable insights to share, and something of great importance to teach. Be open. Be willing to learn as well as to teach. Be willing to receive as well as to give. And be selective with whom you share your gifts. Most importantly, be yourself, because what you bring to the table is truly unique and cannot be duplicated by another.

Andie MacDowell on Womanhood and Growing Older in Hollywood By Allison Kugel

Actress Andie MacDowell’s appeal is in her ethereal glow. From her crown of dark cascading curls to her porcelain complexion and delicate features, MacDowell’s sweet yet sultry sensuality captivated moviegoing audiences with hits like Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Green Card, Groundhog’s Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral. She has always played the woman of great desire who orbits just outside of the male lead’s reach... that is, until he figures out how to win her over. As Andie tells it, her “it girl” status throughout the late eighties and the whole of the nineties was a thrill ride, but left her feeling torn between an A-List career and being a hands-on mom to her three children. It was then that she resolved to stop making movies back-to-back, but to choose her projects more carefully, to be sure the role was worth time away from her family.

Allison Kugel: Do you feel a sense of relief that the kinds of roles you’re getting to play now are more character-driven, as opposed to the young female lead that you played in the nineties?

Allison Kugel: Your latest movie, Love After Love, is about grieving and finding your way back after the loss of a loved one. What are the things that you turn to when the ground starts to shake beneath your feet? Andie MacDowell: Oh, I’m always looking for my center. I hike a lot, and I like to be in nature around trees. I love to ride horses… Allison Kugel: Me too! Andie MacDowell: Do you? They say that it has a physical effect on you. Allison Kugel: I believe that. I always say that riding horses is my yoga. People are always bugging me to do yoga and it’s not really my thing. Riding gives me that meditative feeling. Andie MacDowell: I should be riding right now. It’s soothing and calming, it lowers your cortisol levels. Being around animals, in general, is really comforting. Allison Kugel: What do you teach your kids about emotional and spiritual resiliency? Andie MacDowell: They are spiritual,

which I am thankful for. I put no pressure on them to believe anything that I believe, but I think it’s healthy to have spirituality in your life. My children are very peace-seeking people, and love-seeking people. To me, God is love, so they are headed in the right direction. Allison Kugel: In your earlier career, you were doing movie after movie – Sex, Lies, and Videotape; Green Card; Groundhog’s Day; Four Weddings and a Funeral – and all eyes were on you. What did that moment in time feel like for you? Andie MacDowell: I could have done a lot more, but one year I did three movies in a year and I realized that I could not be a good mother and do that many movies. I was so popular, and I was so young. I could usually decide when I wanted to work and go find a job; it was that easy. And I would always try to do one independent [film] and one studio film. That would be my goal each year. Life was great. I have to say it was wonderful to be in that position. Allison Kugel: And then you entered your forties. Andie MacDowell: Yes, it’s true. People would keep saying to me when I would get interviewed, “How does it feel to turn forty and know that you’re not going to work anymore?” And it really was… kind of like a light switch. Allison Kugel: In the early years of your career, did you ever have a #MeToo moment? Andie MacDowell: I didn’t ever have sexual problems in the context of my career. I had #MeToo issues, but not in the business. What I find equally as important as the #MeToo movement, is that I strongly believe this is the first time we have had any voice. Women have always been accused of being too emotional. If you’ve studied therapy, early on according to Carl Jung, a woman who wanted to be independent was crazy. That’s how far we have had to come. Just to be independent, not too long ago, we were called insane. There are so many social issues right now that are really important. My hope is that every aspect of how we have been diminished is going to be opened up. People will see and question why they would have to ask a woman the question that they asked me when I turned forty, and yet not ask it of a man. It’s important that we take a hard look at that.

Allison Kugel: How do you define “happy?” Andie MacDowell: I think happiness is peace of mind. It’s definitely not superficial. Happiness is not a big house. I’ve had a big house and I’ve had a small house, and I think I was happier in the smaller house. Happiness is never going to be things. Allison Kugel: What do you believe in, and who or what do you pray to? Andie MacDowell: Ha! I pray to a very liberal Jesus. I grew up going to church and it was a warm environment where my mother played the organ and my favorite song was Jesus Loves the Little Children. It’s such a corny little song, but I love it. “All the children of the world; black and yellow, red and white; they’re all precious in His sight; Jesus loves the little children of the world.” I grew up going to Sunday school and sang that song, and it was sweet. It’s nothing to do with politics or any concept that everybody has unfortunately thrown onto my concept of who He is. Allison Kugel: How are you going to ring in your sixtieth birthday? Andie MacDowell: I’m going to be working, which is what I like to do! That’s a good thing. I want to do something special. Maybe I’ll go to India. I’ve been wanting to go to India for a long time. Allison Kugel: What do you think this new decade will bring into your life? Andie MacDowell: I know what I hope it brings. I would like to do more spiritual work. Go listen to Ram Dass talk, and Marianne Williamson; go to a yoga retreat and cultivate

every aspect of myself so that I can continue to work on peace of mind. As you get older, I feel like if you’re going down the right road there is this clarity that you can see in your eyes. It’s a gentleness that is the most beautiful aspect a human can have. That is my goal, to continue to work on that gentle side of myself.

Over the last eighteen years, MacDowell has continued to work steadily, choosing roles that move her, make her think, and those that allow her to unpack her more provocative side. In 2015’s Magic Mike XXL, MacDowell played Nancy, the flirtatious older woman who unapologetically has her way with Joe Manganiello’s character. It’s safe to say that at this stage in MacDowell’s career she is doing anything but playing it safe on screen.

Andie MacDowell: I’m thankful for all the jobs I’ve had, and I’ve gotten to do some great parts. I don’t have any regrets, and I think those roles suited me at that age and time. I think as you get older, you are a character (laughs). You have a lot more depth by the time you’re my age, because you’ve had to struggle. My life has not been a piece of cake. I understand what it is to have a complex life.

Rocky Point AP Honors As a result of their exceptional academic achievement and promise, twenty-seven Rocky Point High School seniors have been named Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. This honor is bestowed upon students based on their performance on Advanced Placement exams. Twenty scholars were given the title of AP Scholar after receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. These include:

Maxwell Alkon, Casey Badal, Camaryn Banfi, Allison Bernhard, Sydney Burke, Kimberly Casey, Julius Condemi, Sabrina Duenas, Alyssa Figarsky, Michael Gunning, Jack Hamilton, Hunter Hess, Paul Leheste, Amanda Levix, Eric Maier, Donald Marotta, Caitlin Migliore, Briana O’Connor, Julia Salino and Delaney Vu. Five were named AP Scholars with Honor after receiving scores of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken

and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These include: Jennifer Bradley, Jale Caneli, Hayley Nofi, Joshua Vogel and Alexander Weik. Additionally, two students – Ethan Brown and Bryant Liu – were given the high honor of AP Scholar with Distinction. These students earned this title after receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Cedar Beach Little Free Library On September 27th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner was at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai to unveil the newly installed Little Free Library, a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange where anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. Joining Councilwoman

The entire Port Jefferson School District celebrated the International Day of Peace through activities sponsored by the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Student Organization. As part of the observance, Student Organization members decorated school hallways, lockers and classrooms with messages of peace and shared music with positive, peaceful themes that was broadcast over the loudspeaker between classes. Visual arts students

districtwide worked collaboratively to create artwork centered around the idea of togetherness and world peace. They worked in a variety of mediums including acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, pastels and ink to depict Tibetan mandala designs, pin wheels for peace, sunflowers from observation and symbols representative of peace. At Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, firstgraders worked under the direction of art teacher Meghan McCarthy and

engaged in discussions about what peace means and discovered which colors convey a peaceful feeling as they created pinwheels for peace. Second- and third-graders also had discussions about peaceful moments and used their creativity in their works, and fourthgraders engaged in the art of mandala making. They examined Tibetan monks participating in a mandala making ceremony. This experience helped to improve and inspire their focus and peace within.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer, DuWayne Gregory, is seeking a local law to amend the County’s current land acquisition program to require sellers to disclose their campaign donations to County officials and candidates, and to clearly indicate any government employment they may hold. The property owner will still be responsible for filing a certified public disclosure statement with the Director of Real Property, but it will be the responsibility of Real Property to file that disclosure with the Clerk of the Legislature. Previously, the property owner was responsible for filing a certified statement with both offices. In addition, the certified public disclosure

statement will now include information from the property owner as to whether the individual or individuals are officers or employees of Suffolk County or if they or any other party has an ownership interest in the property. Adrienne Esposito, Executive Director for the Citizens Campaign for the Environment, spoke on behalf of the measure at a Suffolk County Legislature public hearing this week indicating support. She pointed out that while Suffolk already has a strong law in place to ensure the protection of land within the County, any additional measures can add another layer of accountability. Presiding Officer Gregory said, “This law will enhance the integrity of the County’s land acquisition

program by requiring disclosure of campaign contributions and any government employment they may hold. It is essential that there be no perceived conflict when we are talking about taxpayer dollars that are being used to purchase private property.” Presiding Officer Gregory indicated that it is vital that all land acquisitions, whether through the farmland preservation program or the County’s open space program be transparent and do their utmost to protect ground and surface waters, enhance tourism and maintain the agriculture industry. The measure will move to the full Legislature at the November meeting.

Suffolk County Health Commissioner, Dr. James Tomarken, announced that four new mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus. The samples were collected on September 20, 2018 from North Babylon, Aquebogue, Southold and Shelter Island. To date this season, the county has reported one horse, 139 mosquito samples, and 12 birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The county has also reported four human cases of West Nile virus to date this year. West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. “Though the temperatures are getting cooler, mosquitoes may still be active for several more weeks,” said Dr. Tomarken. “While there is no cause for alarm, we advise residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to reduce exposure

to West Nile virus, which can be debilitating to humans.” According to Dr. Tomarken, most people infected with West Nile virus will experience mild or no symptoms; but some can develop severe symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. The symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. To avoid mosquito bites, residents are advised to: Minimize outdoor activities between dusk and dawn. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and longsleeved shirts when mosquitoes are active. Use mosquito repellent, following label directions

carefully. Make sure all windows and doors have screens, and that all screens are in good repair. Keep mosquitoes from laying eggs inside and outside of your home. Once a week empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out containers that hold water; such as vases, pet water bowls, flowerpot saucers, discarded tires, buckets, pool covers, birdbaths, trash cans and rain barrels. On Saturday, September 22nd, Suffolk County Legislator, Sarah Anker, attended the Davis Town Meeting House Society’s 6th Annual Yard Sale and Craft Fair. The Yard Sale and Craft Fair hosted vendors selling household goods, toys, clothing, and bikes; as well as more specialized goods such as woodworking items, art, and jewelry. In addition to the

vendors, there was a historical reenactment of several scenes from the American War for Independence, performed by the New York 3rd Regiment Long Island Companies. “Every year, this event provides a great space for community members to pass along their gently used items, as well as share their unique talents with others,” said Legislator

Bayport-Blue Point Scholars The Bayport-Blue Point School District is proud to announce that 86 Bayport-Blue Point High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2018.
